How to change the blind spot detection system warning sensor (Object sensor/ control module
69 Answers
All these junk system are failing. Had one changed $700, and next week the other one failed. Forget it.
They changed the part number for these. They have an updated version of the sensor. The first one had a vent in it. Makes sense , especially in the Fu....k rain, and snow. The sealed the second one up better. States like Arizona will not have this issue.. I went researched 3 car companies they all place them outside the passenger cabin..
I’m having this issue now it’s causing other things to go back as if I have an electrical problem all kind of warning lights are going on and then off
Same here. All kinds of messages popping up on the driver information screen.
Im having this same issue. My car nearly caught on fire twice now. White smoke was billowing from my taillights and before that my entire instrument cluster went dead. I snipped the sensors off and no longer have an issue other then my DIC says side sensor failure and sometimes my side mirror blknd spot light stays on for no reason. I have a small claims daye against chevy on 4/2/19. I suggest you guys do the same or lets get a class action going. Check out the photo i attached.
My 2014 has same problem pulled the fuse. Can’t use all the functions I paid for sucks. Wondering why no recall.
jkfuller2001 answered 5 years ago
Is there any DYI videos or instructions on how to do this work?
I noticed my passenger side blind spot alert was continuously on and blinking. Now? It won’t turn on. Today I got an alert saying I needed to service my side detection, front detection and something else that I can’t remember. So annoying.
Same with my 2014 impala. Called gm would not do anything.
Dmcgheejr- Can you tell me what fuse you pulled out? I'm having the same problem now
Same problem, passenger side replaced under warranty in 2017, failed again now its out of warranty. Where is the module located, can I replace it myself?
Here is a picture of what happens to them. They are in the rear bumper and shielded only by a crappy piece of tin that just hangs down, so it gets worthless quick. Salt spray gets all over it and the connector is on the bottom toward the wheel. Then it gets in and swells up and corrodes. Here's my drivers side one.
Here is where it is located under the bumper. You can get to it if you just look under the car by the mufflers on either side. You don't even need to jack up the car.
Where is the best place to get replacements???
jkfuller2001 answered 5 years ago
Zack, Thanks for the photos. I was able to find them on my car...Now my question is how to get them out of there?
Disappointed23 answered 5 years ago
I had the same exact problem with my side blind zone alert system. At first it said to have it serviced. Then my fob would no longer unlock my doors without manually using it, the same day my car would not start. I had all sorts of lights and warnings go off. My whole computer system went haywire thus not being able to start my car. After getting my car started, I didnt not have any gauges, lights, nothing. It was very dangerous driving it to the shop. So if you leave don't replace the side blind zone modules, this will likely happen to you. In order to make GM be responsible for these faulty modules, you need to file a complaint with NHTSA. If enough ppl file a complaint, they will look into the faulty modules and make GM recall them. The NHTSA is about vehicle safety, and obviously a car that is smoking from somewhere in bumper is not safe.
I filed a complaint online at nhtsa.gov it took 2 minutes, I wish everyone having this problem would do the same
@jkfuller2001, they just slide out. They may be in there tight if they are corroded, but you can push from behind and push it out. I filed a complaint too. It's a huge safety concern. Mine actually made my gas pedal not work every time too.
Was wondering if I pull the fuse and I lose some of the functions, is this ok for the rest of the car? I’m ok to lose my rear camera and the side detection light if it mean (because it is stuck on even with the car off) that my battery doesn’t strand me somewhere. Had the wire harness and same sensor replaced about 20k miles ago.
My 2015 Chevy is having the same issues but nothing is showing up on the dash. No error codes or anything. Just the passenger side indicator light is always on; even when the car is not on. What did it cost to have a dealership fix as I'm not mechanically inclined to know how to do this type of stuff?
Took my 2015 impala to the dealership today and there is now warranty for this problem through the dealership
That is AWESOME news Nicole. How many miles do you have on your vehicle? I'm at 41,000 just off of bumper to bumper they tell me. I'm taking mine into the dealer tomorrow. Did they give you anything in writing from GM that they are now going to cover this under warranty? Just curious for ammo if I have to argue with them.
Same q Nicole how many miles? I’m at 52k well past the bumper to bumper
jkfuller2001 answered 5 years ago
I just filed a complaint with the NHTSA
GuruLDK12 did you pull the fuse? Did it work? My impala wouldn’t start this morning, I’m thinking car wash aggravated the situation.
