How can the dealerships list a car incorrectly?

Asked by Joan Nov 21, 2016 at 05:37 PM about the 2015 Toyota Camry XLE

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Several of the cars from dealerships are listed as a Toyota Camry XLE, but
after looking at the pictures they are a Toyota Camry SE. I sent a message
to each one because I was getting tired of researching and being
disappointed. Green Ford, Cross Keys Auto, EXtreme, Boarman's Auto
Sales and Green Mazda were the five I found.

Many dealerships post cars by VIN/mileage and expect the system to properly decode the cars trim and features, some decode correctly and others do not. They generally do not take the time to check and put some disclaimer somewhere about accuracy and your responsibility to confirm. Theres no real way to get anyone to fix it unless manufacturers broaden the specificity of VINs. Nissan is like this as well, it wont decode S SV SL etc.

It happens all the time -- I see so many cars out there have the wrong transmission listed. Sometimes, it's an honest mistake; sometimes they're trying to get you to contact them under false pretenses. I just ignore the listing when I see something like that; I have no time for either sloppy or dishonest work.

Salesmen are lazy and don't take the time to verify everything they post. Buying a used car is a lot of work.

The dealership doesn't care whether the listing is right or wrong, they just want to get you to come in so they can sell you a car, any car. The only profession that is more dishonest than a used car dealer is the psychic, and especially those psychics who can "talk" to the dead.
