Did you check for spark?, did you try spraying any startting fluid to get it to start? If you can get it to run on starting fluid problem in fuel system. No spark, cheap and easy replacement is Ignition control module. It's located inside the distributer. two screws, four wires. make sure you remember what wire goes where.

This could very well be your fuel pump , especially if it starts or tries to run for a moment when you use starter fluid. I have had my 97 GMC Sierra 4.3 for 10 years and I just put the 4th fuel pump in it . It seems ( so I hear ) that the quality of these pumps are lacking !!!
