2015 Nissan Murano Liftgate problem

If you're still looking for an answer: We had ours fixed this morning for the 2nd time - 1st time was in 2016 under warranty. Today they basically had the codes re-programmed - done!

my liftgate also stopped working on my 2015 Murano It would pop open but wouIdn't raise up automatically. I checked all of the basic things (glovebox switch, fuse, etc) and then turned to the dealer. They told me they would have to replace both backdoor spindles ($550 each) and the control module ($670) plus 3 hours labor ($335), all of this in addition to the $100 diagnostic fee they charged to tell me this. And now after the diagnostics, the lift gate won't even pop open at all, making the trunk basically inaccessible. No way I will spend $2000 to fix a lift gate, but not sure what I will do. I know things can fail sometimes, but it is completely unacceptable that a car that is barely 4 years old with 49,000 miles should have an issue of this cost. We have owned Nissans since 2001, (1 Maxima, 2 Altimas, and a Murano) because we've always been happy with them and felt they are reliable. But I'm going to sell my Murano much sooner than I had planned and most likely never buy a Nissan again.

My power lift gate also stopped working (opened fine manually). I unhooked the battery and when I reconnected, everything is working fine!

This just happened to my 2016 Nissan Murano. I have only had the vehicle a little over three years. It will cost $1300 to repair. I would not have the repairs done except that there is no way to open it manually without crawling into the back and opening it with a screwdriver. This will be the last time I buy a Nissan. Interestingly enough, it stopped working immediately after I changed out the battery. They said it was just a coincidence.

Anyone had solved this issue without paying an incredible amount of $$$$. I have a Murano 2016 SL and had the same issue. I will try to disconnect the battery and see if this reset the system.

I have had the codes re-set twice now, in for the third time. Will see, agree that 1200 is crazy to spend on this.

Why would anyone design a liftgate so when it fails the default is inoperative without a screw driver? Why wouldn't you have it default to manual? Poor engineering and too difficult to diagnose. McCarthy Nissan says might be control panel for $811, but won't know until they put it in after ordering it.

Thank you Lori! Same issue with my 2015 Murano...lift gate stopped opening when using key fob or interior button. Unhooked battery, re-connected it, and wa la, worked again on first attempt. Yea Lori!!!!!

Hi all, thank all for the tips. I have a 2015 murano sl, my lift gate just stopped working out of no where. I found a YouTube video that teach how to diagnose the issue, but it's a lot of work. I will try the battery reset before going into any crazy work.

I also have a 2015 Murano that has had the lift gate stop working multiple times. The dealer has been able to reset it but this last time could not. They basically said all the parts had to be replaced. Said it would cost $2800 to fix. That is crazy!! No car should be made that you cannot convert to manual to open the trunk of your car.

We have a 2017 Murano, 52000 miles. Rear hatch stopped working. Disconnected battery, cleaned terminals, waited 10 minutes, reconnected battery and all is fine. I own a shop but MOST are ripoffs. Would have been minimum $500.00 for Nissan to "fix" this.

I have a 2016 Nissan Murano Platinum...disconnected the battery...reconnected rear hatch works again. Mine all of a sudden wouldn't open, beep when pressing key fob, interior button or the one on the hatch. Very glad to see such an easy fix...but why Nissan!!

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery works for a few weeks, then it fails again. Did this for a few months then took to the dealership. They replaced the hatch module and it fixed it....$950 later!

Update on my post 4 days ago...as I mentioned I unhooked the battery and was able to get it working again. Just this AM stopped working....it worked when I left for work and arriving to the office 10min later it would not open or beep (any of the buttons). 2016 Platinum paid over $40k and 3.5 years later trunk won't open. Will never buy Nissan agin.

I have the same power liftgate problem on my 2015 Nissan Murano Platinum a few weeks ago. I took it to the dealership for diagnostics which cost $125, I’m told for them to get to the real problem they have to open up the control module and check also the spindles which will also cost extra $250 for that service. Then I will have to buy the parts that is the module and spindles hitting about $1800. I’m done with Nissan. No More

Same thing happened with our 2015 Murano. Happened right after we had the battery and alternator replaced. Disconnected the battery and reconnected and it worked!

