Sounds suspicious to me. As popular as the CRV is, I'm thinking that the ones actually made/assembled in Japan probably stay there. I will never buy a Japanese car that isn't assembled there. Your CRV was likely to have been assembled at their plant in Ohio (that thought scares me). A failed battery on a brand new vehicle? Seems unlikely to me. Sounds like BS to me....I'd be inclined to get ANOTHER CRV from this Dealer (don't let them give you the same one back) or just back out the deal entirely and get a Toyota RAV-4.

you have to be careful where you parked your car and where you put the remote key. When they are close together, the signal drained the battery down overnight. Try to put your car far away from your key so they won't exchange signal overnight.

My son sent this site to me. I have the 2015 CR-V EX and have many issues with it, to the point I wrote to the VP Corporate Honda & GM. Today's issue. I left a lunch meeting and my 7 month old car would not start. AAA said it was the battery. Either they installed an "older" battery at the time of purchase, or else there is a parasitic drain on the battery from somewhere within the car. There is a litany of issues with this car, and most cannot be "fixed", as they are inherent within the manufacturing. Give me the older model Honda that was quality, and had stringent oversight on the assembly line.

any body knows why my 2013 honda crv its giving me problems. since the first day I had own this car has giving me issues, during the morning and cold weather days don,t starts. second year few more times did the same thing. this winter again has the same issues one again more than 13 times and last night did it again, so Im sick and tire about this, any body knows what I can do?

We bought a new Honda from the Honda Ocala, Fl dealer. We have had the problem of the car not starting TWICE. A gentleman who was sent from Honda USA to start it tried to sell us a new battery. I refused and the car suddenly started. Took it to a mechanic and said the battery was excellent. I am beginning to think this is a manufacturing defect that Honda does not want to address.

My 10 months Honda CRV 2016 also got the same starting problem, sometimes it does not start. I also think same that's a manufacturing defect because I am pretty sure my battery is just fine.

Mehmet - Have the replaced anything for you? I have a 4 month old 2016 CRV and they've replaced the starter twice now ... I'm picking it up tomorrow with the third starter in it. I'm in agreement that it's a manufacturing defect. I spoke with Honda Canada and they were useless ... said not to worry they'd repair it every time since it was under warranty.

My 2015 Honda CRV will not start. Drove it 5 minutes before no previous problem now just clicking with dash lights coming on intermediately. Thought maybe key fob battery changed it out not the problem. Call the Honda help just got someone reading a owners manual - no help! Looks like its a trade in!

Had a similar problem with my wifes 1 year old 2015 CRV. would not start twice when she had been in the car wash. 2 nd time dealership replaced battery even though the time before it tested good. Last time she was in the car wash the door locks would not open?

No answer , neither do dealers have a answer . Problem for me is in talking with the dealer in WI Milw , they never heard of it , 2 times for me . Dead nothing . Jump it and off we go . Starts every time until the next time . Appt tomorrow with the largest Honda dealer ever .

Peterr49 . The last two times I have had my 2016 CR-V at the car wash, when I went to leave it would not start. Have not had any issues other than this. My son just drove to denver and back, stopping several times to get gas on this trip and no issues whatsoever

My 2015 CRV died on me on June 24 on a trip out of town. Lights worked,horn worked but engine would not turn over. Heard clicking sound of old relay type noise. Could not jump it. Attached a charger for a few minutes and it started. This morning July 28,2017 it happened again in garage at home. Exact same issue. Battery voltage showed about 12.5 volts using a multimeter. Engine will not turn over. I attached a battery charger for about 15 minutes and it started up again. Turned it off and restarted with no problem. Rechecked the voltage with the car running and it showed 14 volts. This absolutely destroys my confidence in driving this CRV and having read the problems others are having I may get rid of it too. This is just not acceptable. Buyer beware.

I have a 2015 that just turned 40k miles and I'm having the same problems, exactly. Honda needs to fix this!!!

My dealer fixed the problem by replacing the battery and the sticking relay for no charge. So far so good. He said he has fixed a few of the same problems already on his own. I am lucky to have a great guy who sold me the car and takes care of any problems I run into. Of course I plan to do business with a guy like that.

My wife's 2015 CRV is doing the same thing as a few above. It is now at the Honda dealer in York PA for the 2nd time. "We found nothing wrong" the first time. Like the above, I am losing confidence in taking the vehicle anywhere, let alone having her commute to work only to be stranded in a parking garage. Guess I better look to trade in for the Rogue or Mazda if it happens again.

My 2013 CRV is doing the same thing. I was told it was the A.C. relay. Replaced it and the same night it wouldn't start. Going to try the ignition relay next. Battery, starter, and alternator are all fine. So frustrating that Honda hasn't admitted this is an issue and suggested a fix.

I have a 2014 CRV and I am on battery #4. Today I drove to work an back. Went inside my house to change clothes came back out 30 minutes later and the battery is dead. This battery was replaced in May. And my car was just in for routine maintenance 2 days ago. I've heard "bad cell", "Louisiana weather", "you don't drive enough". I asked about parasitic drain and the service guy smiled and said that's not happening. Calls to Honda America were totally a waste of time. Thus car has now stranded me more than any car I've ever owned. This is my 5th and last Honda. I'll be trading it. Honda you have a problem.