I pulled the #62 fuse a few days ago. So far everything that should be working is running fine and the side detection light that was on is now off. The rear camera is still working so all I really lost personally was the side detection lights. Just have 3 warnings/notifications pop up every time I turn on the car, but as I said, seems to be working fine.
Got my impala to start by tapping on the drivers side rear bumper section. Brought it to a friend who is a Service Management at a Chevy Dealership. He told me GM redesigned the sensors and wiring harness, all in one. He said there is a program out there that covers this, up to 80k. I’m probably out of luck because my 2014 has 141k. If you having problems with this, it’s nothing to play around with, it affects a lot of electronic elements of the car. Trans, Airbags, Cruise, Dashboard, Stabilitrac, etc. I’m biting the bullet and having it fixed by the dealer. I don’t know how much yet. I would recommend calling GM and complaining along with NTSA. GM (800) 222-1020
Just stopped at dealer. Chevy is covering this under program for certain models. Have dealer run VIN to see if you’re covered. I have 2015 LTZ with 44k miles it’s covered have appointment next week.
I’m at the dealer now. I told them what was wrong and showed them a printout. They still charge for a diagnostic and replace both. So it cost $100. 2015 Impala

Would love some more information on this warranty Nicole! My 2015 impala LTZ has 62,000 miles and the right side blind spot module went out. Need a little ammunition when I go to the dealership Monday.
My 2014 Impala module and harness needs replaced dealer says they are looking into if there is any coverage otherwise it was $1300. Lots of smoking now all kinds of electrical issues. Called Gm today and they said there is no coverage for this issue. Took the complaint and said if we pay to have it fixed then a recall comes out they will reimburse us. What a relief....NOT. Filling out a NHTSA complaint now
I wanted to add there is 17 pages of Electrical complaints with the same problem on NHSTA. How in the hell are they not fixing the problem for everyone. This is a danger cars catching on fire and causes accidents. Not safe at all
My dealer in Chicago is waiting for the part. Found this.
Jordan2015LTZ answered 5 years ago
Just dropped mine off at the dealer. No mention of any kind of coverage.
Car is at dealer now. Both modules, wiring harness, and labor covered under special program. 2015 LTZ
Disappointed23 answered 5 years ago
I dont think a lot of dealerships are aware of the special coverage that GM is providing. I have been in contact with GM, Sent them all of my info and haven't heard anything from them yet. Also, the modules are on backorder and there isn't any estimated time for delivery for the parts. My car has been in the shop for 2.5 weeks and still waiting for parts!!
Here is a screenshot of the special service page 1. Document ID: 5310108
MRobinson317 answered 5 years ago
Just left the dealership. Same issue as everyone else. We need 2 sensors and the wiring harness. Estimated cost with labor $1K.
Jordan2015LTZ answered 5 years ago
According to my dealer, my 2015 LTZ is not covered for whatever reason. I wonder if it would help if I showed them the above bulletins?

Ref. Document ID: 5310108 #N172097060: Special Coverage Adjustment - Side Bind Zone Alert Module Water Intrusion (April 1, 2019) Covers 2013-16 Cruze; 2014-15 Impala; 2013- 17 Acadia. Up to 6 yrs or 80,000 miles. Have an appt to get mine done Friday 4/19. Hope it also clears up the Front camera and park assist warnings.
I just went to the dealership today and said GM will fix it for free. Your vehicle must be no older than 6 years old from the date it was manufactured and less than 80,000 miles. I set up my appointment to have this fixed
Chevrolet wouldn’t fix my module under that 80,000 mile 6 year program they said they can’t find a code they won’t do nothing, I’m fighting with Chevy right now because a GM engineer said they won’t ever find a code because it’s not a code in the computer. It’s a scam.
Disappointed23 answered 5 years ago
Chevy came out with a special program on April 2, 2019 to cover the side blind zone alert wiring. Contact GM Chevy. I did it through email. My car is currently being fixed at no charge to me.
Is that a different program? Because I was there today and they wouldn’t fix it unless there was a code found, they said they can’t do nothing unless they find a code.
I just got my car back from the dealership, and my blind spot detector is fixed. Cost? $0.00 This is not a recall. Your blind spot detection system must be inoperable. I was told GM came out with a new and improved module, so this won't happen again. This one is a sealed unit so water can't get in and freeze during the winter months. My car was gone for 2 days, but the dealer gave me a free loaner car while it was being fixed. Can't beat that deal.
