How do I know which type of transmission my 1995 GMC Jimmy has in it

Asked by Ryan Feb 25, 2017 at 02:55 PM about the 1995 GMC Jimmy 4 Dr SLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I've got a 95 jimmy Slt 4x4 that I bought used, the previous owner told me
it didnt have the original transmission in it and that the new one is better than
the original.  (how do I figure out what the current transmission is)

I ask because I recently had to replace a  shifting solenoid and the one I took
out is a good bit shorter than the one that comes with the stock transmission
(as thats what the parts house gave me) and now it  doesn't shift into higher
gears as i accelerate

Well, it should have a 4l60e but 95 was a one off as far as transmissions are concerned. In other words only another 95 model 4l60e will work correctly. Newer ones will bolt in but burn up rather quick.
