Can Cruise Control be Added?

Asked by beaglepilot Aug 17, 2022 at 02:50 PM about the 2015 Ford Focus S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am trying to get a firm answer on whether cruise control can be added to my
car. I installed a steering wheel that has the actual buttons on it, and thought
all I needed was to get into the system to update it for it to read the switch
actuation. Has anyone done this? Is the even doable? Appreciate any help in
advance.

It's possible. There have been aftermarket cruise control systems sold for decades. I'm not sure how it works if you don't have a throttle cable connected from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body. But on a conventional system, with a throttle cable, there's an actuator under the hood that opens and closes the throttle body just like if you were stepping on the accelerator pedal. You can actually see the accelerator pedal moving. When you step on the brake pedal the cruise control is automatically cancelled. This is accomplished by either a cruise control cancel switch or by a special brake light switch that has the cancel feature built into the brake light switch. It's a lot more involved than just hooking up the switches. Hope that helps! Jim

The programming is most likely not there as well. I doubt you can get a dealership to reprogram the computer for cruise control as it did not come with it from the factory so they would be in violation of Federal law. Aftermarket systems if you can find one are not the best and can lead to drive ability concerns.