My lift gate stopped working suddenly as well. Why wouldn’t Nissan take ownership of this issue and recall that module. I have had the module housing replaced recently because all tail lights were out. This module housing seems to be the issue? It is super expensive to fix too. I have a 2016 rogue that I bought with 25k miles and it has been nothing but issues with the electrical. Things that shouldn’t go wrong with only 40k miles now. Our other Nissan’s were all fantastic. This may be the last one I buy and I may be just trading this one in soon.

Same with my Murano 2015, i just open it manualy, make a batterie reset and switch off the glove box switch, now it work fine manualy only, fuck the electric open and fuck Nissan, my fist and last one.

Hello all, the same has happened twice to our 2015 Murano. The first time I removed the triple 40A fusable link to see if it had blown. It was good, plugged it back in and everything worked fine. It just happened again this past weekend. Did the same thing with the same result. Was scheduled to go into dealership today but canceled. I despise the process, they can't tell you anything, then charge you a diagnostic fee to tell you what is wrong. It's probably a the switch which some of you have had replaced. I'm a DIY guy, none of this is hard if you had the proper information available. Sounds like it's time to trade the car for a another, but not a Nissan.

Sad to say I have the same issue as all of you, My 2015 Nissan Murano Platinum's liftgate won't open, Been to dealership twice for reset. Told it would be at least 2K to repair- no way do I want to pay this much for a repair that they won't even guarantee. Had been a satisfied Nissan owner- headed back to Honda

2015 Platinum Murano 63k miles with same Liftgate problem described above. Switch won’t open it nor will the FOB. I’ve had it to the dealer 4 times now and they “re-calibrate” it only to have it happen a day later. Thanks for the recco on disconnecting the battery. That works well. Just didn’t figure I’d have to drive a Nissan around with wrenches. If I wanted that I’d buy a Harley.

I guess I am in the club too. 2015 Murano SL with just under 60K miles. No hatch operation. Replaced battery, they have reprogramed the module twice for me, and it stopped working within 2 weeks of each "fix." I heard "$950 parts for new latch - blah blah blah". Seems to me this should be a recall issue if not a safety issue. My first and last Nissan for sure. I was such a fan of this car until this happened, but glitchy modules shouldn't be a *me* problem.

I ended up going with the electronic latch replacement. Cost me $750 plus my time bringing the car back 4-5 times to be re- programmmed. Fingers crossed it seems to have worked. At least for the last 4 weeks since the repair. 2015 Murano with 63k on it. Pretty frustrated.

I was able to get this issue fixed under $200 dollars. First took my murano to the dealership and got it diagnosed, i had to pay $100 dollars, but they told me which one was damaged, and instead of paying close to $1000 to fix it with them, i went on Ebay and found a used replacement hatch strut under $100 for the same year as my Murano, and replaced it myself and it has been working ever since. All under $200 dollars, no extra programming needed it, it just started working after installed.

Can you share the part that you bought on ebay please?

My father (who is 85) has had the same issue and although he bought an extended warranty, Nissan was never able to fix the issue. The gate would work then stop. They replaced all sorts of parts and now say it needs a back door harness and would cost over $3000 to repair .... to repair something that they never fixed properly. It’s seems like Nissan is well aware and would rather wear down customers. Anyone know of a governing body, in Canada, that we can move ahead with some sort of class action. This is a well documented, ignored issue. Thoughts?

The answer is to complain to Nissan corporation directly. They are not thinking a failed latch it is worthy of issuing a recall, but they WERE willing to split the repair cost with me at my local dealership. It pays to be the squeaky wheel sometimes, but go right to the corporate level. In the midwest this wound up costing me around $400, Nissan paid the other $400. Better than nothing!

