car starts, brake lights out, car cannot shift

Fuse 54 15 amp. Check this fuse at the inside fuse box, it powers the brake lamps and shifter interlock (lockout if the brake pedal isn't pressed). If its blown you may have the brake switch at the brake pedal or its wiring near its connector bad.

Mine was fuse F42, 15A in passenger fusebox, which caused the gear selector to be stuck in park. Having not been able to test the solenoid, I tested the brake light switch (OK) but found the brake lights not working. Replacing the fuse got it all working again! [Ford Focus LX 1.6i Auto Estate petrol 2002]