I have had this happen to me twice now on my 2015 Honda CRV-EX. The first time I had this happen roadside assistance was able to charge my battery and the car worked again. The car was only a month old at the time with less than 30 miles. The second time it happened charging it did not work. My battery showed 12.2 volts, all of the lights would turn on in my car, the Bluetooth worked, radio etc. It would click as though the car were going to turn on, but it wouldn't start the engine. I had to have my car towed to a mechanic. After having full diagnostics completed on my vehicle they found that the cause of the issue was the aftermarket alarm system that the dealership had put on my car. Even though I did not purchase their alarm system the wiring was triggering my car not to start. The wires when slightly moved disarm the vehicle. I now have to pay several hundreds of dollars to have the wiring removed to prevent this from happening in the future leaving me stranded in parking lots. Thank goodness for my mechanic who was able to figure out the problem. Shame on Honda and their dealerships for allowing faulty systems to be installed on their vehicles.

To my surprise there are many people that are dealing with similar issues with their Honda CRV. I have a 2015 Honda CRV and my car will not start. I've had the battery checked and it is not the battery. Honda says they cannot help me because I am out of warranty. What rip off, I am very upset!

I changed the A.C. relay & ignition relays and I haven't had it stall since. They're a lot cheaper than batteries, so try those first. Hope this helps!

wow, can't believe this is as prevalent a problem as this ... ours is a 2016 CRV Touring. It has left my wife stranded 3 times now and had to be jumped off, Honda replaced the battery last week, wouldn't start yesterday! Our interior lights wouldn't work until jumped, but the battery was good, now it wants to act normal when trying to find the problem ... oh course!

I've had this problem with my 2015 CRV twice this week. It's at the Honda service shop now. The battery check was good. They say they need to re- create it to do anything about it. I don't want to take it back until they figure out what the problem is because I don't want to get stranded again.

Honda put a new battery in my 2015 Honda CRV-EX 2 months after I bought the car. They never even told me they did it and I hadn’t had a problem. Now my car is 2 years older, still no problems, and yesterday they told me my battery is no good and I need to buy a new one. They showed me a print out of my battery test, which they have never shown before. They made me purchase one, even though it’s only 2 years old, I had no problems and they said it’ not under warranty anymore. I plan on returning it tomorrow and purchasing one from Costco for $30 less and the same 3 year warranty and not attached to Honda. This is my 3rd CRV. They are built cheaper at every model change. Next time it’s going to be a Suburu Forrester! I’ve had Honda’s since 1990! Very disheartening.

I have the same problem to. 0miles and car is not even delivered. Still in dealership. The put all the extras like hook, aeropack and illuminationpack. After that to wash and wax both. Car wont start. Mechanics has work 2days to get the car fixed. Delivery day was today but dealership called yesterday that car is "crap" not with word wont start. Little scared to buy this crapy honda crv. We'll see when i get the shitty car.

We were eventually pushed into buying a new battery, even though ours was only 2 years old, but it tested differently each time, so maybe that was the issue. "fingers crossed" we have had no issues since, but we do lug around a portable car charger in the back. It works the same as an umbrella...as long as you have one, it wont rain.

Just as a follow up, my 2014 CRV-EX 30K miles stranded me one more time, 3 days after it was totally serviced with a new battery (#5). I was told again that “I don’t drive enough”, “bad cells, bad luck with batteries”and that “everything checks out perfectly and is shutting down correctly”. This from the service manager. BS, BS and BS. If i don’t drive enough then their product clearly doesn’t nmeet the needs and driving habits of their primary demographic. The dealer’s GM and Honda could not have cared less. Needless to say, after being stranded again, I promptly said good bye to them, to Honda and to my sweet little CRV.

I took my Honda crv 22014 back to dealer 30 days after buying it from Music City Honda in Nashville. They did a system update however the problem still persist. I drive the car, then stop at a store, car wash, or run in my house to get something quickly. When I return to the car, it won't start. It makes no noise at all when I turn the key. Strangely, I found that if I keep trying, it eventually starts right up on the second, third, or fourth try. Drives fine afterwards until it randomly dies again anywhere from one day to 2 weeks later. I hate this car, but I am stuck due to the amount I still owe on it. Russian Roulette every time I get ready to crank my car!!!! Honda has a lot of explaining to do!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2015 Honda CRV started experiencing problems last week and I needed to change the battery. When turning the ignition key, the dashboard would flash repeatedly and make several clicking sounds. I had to hold the ignition key longer than usual (eg: 3-5 seconds) but was eventually able to start my car. This would occur every day for the entire week. What's odd is all the electronics were still working. I could turn on my headlights, radio, and windows with the exception of the window facing the driver's side. Since the car was still under warranty, I took it to a Honda dealer. At first, they weren't able to reproduce the problem. Later in the afternoon, however, they were able to reproduce the problem and provided me a result from a battery test showing the cranking power was below 40% and the battery should be swapped out. Anyway, after replacing the battery my car is starting fine again.

Had the same problem this week, my car didn't start. I had to use booster pack trough the week even if i drove 200 miles. I went to the honda shop this morning after several analysis they conclude that a cell of my batterie was dead. They change it and everything is fine so far.

Happened twice to my daughter's car. Once she was at campus (different city) and last night. Both times jumped and it starts. Next day, I drove to AutoZone and they tested the battery. Starts and stops fine. Picture attached. AutoZone says both the Battery and the Alternater are fine. And the following day (which is today), I came back from AutoZone parked last night, and it doesn't start again. I made a video as well. Posting somewhere and then I'll drop the link here. Car still dead. Cannot start. and I'll be adding more info. I agree with a lot of people here in this forum that this Honda CRV is crap. DO NOT BUY. It sucks!

