You turn off the interior lights with the dash dimmer switch. When a door opens, the overhead lights come on automatically. When you close the doors and get out they go off in a few seconds. When you close the doors from inside you can shut off the overhead with the individual lights. Push on, Push off

I have had this happen a few times. I would stand outside the car waiting for them to dim, then open the door and press the switches again then close the door again. Finally figured it out. Get in the car and start it. Then turn the interior lights off, then get out of the car and lock. The issue seems to be that the switches do not work when the ignition is off.