MRobinson317 answered 5 years ago
What email did you use? I just finished a text session with Pinky and she stated there was no recall or special program covering this issue at this time. Please help.
I have a 2014 with this sensor problem all reporting. Just received a Customer Reimbursement request form and letter today. Watch for yours. even though I'm past the date they say they will cover. Having the dealer work to have them pay to put in the new parts. Keep this going here as Chevy is watching ! Reputation problems will drive results.

I am over the miles and received a letter from GM telling there may be a problem . Sure enough I had started to get the alert on my dash that same week. I contacted my local dealer and they are quoting $715 to replace.GM dealer is frustrated that GM is sending out the notification when they know that my car is past the miles and they won't cover it. Sounds like some dealers are figuring out the work around. Please let me know if you really get the refund.
MRobinson317 answered 5 years ago
Got a letter from GM yesterday stating there was a problem with some 2015 Impalas and that they would fix for free if less than 5 years old and less than 80k miles. I'm headed to the dealership will post results later.
For those of you who got a letter, are the letters specific to your vehicle/vin number? Can you post a picture of the letter if it's not specific to your car? I just bought a 2014 Impala (personal sale) and I'm worried the previous owner will get the letter. All warnings came on and gauges stopped working as well as the heat/AC fan a week after I bought it! Took it in to our local GM dealer before I saw this forum and got a quote to fix it ($900+) Then I asked about this special coverage and they said it's not a recall and it's not on the GM website, so it may not be covered.
I got the letter as well. It is specific to my individual car and has the VIN on it. Says under 5 years and 80k miles. I’m well over 130k and was told by the dealership(s) that there isn’t much they can do. Called GM and they told me since I’ve already had to replace it once that they would reimburse the cost of the prior fix. Problem is, why would I get it fixed knowing the problem is going to occur again?
MRobinson317 answered 5 years ago
The letter I received was VIN specific. The car is scheduled to be fixed next Thursday at no cost to me. If you have a vehicle under 5 years old and under 80k miles bring it to a dealership so your issue will be noted.
I have a 2015 LTZ Impala.. My side detection went out about 6months ago.. I didn't think much about getting it fixed so quickly becaus it's really a luxury. So I decided to go ahead and take it in to have that issue fixed along with the camera before the warranty ran out. I took my car to the dealership on 5/06/19 today is 06/23/19 and it's still in the shop, because the part is on back order. I'm Frustrated... Dealership says their is nothing they can do. I call GM they apologized stating the part was on back order. I mean dang are they even gonna make the Part.. Please help with answers if you can.. I just want my car
I have a 2015 LTZ Impala. My car was covered under the warranty being upgraded to cover the part. After waiting 7 weeks for the part because of back orders I had it fixed. Just in time. Because now when the gauges blinks out and returns on, it drives off slowly each time I stop. After the car sits it resets and the engine light goes away. Well they replaced the part and on the way home from the dealership it did it again! Seems to happen when I drive across a railroad track for example. Car is back in the shop for the service writer to drive to react the problem. I will update this when I get the car back. But this is a serious problem!
I HAD ONE REPLACED FOR $460 AT DEALER. 3 MONTHS LATER I HAD THE OTHER ONE GO BAD. I DECIDED CAR WAS NOT WORTH ANOTHER $460.00 DROVE 50 YEARS WITHOUT BLIND SPOT SENSORS. GOT LETTER FROM GM IN JUNE 2019. SENT COPY OF BILL AND GOT A CHECK FOR THE $460.00 WISH NOW I WOULD HAVE HAD OTHER ONE REPLACED. MY CAR HAS OVER 80,000 MILES SO THIS ISSUE IS NOT COVERED NOW.
Mslucy2019 answered 5 years ago
My 2014 Chevy Impala sensors have failed. Quoted $990 to replace. My car has 90,000 miles. I'm going to contact GM to try to get this covered based on all the info I have read on this thread. Also will file a complaint with NHTA.