My 2015 cry and 2012 Honda glossing motorcycle both do the same thing, anytime of year

Hi everyone. I own a 2015 cry 2015 and have had same no start issue. I have also had my clock.reset itself to December 31 2012. See pic. I think the no start issue is related to auto headlights. I used my auto feature consistently uuntil October when I had another no start. I turned off auto headlights and started manually turning lights off and on. Three days ago I turned auto feature back on and yesterday car would not start. Can other owners tell me that they use auto feature? I have to wonder if there is ssomething still drawing on battery. Thoughts on this theory?

My wife had a 2012 CRV that started with same problem. Battery and alternater were both good, but I noticed the battery was just to low to start the car each time at 10 or 11 volts. And each time the car was sitting (in the warm garage) for over 30 hours after 5 or 6 days of highway driving. Finally while at the dealership for this issue, I found a service buliten online. the internal onboard computer was allowing the battery to drain to low when the car was off. Honda reprogramed the computer, that didn't solve the problem so I traded it in for the 2015 thinking this would solve my problems. Not so. My 2015 now with 43k miles has had the same issue oct 30, dec.21 and jan 1. so long HONDA. I ALWAYS THOUGHT OF YOU AS RELIABLE. No longer.

My mother in law just had the same issue with the 2016 version today and the car wouldn’t start. There seemed to be power but wouldn’t turnover. I started reading this forum and I see many of you are on the same boat. I decided to just let the battery totally drain where it wouldn’t even respond to the remote. Once totally drained, I jumped the car and it finally started up. It worked this time so I would recommend everyone to try this before they replace a bunch of things on the car. Hope this helps.

I was having trouble with my 2014 CRV not starting about once per week, checked battery that was OK checked alternator was OK. I replaced The Ignition Relay never had the problem again.

Today my battery died while my 4 way flashers were on while I was changing a flat..40 minutes people, 40 .minutes.

I have had the same thing happy to my 2015 Honda CRV twice this past week and twice prior to this. My mechanic said it is due to the alarm the dealership installed on the vehicle. The alarm was never activated since I didn’t purchase that feature, but left on the vehicle when I purchased it. When I open the hood of my car and shake the battery...magically my car will turn on. It doesn’t require me to charge the battery. I have an appointment to have the wiring removed on the 17th. I will keep you posted if it successfully resolves the issue.

2015 CRV Touring edition here. The first time the battery died was a few months after I bought it and right after I got done washing it at home. Weird, but I thought it was a fluke and bought a new battery. A couple months later, it died again and then a third time. I have noticed that the battery dies if I don't start it at least once a day. (I can't leave it sit all weekend without starting it). I started wondering what could be causing the constant drain so started looking around. I started with the radio because it always has power. I manually went into the settings and turned the Bluetooth off. (Figuring if the Bluetooth drains my phone battery faster while on, maybe it does the same thing to my car?) I don't think it was the only thing causing a small drain but it seems to have lessened the problem. I haven't turned the BT back on in a couple months and the battery hasn't died yet either. There have been a couple of cold mornings where it seemed weaker and struggled to start which makes me think there is something else also causing a drain somewhere. This was my first and probably last Honda though.

We have a 2015 Honda CRV that has stopped working twice. Each time the dealer has come up with a flimsy reason for why the car did not start. I hope Honda is recording that multiple people are having problems that they are handling these in a very unsuccessful way-- time to start caring about one's reputation Honda! We are never buying a honda again.

I have a 2015 CRV with intermittent starting problems as well. Twice this weekend, once after only sitting for a few hours. Honda told me I can bring it into the dealership to have the battery tested but if it isn't the battery I have to pay those diagnostic charges. Otherwise they will diagnosis the issue further and if they find something wrong (which from many things I've read are highly unlikely since it is intermittent) I won't have to pay those diagnosis fees, but if they don't I'm responsible for those as well. Yep, I was a HUGE Honda fan and felt very proud and comfortable buying my CRV as a single person household to have a reliable vehicle. I'm beyond disappointed in the quality of the car and definitely that Honda has to know they have a problem and are not willing to step up to the plate to help their customers out. This is likely my last Honda as well. Makes me super sad. :-(

I own a 2015 CRV with 36,000 which I purchased new. I have dead battery issues. When I push the button to start it the lights all flicker and it doesn't start. I have had this happen approximately 8 times. Once it happened in my driveway after the car sat overnight. All of the other times it happened after I had been driving the car, stopped for a few minutes, and then it wouldn't start. 3 of these times it occurred after I had been driving at least a half hour. It happened 3 times when I stopped to get gas. It has been to the dealer where I purchased it and each time I've been told that they did a draw test and recharged the battery but couldn't find anything wrong.

Sounds like a bad a battery. Get battery checked.

CAH1899,I have the same problem starting ,Honda says nothing wrong.I have to start somewhere to eliminate issue.Can you you tell me if the relay you are talking about is the solenoid on the starter or is there a relay somewhere else in the system? Thanks

Had the car towed to the dealer after it wouldn't start yet again! They were finally able to get a bad battery code when they diagnosed it. Replaced the battery and haven't had another issue yet.

My 2014 CRV Wouldn't start this morning. Tried couples of time, same thing. First time happened. I purchased it new, now 45k miles, base model with AWD (no fancy options). Outside temp was 32deg. It had sit in the garage for about 4 days. Only cranking. Headlights can be turned on and didn't show low battery power. Read this forum, seems nothing standing out. So, after about 30 min from the last try, I decided to turn the key to START and hold it for a looooong time! I normally wouldn't do it because it's not good ( no use for any issues). But this time, it worked. I guess I could hold the key for 10 or more sec (not sure, but felt a long time). It started just cranking, then there was a kind of different sound coming out slowly from weak to louder, until engine suddenly started. Then, Kept engine running for about 20 min. No problem to start it again several time. Will check battery later. Hope this helps to someone.

