Car makes loud whrrrrr sound

Asked by bbben0721 Mar 02, 2015 at 06:35 PM about the 2001 Ford Focus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok.  So my car makes a sound that is somewhat like a hum that will get progressively
louder as the speed increase.  I took note that the noise goes away when I am turning
left.  I can only hear the noise when I am going faster than 30 mph but it will go away
when turning slightly left (about 30 degrees) but will NOT go away when I turn right at
30mph.  I believe it is a wheel bearing issue but I am not sure how to diagnose the
problem or which wheel bearing it is.  I recently got brand new tires back in late January
and only have put about 1,000 miles on them so it can't be the tires because they
sounded great up until two weeks ago when I got in my car one day it was quiet but the
next morning it was making a decently loud whirring sound.

May be your CV shaft also. Check the big rubber boots behind the wheel hub. If you notice that there is grease all over your floor boards, inspect the boot for cracks. The grease may have completely emptied itself from the boot. If it has, you will have to replace the shaft. Here is a short video on how to diagnose a bad wheel bearing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdRpnK5MGQ8

Son had the exact same issue with his 05 ZX4 and we just replaced the rear brake drums. The drums we bought had the bearings already pressed in. That completely got rid of that noise. The bearing on the right rear had a lot of play in it so therefore it was worn out. Two drums with bearings were about $130 ish.
