What is the difference between 4x2 and RWD for pickup trucks?

Asked by Darren Sep 03, 2018 at 12:14 PM about the 2015 Ford F-150 XLT

Question type: General

When trying to select a pickup with towing capability, I want to be sure that the
truck has at least power to both back wheels.  I see the feature of "locking
differential" on some.  I was wondering if 4x2 implied a locking differential.  And
then, would that also mean that RWD did not have a locking differential?

There is always power to both back wheels, but when you have a locking differential just one wheel will not spin in the mud etc, either both wheels will spin or the one that has something to grab on to will pull you out.

I didn't get to read the whole question to begin with. 4x2 does not designate whether it has a locking feature or not. 4x4 simply designates a 4 wheel vehicle with 2 drive wheels. RWD merely designates rear wheel drive.

I’m reading this straight from dealers listing with 4X2 on one vehicle then another has RWD. The two should be one or the other since two wheels are the power.