Bought my 2015 Honda CRV a year ago. It began having intermittent starting issues 9 months after I bought it. I could start it, cut it off to run in store, come back and out and wouldn't start. However, if we jump it, it always starts. Had battery and alternator tested and they both were good. Replaced starter and it was good for 2 weeks. Now we are back at square one. Same issues. It now has 48k miles and I am not looking to a take it to Honda dealership and pay overpriced labor for them to tell me it is the battery. Sad to be such a nice car. Honda has definitely disappointed! Obviously the 2013-2015 Accords and Crosstours have similar problems because Honda has put out a Technical Service Bulletin (TSM) 16-002 that describes my exact issues although mine is a CRV. I called the Honda dealership and spoke with Service who adamantly told me it was the battery and that TSM didn't apply to my car. I completely understand that, but obviously Honda has issues. Not a fan of this keyless start! Guess we will try replacing the relays next as someone mentioned earlier.

Assuming the normal causes have been ruled out, the Honda CR-V intermittent starting issue has two possible causes dependent upon the conditions. If it cranks but does not start checkout the main-relay drivers side under dash; if it does not crank check out the starter relay on the fuse panel. Typically the main-relay has a circuit board that suffers from cracked solder joints on the board, while the starter relay is actually undersized for the application and eventually the contacts become intermittent under load.

With most recent keyed Honda CRVs (including our 2009), when the ignition fails to sense the key FOB properly, it makes the same sound as if the battery was dead. The same exact sound. Yes, I can go on and on about how stupid that decision was, as making a different sound would resolve so many situations, or at least un-confuse them. The FOB sensor is an "anti-theft" protocol, but what a pain in the butt when it doesn't work properly! Don't get me started on how ridiculous the cost of replacing a key FOB! When our key FOB breaks (and they all break), we buy an empty Honda-styled key FOB on Amazon with a blank key, then transfer the electronics to the new FOB and have the key cut at Honda for about $25 (that sure beats having Honda replace the entire FOB for a measly $400!). But I digress. Our 2009 CRB also has the distinct privilege of having an over-sensitive ignition sensor. The average user, when inserting the key, will hear the click-click-click that a dead battery causes. What's actually happening is that the ignition sensor is not picking up on the FOB signal. For awhile, we thought it was because we were using the Amazon FOB (despite being the exact same shape, size and style, and having the original electronics inside it). We couldn't test with the 2nd key, because both the original FOBs have broken, and one we just trashed (long story). However, we recently found our original valet key, and so we were able to test the ignition with it. Same problem! Average person would get the dead battery sound, but my wife knows the exact way to hold, wiggle, and maneuver the key such that it starts up no problem. It's a brain dead design prone to issues upon issues, and has likely causes a lot of CRV owners to spend more money than they should have. Just thought I'd throw that into the mix, as the dead battery sound does not always mean a dead battery.

We have the same problem with my wife's 2017 CRV. Sometimes it just clicks, then later it will start. New heavy-duty battery fully charged.

Mr. Miller, Inside the car is another power distribution and fuse box. In this box there is a relay which controls the starter solenoid. That relay is probably bad. Over time the relays contact get worn out which leads to this type of intermittent problem. The relay in question is fairly small. Maybe 3/8 x 9/16 x 1/2 and has four prongs (connection blades). I hope this fixes your issue, the relay can be purchased for $10 while many places sell it for $25.

My 2015 CRV began failing to start (push button ignition). At first, the instances would occur months apart. Recently it became more frequent. Would happen after hours of freeway driving as well as during errands a mile away or in the morning after the vehicle had been in a garage overnight. Symptoms - pushing the button resulted in a lot of clicking from the dashboard along with dash lights flashing and the speedometer needle vibrating. The latest instance would result in an apparent loss of all power seconds after pushing the ignition button (no flashing red light on the head unit). Opening and closing the drivers door would cause the blinking red light on the head unit to resume blinking and provide another attempt at starting. Sometimes it would start on the second try other times it would take several and/or waiting hours. Took it to the dealer with months remaining on the warranty. Their first try was to replace the battery. I've read this thread and figured that wouldn't fix it. True to history, the CRV failed to start that evening. Their 2nd try appears to have been more successful. They say then located a battery lead that showed signs of corrosion as if it had been shorting. They replaced it and we've had two days of a trustworthy vehicle. Fingers and toes.

GuruT9SXM Would the starter issue affect shorter periods ? We recently took the car in and had the battery checked and were told it was ok. This morning, my wife drove it on an errand. Came back, no issues but a couple hours later, the battery had drained below what it needed to re-start. Indeed we've left it to have lunch only to return to a dead battery. We think in that case a door was ajar. Other times we've left it overnight in Drive (vs Park). In every case, no lights were on. We had similar things happen in previous years. When the battery is charged it never fails to start but when anything is amiss, it drains at warp speed. Far quicker than one would expect. I'm happy to replace the starter relay as that sounds like a simple check but in our case, would that part accelerate battery drain ?

I made an attempt to troubleshoot connecting a current multimeter between ground and - terminal. After replacing the AC Relay it still appeared to draw 1A with the car off. Granted I'm never sure it's actually off. Could be talking to some key fob inside the house. I certainly didn't see any dome lights or anything else obvious but 1A is pretty heavy draw. With the so called intelligence in the car, I'm not confident I have a good control state for my measurement. I pulled every relay on the board and it was still drawing 1A. Strangely, I hear a relay click when I connect my meter leads to the battery so I'm certainly missing something.

