2002 4.0 Ranger Hard to start

Asked by biguz55 Dec 30, 2013 at 10:53 AM about the 2002 Ford Ranger 2 Dr XLT Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter's 02 Ranger XLT 4.0 will start every time when you 1st crank it in the am, but
after you stop and it sits for a few minutes it will turn over but not start. It will eventually
start after cycling it a couple times. It runs fine after it starts. Fuel pressure at the shrader
valve is 60 psi but drops almost immediately after the key is cut off. Any ideas??

sounds like a starter possibly going bad... I always took that as a warning from the starter that it didn't have many starts left...

check schrader valve stem itself.Had the same problem after changing filter.Relieved pressure at schrader prior to taking off filter.Possibly disturbed valve stem.Connected pressure tester and it has started everytime since.Tester is still connected until I get a new stem.My clue was when I put tester on,cap was wet at cap of schrader before removing cap
