2015 Highlander

I am looking at a 2015 2FWD highlander that the dealer tells me goes to AWD when the
computer senses it needs to. I live in the Northeast. Does this perform as good as a AWD
in snow and rain?

You say it is AWD then you ask is it as good as AWD- yes it IS AWD- but this is a misnomer because not all 4 wheels are "driving"- unless a vehicle has locking differentials, only one wheel on the front and one wheel on the rear will "drive"- so, it will not be "magic" in snow and ice- better than one wheel, tho- and of course, those 4 small tire traction patches are the same as any car under braking-