I have same issue as many stated here. Just got 2 new batteries in 5 days and dead again this morning. just had the alternator replaced to keep ac working for $2k/ . I took it to a few mechanics that all said, "Honda has this issue. To get ac to work, you need a new alternator and it's a big deal." So all was well for about a month. Then dead on a 6 mo battery. AAA replaced because under warranty. 2 days later I was stranded at work. AAA replaced it again saying everything looked fine, must have been a bad battery. 2 days later, I am stranded again. It's clearly not the battery! This is so frustrating. There must be something consumers can do. Honda has to take some responsibility for putting out crap cars! Definitely is my last Honda. So sad. Used to be a such a reliable brand. I am telling everyone I know to stay faaaaaar away from Hondas! My mom bought a brand new Odyssey last year and has had it in the shop 3 times already, spending over $4000 because the issues were 'outside of the warranty." according to the dealer. Such BS. DEFINITELY, DO NOT BUY A HONDA!

DRIVE WITH YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON! It was a very simple fix for 2016 Honda CR-V battery problems I was having and is diagnosable with a voltmeter if you have one. After my car not starting more than a handful of times after driving around town or to work I finally found a fix. The problem is the output of the alternator is too low to give sufficient charge unless the headlights are on. For me idling with no accessories on(lights, radio, AC/Fan, etc.) output was ~13.5 volts but a healthy alternator should be outputting closer to 14.5V. It is enough to charge some but frequent short trips will drain the battery as starting the car is a significant drain. After doing some experimenting with the voltmeter by turning on various accessories and seeing how low the the output would go I found that turning on the headlights bumped up the output to the healthy 14.5 volts it should be. It appears the computer is programmed in such a way to do this on purpose and only give full output of the alternator if the head lights are one. Perhaps to gain some sufficiency who knows. The trick is just to make sure you don't use the auto setting for your headlights if you have this issue and drive with them on. Haven't had any trouble since discovering this and it doesn't cost a dime unless you need to buy a voltmeter. Testing Procedure: 1.) Turn on your car and Idle with all accessories off (lights,radio,AC,etc.). 2.) Hook up the voltmeter up to the battery you'll likely see an output less than 14 volts if you have the same problem 3.) Leaving the meter hooked up to the battery place it somewhere you'll be able to see the reading from inside the car 4.) Turn on individual accessories and see what happens to the voltage 5.) Finally turn your headlights to on (NOT AUTO) and if you have the same problem you'll see the voltage bump up to ~14.5

Suggestion: Try a 24F battery (using Odyssey tray and battery cover) One suggestion I used and found elsewhere was replace the battery, tray and cover with that of a 2013 Odyssey ($35 total for tray and cover from dealer). The battery is substantially larger and although snug, it fits without modification. I had to pull the ground cable a bit to get it over the - terminal. Smallest car battery I've come across. It doesn't surprise me that if it isn't properly recharged, it would fail to turn the car over or that after time, if it loses just enough of it's capacity it can't keep enough juice after a short trip to restart. Only downside I can see is it adds some weight. I'll try to update after a few months of reliable use.

@Greg It does sound like it would help but it's more of a place-holder fix right ? In that you shouldn't need to do this if everything's working properly. At least in our case, I believe we didn't need such measures till the battery itself lost a bit of capacity. The car does seem flawed. It has a small battery and a flakey/demanding electrical system that may be too much for a 70% capacity battery. We do 90% short trips but didn't have notable issues till the battery was 3 years old. Then it tested fine (> 60% I think is the criteria) but didn't work well. I'm sure keeping the headlights on would indeed help out and get you by a bit longer on a declining battery so perhaps get a bit more life from it. In your case, did your 2016 work ok till some point where you needed the headlight fix ?

@SadCRVOwner In my case there is nothing wrong with my battery and nothing wrong with my alternator. I do believe there is something wrong with the system, but I think it is a software issue. The alternator is capable of the full output, but only does so for me if I have my headlights on. I don't know how to go about resolving it otherwise if it is a software issue. I admit turning on the headlights is a bit of a hack, but it is an easy to do and free. Another thing I did before I figured this out was topping off the battery cells with distilled water, the levels were a little low in my battery and it is worth checking. My stock battery wasn't a closed system and must have lost fluid to evaporation during hot summers. My problem did only start earlier this year, but maybe a new healthy battery masked the problem I'm not sure. All I know is I still have my original battery, original alternator, and haven't made any repairs to the electrical system and since discovering this fix several months ago have not had a single problem with the car not starting. If I run into the problem again I'll probably get a new bigger battery like you. I'm thinking about putting a video up on youtube to demonstrate the problem and how I diagnosed it to hopefully save others some trouble.

I have the same problem and have gone to five batteries. 2015 CRV. The dealer insist nothing is wrong with the car. Is there a way to get this solves?

Time will tell but so far the 24F is working well. Certainly better than the supposedly "good" original. I had done a "draw" test (connect a multi-meter between negative terminal and negative battery cable, pull the relays, wait a minute for a "sleeping" draw reading). In my case I didn't find a circuit drawing current granted I did swap out my AC relay prior. So far I still believe the CRV battery has only a sliver of capacity to function properly due to it's small size. If it loses 30% the dealer will still call it good but the car no longer functions properly. Couple that with an electronic system that conspires to prevent sleep when it should be and it's an unreliable combination.

