2015 Honda Civic Transmission

Asked by Haris Jan 26, 2018 at 02:20 PM about the 2015 Honda Civic LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I got this 2015 Honda Civic, and when I put it in reverse
or drive it takes a second to actually kick in and start going.
I haven't had this thing in any other car i've driven. It gets
worse when the engine is cold. I was wondering if this is
normal for this model or is there something wrong?

It happens everytime, but gets pretty noiticeable when the engine's cold. The car only has 16k miles on it though.

I believe it's normal for a cvt transmission. I have a 2015 and it does the same. Cvt transmissions do not like the cold weather and is best to warm them up.

It's just that I have never noticed this problem in any car before. A couple of seconds is pretty noticeable when you're starting to drive. Maybe its nothing, but I'll still get it checked out by the honda dealership

Hey GuruSKFD does you civic also have a light jerking issue when driving at low speeds and a little hesitation when trying to pick up speed? Because those are some of the issues I'm experiencing.

Yes. I don't know if it's me or the car. It's a very subtle hesitation. I was thinking I was causing it by not giving it enough gas. I try to see how high I can get the gas mileage so I'll be real gentle on the pedal. I was thinking perhaps too gentle.

Try a tuneup. Sounds like u guys may be experiencing some small misfires. Especially the one who is having hesitation on take off. Also hesitation on take off may be caused by the air filter being ovwrly dirty and sucking in dirt to the sensor mounted on side of breather. If u check your airfiltwr and its dirty take sensor off wipe it down and reinsert and see if it fixes problem

My 2015 civic clunked between gears in slow moving traffic about two days in a row. I added a half quart transmission fluid and it hasn't done it since. 104,000 miles and this is the first I have ever had to add. On a side note, it is time for a flush and refill on tranny fluid (more so for a that gunk that will be on the magnetic bolt), along with valve adjustment/valve cover, oil change, and replacement of drive belt. Sucks that is $500, but will get me another 100k easily. 4th Honda and haven't killed one yet! Use Honda oil and tranny fluid--it's worth it in the long run.

I have a 2014 Civic, bought in late 2013 - CVT tranny. Started having the small hesitations and hard shifts (especially when putting into reverse) at about 135,000 kms. Had it checked and nothing specific was mentioned but a tranny flush & replace made it go away until 285,000 kms. Also, CVT tranny's have access port for the mechanic beneath the body & on the side, but another in the engine compartment and that plug pops out every so often. I was told this can admit air into the tranny which could cause hesitations. No engine misfires ever, air intake filter gets changed regularly and I throw in injector cleaner in the fuel every 3 - 4 months as I do higher than usual mileage (75 - 85,000 kms/yr). Jerking and hesitation was put down to late gear changes and pauses in between gearing up & down at low speeds. Problem is not consistent as when engine is warm and vehicle is restarted, problem does not recur for some time. Suggestion was something electronic/software (no solenoids in CVT) but Honda denies...

It's the CVT transmission it's the most unreliable transmission out there.... never buy cars with CVT transmissions

Mine did this when I first bought it and my car actually stalled a few times. I noticed it only happened first thing in the morning backing out if my driveway. Fortunately never in traffic! They told me to try to let the car warm up before I leave, which works for mine.

I have 2015 Honda civic with 120,000 and the cvt transmission just went out...Priority Honda in Roanoke Va will do nothing to help me. They want $5200 to replace. They know they have a software issue but until enough people complain they will not recall all the 2014 and 2015. Only a select few! I will Never buy another Honda or Acer with a cvt transmission!!

Best suggestion is to call a few of the scrap yards in your area... odds are there is a Honda Civic transmission of your year (+ or - 1) with anything from 40K - 130K on it. Find a price you can live with, have it delivered to a tranny place that someone you trust recommends and have yours swapped out. Baby the replacement for the next 2 years and you should be able to get another 150 - 180K out of your car! (oh and replacement tranny should cost less than $1000)

I have the same issue 2105 civic. 120,00 miles and, a week after an oil change at the dealer, the plug came out/or the dealer left it out . Now the trans is shot. Dealer won't take responsibility and Honda corporation won't do a thing!!!!! So pissed

My mom got my 2015 Honda Civic serviced a month ago because the plug came out and caused it to sputter. She got an oil change, transmission fluid, and a new plug. A month later the plug pops out and I lose all my fluid. Honda is blaming us and saying the problem was done by us driving with too little fluid, that’s there’s no recalls on the vehicle (which the nhtsa has a recall on the transmission), and it’ll cost 8 grand to fix.

If you have a 2014 of 2015 Honda Civic that was NOT recalled in October 2015 you may be in for a very bad transmission breakdown at any time. It will happen with no warning, to even to those of you that maintained their cars and will make your car completely disabled. The cause is excessively high hydraulic pressure within the transmission due to a computer programming error. The recall updated that software. In addition some Civics have an internal component that was not hardened as much as it should have been. Honda believes they identified, by manufacture date, the Civics that did not receive that weak part and therefore left those Civics out of the recall. However, as evidenced here and in many other websites, many, many of those Civics still experienced the failure. It should be apparent to Honda that excessively high hydraulic pressure alone can wreck a transmission even with supposedly adequately hardened parts. The software update that the Oct. 2015 recall provided took 20 minutes and cost Honda $33.33 in labor. Those of us with failed transmissions are having to pay $5000-$6000. The cars had to be towed to a dealer for diagnosis for even the possibility of having Honda cover the repair. Generally Honda refuses. Then, IF you can find a local place that will tackle a CVT, can obtain parts or a remanufactured transmission from Honda (there is some evidence Honda will not sell to anyone but a dealer), and can handle the programming required you'll still have to pay for a tow because your car's wheels may well be locked. It would be UNWISE to install a USED transmission unless you can be certain the recall was performed early on. If not, you may well experience the same failure at some point with that transmission as well. PLEASE CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION AND REGISTER YOUR COMPLAINT. There is strength in numbers. If you've already paid for a repair, if we succeed in getting Honda to accept responsibility, you might get reimbursed.

My boyfriend has a Nissan Murano Convertible with a CVT TRansmission. Went out last fall. Nissan only covered 50% of it. But he had it replaced. Then it went out again in March of this year. Nissan dealer in town held on to it during the COVID lockdown. And then told him they won’t cover a new trans as he had gone just outside the 15K mileage limit for warrantying the work. And Nissan said the same thing. Then the dealer said they had actually put a bad part in it last Fall and maybe could get Nissan the manufacturer to cover it. They said open a case number. He opened a case number. Nissan passed the buck to the dealer. And the dealer passed the buck to Nissan. Then the sealer says they usually have some Goodwill money laying around that could be applied to do the new transmission. He is 65 and has been waking and taking a public bus for 4 months- during a COVID pandemic. He is retired and on a fixed income. They play hardball with him. They want $5700 to put a 3rd transmission in, which is more than he still owes in his loan from buying the car. And when he mentioned a lawyer, they said they won’t talk to him. What should he do?

Forgot to say they took the goodwill money idea off the table as soon as they said it. And they will not guarantee their work or what they admitted about a bad part. And they have not factored in that they should at least credit him for the 50% of last august’s transmission. They agree it should last more than 6 months. I would never buy a car with this type of transmission if I can help it. And I will never buy a Nissan. They are crooks.
