Car starts without the key

Once I left my keys at my wife's place and went to a soccer game a couple of miles down the road.  I did not realize we did not have the keys at the time but the car started anyway at her house and also after the game at the park.  Why would this happen without having the the keys?

The other day the car was stolen and I have the keys in my possession.