I have a 2015 Nissan Murano SL... Check your battery amperage output before you take your Murano to the dealership. I had all the same symptoms that everyone else has had, to no avail I checked everything else including fuses. Long story short, its the battery! Using your liftgate drains your battery before and after you turn your car off, especially if your battery is more than 2 years old and live in cold or hot weather climate. Yes, I did the battery disconnect, checked the main switch at glove compartment, checked fuses but nothing seemed to work. So today I start my car and everything runs perfect minus the tailgate not working. I turn car off and go to restart...nothing, zero, nada..not even a smiget of life anywhere. Hmmm.. freaky I thought, what now? I plugged in battery charger, and a bit of life starts to come back. Wow! Could this be that easy? So I take my battery out, run to Costco, exchange for new battery and drop it in. Volah!!! Car Starts right up and then for the "couo de gras"... I click the tailgate button and it opens right up !!! I had read somewhere that if your battery is not putting out minimum 11amps of power you will experience some electrical issues, one being failed of tailgate opening and closing automatically. I hope this is useful to most of you with tailgate raising issues. Remember, if everything else fails, check your battery output!

Replacing the latch for around $800 ended up fixing my lift gate issue. After replacing the battery and all the back and forth to the dealer they finally decided the latch needed to be replaced. It was a massive headache and probably should have been a recall by Nissan. I’m just glad it’s working now since it was a huge inconvenience to not be able to open it manually. Poor design.

Same issue here. It happened after I loaded my kid's bike in the back. Thought I had broken something. Saw video saying it could be the car not registering it's in park, and therefore not activating the circuit. My cheap scanner has not registered any error but it's not the fancy Bluetooth tablet one I saw on the video that they used to just reset the whole thing. Apparently can happen after changing the battery or when battery dies. Anyway, checked all fuses and battery (all ok), and opened the back panel and saw two things that seem off (see picture): 1) what looks to me like a broken fuse to the right of the liftgate motor 2) a broken component Can anyone identify those and tell me if they could have caused this? Tried the battery thing tonight, with the car off and didn't wait much before reconnecting. Didn't work. Am I doing it wrong? Thanks!

My dad's '17 Platinum has this issue. Dealer thinks it's a latch but wants $800 for it. Reading this and other threads, I'm not sure if it's the Latch or the Power Module. Both expensive to fix. Anyone know where the PowerModule is located? The Service Manual is a bit confusion on it's location. To Guru9VG1V6, you don't need to wait 10 mins. If you remove the + AND the - negative terminal and then right away put it back, it resets it. Works for about a week maybe 3-4 days and then stops again. PITA!

2015 Murano SL w/ about 80K miles on it. We bought it new. Warranty of course is over. Took it in to the Nissan dealer in Dublin, California yesterday. They charged a $200 diagnostic fee and now want $1,806.52 + tax to replace the spindles in the rear door. Our other car is being replaced shortly as it's much, much older with over 200k miles and it's time to go. A new Nissan was on my shortlist. Not any more.

Try this reset procedure. Open the liftgate and hold the liftgate button (door jamb rear of the liftgate). It'll beep twice. Physically lift the gate fully up....it should beep once more. You've reset it.

Thanks for your suggestions regarding the battery. Disconnected the battery, cleaned the terminals, and reconnected battery. Immediately, the back door was operable. Battery was 6 years old. So, I replaced the battery at Costco to avoid future problems. Beats the heck out of paying Nissan $2,000 to fix a problem, which they are likely well aware of, with a new $125 battery.

I have a 2009 Murano LE with only 15,000 miles on it. The hatch started failing years ago. Initially it would not latch. Then it started the not open issue everyone else is having. The strange part is, if the battery get under charged to the point that the vehicle won't start the hatch will start to work but not have enough power to fully lift the hatch.

2024 post. Same story here with my 2015 Murano. Just quit lifting or closing the tailgate, either with the dash button, key fob or rear button. Tried the disconnect the battery trick. Didn't work. Tried pushing on the fuse to see if it was loose - it wasn't and made no difference. Bought a fuse puller and ordered a new fuse. Pulled the fuse, tested the continuity on all 3 sections of the fuse and all were good. So I put the old fuse back in and the auto lift started working again. Go figure.