Lately my 2015 CRV seems to be having starter issues. I turn the key and car doesn't start, so far, when I bring key back and turn again it does start. This has happened at least 5 times in a month. Plan to take care in to have issue investigated. New battery was put in months ago

@Denise Try replacing the starter relay. Fairly easy to do. No guarantees but it'll cost all of $20 and has a decent shot at fixing your issue.

I found out the brushes were sticking in the holders inside the starter,replaced them and made sure the brush travel was free of debris.

I have a 2016 Honda CRV and in 2017, after starting issues, the dealer replaced the then existing battery. Low and behold just one year after, I'm having similar issues...this time the vehicle starts sometimes and other times it does not! This is not a battery issue!!!! Took it back to dealer today and await the outcome. While researching problems that the CRV may have, I came upon this site.

I have the same problem at first I though I was not pressing the brake hard enough so I pressed harder pushed starter and things worked but now it just does not start. Took it to honda they could not explain problem so I assumed it was battery. They tested battery which they said was fine. I was stuck today and called honda discoveed that warranty expired last month and that i was sol so i can have an examination that will cost a ton , I think they are assholes and would never buy a honda again in a million years.

My 2015 CR-V just started doing that. In my research for answers, I have found this site. Seem it is a Honda issue and not sure what to do. I’ve had my car stall on me twice in a week! Both times, someone had to jump start it for me after driving and parking it for less than an hour! Now, I’m skeptical about wasting money trying to get a new battery if it’s a common issue with this model.

Hello Not sure if this helps but I once owned a honda prelude which would not start only on extremely hot or cold days. Turned out to be the main relay. (I did see a previous comment mention this was their solution as well) Easy fix! Please try this.

Honda Update with electronic parking brake....We had the problem with our 2017 CRV that would not start, battery tested very good. We gave the car a jump start and took it to dealer. They discerned that I had set the parking brake after turning the car off and it drained the battery. They were able to load some software into the car's computer to fix this issue. If you are going to set parking brake, make sure car is still running.

I have had my 2015 CRV Touring to my mechanic for this twice. First I thought it was an aftermarket dash cam that was drawing the battery down. After some excellent troubleshooting my mechanic found that the PCM (computer module) does not charge the battery until it thinks it is necessary. The only way to force the alternator up to charging level is to turn on the headlights. That forces the alternator to start putting out 14.x volts. I have tried to reach out to Honda with the findings but they will not even consider my certified mechanics conclusion. They want me to spend more money to have their mechanics look at the vehicle. I told them that if they could guarantee I would not be charged they could look at the car all they want. Needless to say that is where the conversation with Honda stopped. BTW this same "gas saving technique" was tried and abandoned by GM around 1998 or 1999 according to my mechanic.

My 2015 CRV has same issue. Engine start button does not work quite often, This problem started 2 weeks after I purchased 2015 CRV. Although a new battery was replaced, it still happened. I had a 2001 crv that regular car key was used for turning on the car. I never had turn on car issue. Is there a way to turn on the car using regular car key (key in remote control, like 2001 model) instead of bushing engine start button?

Wow! Glad to know I’m not alone with a Honda 2015 CRV that starts intermittently (push button)Sometimes it starts-on the first try, sometimes on the 20th try. It’s not under warranty any longer. I have replaced the FOB battery. It’s not the battery because it sat for two of the coldest days and started one the first try next day. Doesn’t seem to have any pattern to it but very frustrating. Based on these posts it seems recurring issues and Honda doesn’t seem to care!

2019 Honda CRV.. wife just bought it brand new. 1st morning of owning it and it wouldn't start. Everything powers up as it should but starter doesn't engage. Flatbeds it to the dealership and ofcourse it doesn't have an issue there. She picks it up and drives it home. Day 2, i go out to start the CRV for her so i can see if it does it again. Sure enough, foot on brake, push start button. Everything powers up and starter does nothing. Turn switch off, back on, same thing. I do this roughly 10 times before it finally starts. Each time you can hear an audible "click" which I believe is either the starter solenoid or the starter itself trying to engage without success.

I'm having the same starting problem as everyone else with our 2015 CRV. I relented and let the dealer sell us a new battery that he was convinced was the problem...of course is was not. Then they waned to replace the starter for $700: "sure, but if that doesn't solve the problem, then I want my money back"...of course they wouldn't agree to that (tells you allot). Then I read somewhere that someone replaced a few of their relays and it seemed to work for awhile, but now back to the same problem. I'm convinced that it's related to the sequence required to start the car: the break has to be pressed, then the starter button pushed. I think there lies the problem...something related to either the break pedal role in the starting process, or the controller that handles that sequence. Now I need to either figure out how to trace the problem myself or convince a real mechanic to take it on...

My 2015 CRV does the same thing. The battery is fully charged and tested. The battery on the fob is brand new, but the car may or may not start. Anyone else wishing for the days when you could use a real key?

This is happening to me as well and i have a regular key on my 2015 CRV LX. Battery and starter tested fine so i am going to replace the starter relay and see what happens

Good Luck, and I mean that! I replaced the Main, ignition, and starter relays and it worked for a time, but now it's back to the same problem. I'm going to replace the A/C relay to see if that helps, and possibly the wires to the battery. Will keep everyone posted.

This is clearly NOT a battery issue. Just bought a 16 CRV EXL about 10 days ago, certified and fully inspected with a new battery. Has started up fine every time. Drove it to dinner last night, drove home, left it in garage for 30 min. Came back out to start it, and wouldn't start. Just clicks and flashes from the dash. Tried to jump it with our Odyssey with engine running and revving it. No dice. Let it charge for 30 min with Odyssey still running, No dice. Tried jumping again this morning, no dice. Called dealer who sent tow truck. Tow truck showed up and tried to jump it. Didn't start. Tried again after a couple minutes, and it started right up. A new battery shouldn't drain after 30 minutes with car off, even if there is a drain somewhere. This has to be something else like a starter or other relay, keyless control module, starter, or alternator. This is a pretty common issue on the Honda and car guru forums I've read this morning. Honda gotta figure this out.

