96 GMC Jimmy ~ Can I take the 4 wheel drive out and not harm the bearing?

Asked by GuruL5K7B Mar 25, 2019 at 10:47 AM about the 1996 GMC Jimmy 4 Dr SL 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm no mechanic but I was wondering if there's a way to take out the 4wd without harming the wheel bearing? Just want to make it a straight 2wd.

Just unplug the front axle actuator switch. It's almost in the center on the bottom of the front axle. This will not allow the front axle to lock in. You could probably do the same with the transfer case actuator motor but unless you put it in 4wd neither the axle or the transfer case are engaged anyway.
