Yes, there was recall on the rear axels. They weren't made out of steel, but rather some cheap alloy casting that failed due to corrosion, especially in OH, PA, and NY. The recall started many years ago. The dealer called them in to be inspected, and being unrepairable, they would offer like $5000 toward a new Ford. Call another dealer or the Ford regional office. Being a safety issue, maybe the Highway Traffic Safety Administration can help you. Who can come up with another $20,000 to buy another Ford?

I took my 1999 Windstar into the dealership for the recall and they claimed they fixed it. They did NOT fix it. My axle is still bent and ruining my tires. The alignment shop said they can't align my wheels due to the bend in my rear axle.
