GMC Jimmy blower motor not working

My friend has a 1998 GMC Jimmy. He has the automatic air control features.
The blower motor will not engage when the system is on heat or AC even
though he can feel cool air at the vent. We know the blower motor works
because a mechanic was able to get it to spin by connecting it directly to the
battery but did not know the reason that it would not work when the system
was on heat or AC. Someone told him it was a transistor but I've had no luck
searching for a fix.

Most likely the blower motor resistor. Easily replaced. Here is the link to the one I believe you would need as long as I have the model correct. https://www.am- autoparts.com/GMC/S15Jimmy/blower-motor- resistor.html

98GMCK1500..thanks for the answer. I had him send me the diagnosis he received from the deal which states, "The blower motor transistor is failing. The transistor normally fails due to the blower motor drawing to many amps through the transistor causing it to fail. Tech recommends replacing both the blower and the transistor." Do you believe they are using transistor and resistor interchangeably? The itemized estimate says "Blower Motor Resistor: Ground for the blower motor has shorted inside the resistor."

Sounds like they are definitely talking about the resistor. (It resists the amount of power going to the blower motor ie. low med high ranges). I wouldn’t replace the blower. Sounds like they just wanna make a few extra bucks. The resistor is a $15 part that can be done yourself. I’ve replaced mine twice in my 98 gmc truck.
