Key Stuck in the Igntion.

Asked by Lawrence_n_DC May 24, 2012 at 10:06 PM about the 1997 BMW 3 Series 328i Convertible RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am restoring a 1997 BMW 328ic convertible. It has 103,000 miles on it. The battery was dead. I bought a new one today and put it in. I took time for the system to power up.  I put the key in the ignition and tried to start it.  The streering wheel didn't lock, but the key locked in the ignition.  I can't get it out. The car is in the on position, but I can't turn over the motor.  What do I do? How do I get the key out.?

I tried to jiggle it out. I tried WD-40 on the key. I tried putting my foot on the break, turning the wheel and the key. Nothing.

I took the new battery out, and put it on a charger.

What should I do?

The ignition lock assemblies fail on the vehicles. It is neccessary to have it carefully dis assembled to limit the amount of new parts that are required to make the repair. There are three parts the ignition tumbler which the key is inserted into, the column lock assembly and the electrical ignition switch. Typically the tumbler or the ignition switch failed but agressive attempts to turn the key can ruin the lock assembly. There are numerous BMW repair facilities outside the dealer tat can make the repair. You must fix the column that is in your car. DO NOT attemt to purchase a used column and install it it will NOT WORK. There is a reciever in the column and a control module under the dash which are coded to the DME (engine control computer) that will not let another column start the car. If you are in the Cleveland area we can easily make the repair.

if the car is an automatic and is not sensing that it is in park it won't allow you to take the key out

If it's an automatic, remove the ashtray in front of the shifter and look inside. I'll bet that you will see a coin sitting there. Remove it with needle nose pliers and your shifter will work again and the key will be able to be removed. I just followed this exact procedure and it solved the issue.

Heck ya! Daughters car... found 1 ring worn once! 1 bracelet OMG. and about 90 cents in change. How it wasn't a problem until now IDK. I think she was happier about the ring than having her car fixed.

GuruVBKSL Thank you very much for great idea. You saved me from about $40-60. Last 2 days i was suffering with this issue, and after reading your advise this morning i removed all parts around gear for look inside, observed some cables around, and that was the reason. After tidy up, all sorted and the key was easily removed . Many thanks to all again __++))