Still part on backorder with no ETA car been at dealership since 1st week of June. Anybody else having trouble just getting the part itself? I’m so disappointed in Chevy. I just want the part. Chevy Impala 2014 LTZ can’t even get the part smdh
I have a 2014 Impala LTZ (108,XXX miles) that had the same issue! The only issue I had AT THIS POINT was that the side detection wasn't actually working and i was getting 3 warnings when the car was started (blind detection failure, camera failure and one other one) but the car ran fine. I Called the dealership with the issue and they ran my VIN and found that my car was covered for free replacement parts and labor. I waited 6 weeks for parts arrive and then took car in to have the issue fixed. Got the car back and it ran fine with no warnings at start up and the side detection was working great... Drove the car for about 10 days and then had major issues. I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden my gauges stopped working, my heat shut off and I was getting tons of warnings (tire monitor system, Front camera, theft deterrent system, side detection failure, Airbags failure, Cruise, Stabilitrac, etc.) I called the dealership to let them know the problem and they said they will reorder more parts and maybe the replacements were "defective"... I'm guessing the dealership probably just disconnected it, cleaned the corrosion and put it back together and called it good. Who actually knows... I am demanding 2 new sensors and wiring harness!!!! Thanks to @GuruLBYQB In the mean time I pulled #62 fuse and will just deal with the 3 warnings at start up until its fixed correctly...
Just got mine fixed on my 2015 LTZ. Went to a large Chevy dealer that had the part on hand. They order a new one when they use one in stock due to back order and delay.
I have a 2015 Chevy Traverse LTZ. I don't see any mention of traverses being effected but I have the similar problem you're all describing. The indicator lights in each side view mirror are on constantly when the car is running. Every now and then my DIC goes black for a few days and then magically comes back to life.
I own a 2014 Chevy Impala LTZ. I've experienced all the same problems described in this thread. During the winter of 2018 - 2019 I started seeing the side detection light come on randomly and staying on even when the car was not running. The problem progressed and one day as I was driving down the highway at 60 MPH at night all powered systems flashed on and off including my headlights. I brought the car into the dealer and was told it was not covered. I reluctantly paid the $1,456 bill. A few months later I received the notice that there was a recall and I submitted a request for reimbursement, which I did receive from the dealer. Now a little over a year later I am having the same issues. I knew I needed to get the car back to the dealer, when I called to get an appointment they were three weeks out. Now my car won't even start. I am planning to try the #62 fuse removal. My car has just under 80,000 miles. I have seen some mention a five year limit and some mention a 6 year limit. I'm hopeful the dealer will stand by their work from last year. I am planning to record a complaint with the NHTA as this is a serious safety issue.
My 2014 had the sensors go bad while under ext wty. Just paid the deductible. Now, 2 years later, the rt one started acting up again. Of course, not under wty anymore. I just turned the system off in the Settings menu. Oddly, the line item is gone now, so I can't turn it back on. Received letter from GM but was already at 119k, now 135k. I live in the snow belt. It's not just water but salt intrusion. The sensors need better protection from the elements. I don't know what losing blind zone sensors has to do with front collision alert or lane departure warning. I can only see how the radar for Rear cross traffic alert would be affected. DIC warnings for all each start up. So glad I haven't had the other electrical problems reported. Love the car but is expensive to fix.
I have a 2014 impala ltz and my engine will shut off if I go 70 and shuts my lights off as well.. so I now only drive my car in town and don’t go over 60 super annoying and they still have not recalled it, they said my vin number wasn’t under the one the did call and I told them how is that okay when my car is having the same issue
How do I get in touch with either Chevie or GM? None of my onboard safety systems are working. Now my GPS is out too? My side and front sensors went out at about 36K. I thought it was a simple and cheap fix, wrong. Now I have 65K. I love the car but this devalues and makes it worrisome. Richard Y

I have a 2014 Impala 2LT- with LTZ package (69,000 Km/ 42875 Miles) - parts ordered waiting - got the 2019 6-year extension letter from GM- but out of warrenty - cost will be over $1500 Cdn. This will be the 4th set of rear modules installed - including the original ones. As they say, a happy customer brings at least 3 or 4 new customers and a unhappy one will make you lose at least 10. Will never buy another GM again. This problem will not go away. I will require silicon sealant and di-electric grease in the connection and will get thicker winter rust proofing from my local rust proofer.
I just pulled the wires out of the module and am going without the side blind zone feature. I was going to pull the fuse but still wanted forward camera, lane keep assist and park assist. I couldnt get the plug pulled out just by reaching in so i cut the wires to the plug for the sensors on both sides. Had it replaced under warrenty about 3 years ago and now bad again. Not needed in my mind. Good luck.

I have replaced mine twice and now dead again, dealership said no deals on helping fix even though I paid for the "upgraded version" last time. Chatted at GM service for 2 hrs today and was told so sad too bad, GM will not help fix. I have half a mind to cut the wires but am irritated the warning message cannot be disabled.