Wifes 2015 doing same as many of your answers out shopping trys to come home car wont start jumped it with my truck got it home took battery out and into auto parts they load tested it 3 times 3 reports battery good. Its a Honda issue called honda they say bring it in so much for the old traditional great honda Im going to trade it in Last honda.

I went to Honda, and they told me not to bother with diagnostic testing. They told me "not to go down that rabbit hole" as it is so hard to diagnose. They suggested I hold the fob about one inch to the left and up from the ignition button. They suggested I try opening and shutting my car door. They said I might not be pushing down the brake pedal hard enough. They said one customer had the problem because of moisture...apparently she made the huge mistake of washing the outside of her car. Anyone here interested in getting a lawyer for a class action lawsuit? Honda is stonewalling, and they need to fix this.This is all on a 2015 CRV with only forty thousand miles on it.

I used to have dead battery issues until I started taking my keys out of my car when I went inside for the evening (CRV is garaged). Since doing that, I have had no issues. I think someone else mentioned the key as being a source of dead crank.

My 2016 CR-V Touring is doing the same things most of you have stated. No start, funny light displays, sometimes the hatch will not open electrically. The problem seems to be intermittent. Example: Get in the car to start a trip to PA from VA. Wont start. Clicking. Jump it with a BOOST battery with no problem. Drive 100 miles and stop for lunch. Car wont start. Jump it again. Drive on to PA, then home. No problem for 4-5 weeks then 'bang'...same problem again. It isn't battery (AAA checked). I don't think it's key fob drain since we don't keep fobs closer than 30' when the car is in the garage. Agree the sound is what I would expect for a starter solenoid that won't engage. It has been enough that I'm on the verge of trading it at CarMax and hoping it starts for them. Hate to pawn off a problem but I am not going to go through battery after battery and excuses of not driving enough, out of warranty, nothing wrong, may or may not happen. This string of posts is extensive over a number of years of cars. If Honda isn't fixing it and telling dealerships how, I won't be buying another Honda.

@GuruLGJB1 Try driving with your headlights on all the time. I found an issue with my 2016 CRV that the alternator doesn't give the full output to charge the battery unless I have my headlights on (as in not AUTO). It is a hassle, but I haven't had issues since I've started doing this. It is easy to test if you have a voltmeter. Check voltage of the battery while on with headlights off then check the same thing with headlights on. If you see the voltage bump up from ~13 to ~14.5 volts when the lights are on you have the same issue as me. If you're driving mostly during the day your battery likely isn't charging back up properly if you have the issue I'm describing. Jumping the vehicle gets you going so it likely the same issue. The battery is testing as good it just isn't getting recharged properly due to dumb programming on Honda's side.

It may be obvious, but I forgot to mention; if you do the test with the voltmeter make sure the car is running when you do it :)

Same issue. My 2015 CR-V won’t start but dash flashes. We replaced the battery about a year ago to try and fix the problem but here we are again with no start. Seems like this issue would have drawn the attention of Honda by now. PS. Husband has continued to use old battery on boat, etc without problem. It wasn’t the battery!

My 2015 CR V EXL has 22,000 miles on it. Today it would start and then die 3 or 4 seconds later. It turns over easily just will not continue to run. Has plenty of gas. Any ideas?

Has anyone had any luck fixing this issue? I was having so many problems starting the car, then the issue completely went away for 4 months and now it's back. This is so frustrating.

Also i want to note that my car is a 2015 LX and does not have a push button start, it has a regular key and it still has this issue.

2015 CRV Touring push button start. Getting worse-- often just a click when starting, no cranking. Battery 2.5 yo, replaced to not have to argue with dealer. Better for a couple of days. A great shade tree here in Ft Collins diagnosed it as the starter. When it just "clicked," it was drawing 600 amps! Way too high. Tech thought the click was actually the Bendix on the starter trying to engage. He also thought (and I agree) that the thing has some dead spots where if it stops there it can't start. I also replaced the starter relay which is under the hood in a location not identified by the legend in the cover or the owner's manual. I thought breaking such high current could damage the relay. The new starter fixed it. I'm surprised the lights didn't dim when that 600 amp load was switched on! The lights must be LEDs that are somehow regulated. Not thrilled at this expensive repair at only 52K miles, but so be it. They had to remove the exhaust plumbing to get access. You would need a lift to do this job. BH Loveland CO

I’m at the Honda Dealer Service Dept now. 2015 CRV Touring. I’ve had it jumped at least 10 times over the past year. Two separate mechanics said battery, alternator, starter are all fine. Let’s see what Honda says. This is clearly a flaw that Honda seems to be sweeping under the floor mat. T Blaney

Update on my car: Bought a new starter on Amazon and brought it to a mechanic to install. They very much doubted that the starter was bad on a 4 year old car but said they would swap it. Sure enough, the starter was burned up. The car has worked perfectly for about a month now and fingers crossed that it stays that way. The fix was $90 for the starter, $200 for labor.

It has been my experience with both Honda’s and Acura’s that the batteries last no longer than 3 years. Also, the battery in the CR-V is pretty small. I think they undersized batteries to save both cost and weight. Compare it to a battery in a 4 cylinder Accord.

