2000 yukon 5.3l 4x4 automatic when cars started wont move forward or backwards

Drove the car a few days ago it was fine until when
i was driving the truck slipped out of gear i drove it
home which wasnt far and now it wont go
forwards or backward. Had a buddy over to help he
got the car to drive but he said it slipped out of
gear

Is there a problem with the linkage? Or is the trany just going bad.