I replaced the battery on my 2015 Honda CR-V last year. Two weeks ago I went out to go to work and it would not start in my garage. Got it to jump. Was fine rest of day. Next morning it did it again. It would not jump and I paid to have towed to Honda shop. They called me laughing and said it started fine and diagnostics showed no issue. Said battery was fine. I picked up. It was fine for 2 weeks and would not start again this morning???

HAD a 2015 CRV it was five years old,gave it to my son, and got so it was hard to start right after he got it and some times wouldn't start . Made some funny starter type grind noises clicks and dash light would go on and off. i went to start it to move it and he said to make sure you hold the red button till it starts. That was news to me as all i used to do was put my foot on the brake and touch the red button and take my finger away and it always started, Showed him that and no more noises or starting problems.

My 2015 CR-V made a cracking sound when I tried to start it, but it would not start, so I replaced the battery. One week later, I had the same problem. I did a lot of research, and I learned that it was likely the starter relay. As such, I bought the part, and after much research, I finally found where it was located. It was perfect, but when I changed the relay, the problem did not resolve. As such, I'm on to further attempts to fix the problem. But at least now you know where to find a diagram for the relay switch.

I just recently purchased a 2015 Honda CR-V EX-L. This was a gift for my daughter who will be turning 16. I did research on a reliable vehicle with great safety ratings and is equipped with the convenience safety features we al want our kids to have. What I didn’t expect, less than 8 hours after purchasing it, was for it to not start. It would only click. This happened while I was cleaning the car, I did have all 4 doors open including the hatch. So, thinking maybe it was the battery, I charged it and it still would not start. So, I figured it was on the fringe and I killed it. So, I took the battery to Oreilly’s and they said it tested Good?! This left me baffled. So, I went to Batteries Plus and had them test it, it tested good also!? But, it was on the lower end of the cranking amps (550cca) according to the technician. I purchased a battery thinking this would possibly fix it considering it may not not be enough for the load. Went home, installed it, and it initially clicked, but on the second attempt, it started. I let it run for 1 minutes and shut it down. Finished cleaning the car, and when I went to start it again, SAME scenario as earlier in the day, the dash light would come on, but it would only “click”. I read every single comment on three different forums including this one and decided to change out both ignition relays #10, #12 and the starter relay #4, according to the diagram. This has seemed to fix it for now, but it has replicated the symptoms twice out of 20 starts today. I’m planning to change out the starter after we present the car to her “finger crossed it starts tomorrow”. I’m hoping replacing the starter will remedy this situation. Upsetting to spend money on a car, hoping to get a good vehicle known for reliability. But, it’s apparent from reading all these comments above me, this particular year is plagued with electrical issues.

Update to my post above, I ended up changing out the starter. This has seemed to solve the problem collectively with the relay replacements and the new battery. It starts smoother and quieter now on every try. So, if you are thinking about just replacing the relays, I would consider changing the starter too. It only took 1-hour to remove and replace it with just hand tools. 10mm for the battery terminal, 12mm for the hot wire to the starter, and 13mm for the two starter mounting bolts.

We have a 2015 Honda CRV with just over 80K miles on it. Bought it used a year ago. About six months ago it started doing the "will not start" problem intermittently. It would work fine for a while, then it would take 10-30 tries to get the car to start. When you push the button, accessories will come on, but just a "clicking" sound and the starter would not turn over. Read a bunch of threads on this. Tried all of the following: Bad Key Fob battery - replaced the battery. Pretty sure this wasn't the problem as the accessories and such would come on, but it was a cheap, easy try. Problem persisted. Swap out the Starter Relay - in the diagram Billie posted above, number 12. Worked fine for a couple of days, then back to the old problem. Dying battery - Hooked up to a trickle charger overnight, same intermittent starting problem. Replace battery - Put in a new, larger, more CCA battery, same intermittent starting problem. Replaced the starter - problem solved. Basically the starter was dying. Could have been a bad solenoid or bushings. I don't know, I am not a car guy. I had my mechanic swap out the starter. I watched a Youtube video and they had it on a lift and took the front tire off to get to it. I have swapped out the starter on my old civic and that wasn't too bad. Swapping the starter on this engine wasn't in my wheelhouse. Hope this helps, I tried to go least expensive to most expensive. New starter installed cost me $405. New battery was just over $100. It is a five year old car and is my daughter's college car, so I don't feel bad putting a new battery in it as well. Having to put a new starter in a 5 year old car is pretty crappy. I had my Civic for 16 years before the starter died.

Honda CRV Touring .wouldn’t start so change the battery hut didn’t solve the problem so Honda change the starter button on warranty and so far so good I will know more when the cold weather start.

I have posted here over the course of the five years I have owned by 2015 CRV. This week, I was stranded twice with a car that would not start. Once I did have the keys in the car and the second time I did not. The second non start came directly after returning from the dealer who could not find anything wrong. I have filed a complaint with HONDA. So, as soon as I am ready, I will be selling this problem.

I went through the same trouble shooting process as others have shared for a 2015 CRV with intermittent starting problems. I replaced a perfectly good battery, swapped out the relays and the problem came back after a few days. I finally replaced the starter and my CRV has started flawlessly for 3 weeks now. I purchased a new (not refurbished) starter from Autozone because this issue seems to affect allot of vehicles. Since its intermittent I did not want to risk installing a used starter with a defective component. The starter cost $325 nd took about 2 hour to install including prep and clean up. I have changed a few starters over the years on other vehicles but never had one function intermittently like this unit. It was also the most difficult due to the tight area and requires the passenger tire to be removed.
