Asked by cerxn Sep 04, 2019 at 01:20 PM about the 2016 Mazda MAZDA6 i Touring
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
infotainment system continuosly reboots, only last radio station plays. I'm in
Portsmouth NH and they said many same issues in the last weeks. no schedule
or what to do, but from Googling it sounds like this has been a recurring issue
all over the country for several years

They said that they need to replace the entire unit, but since they haven’t seen this and there are so many they have no parts. But it seems this has been a problem for years
My dealer says it was the result of a corrupted file coming from a local radio station in New England and Mazda says it cannot be fixed ie you need a new CMU - which they will pay for. 200 people are on the list for this at Sentry West Mazda.
I think I'm at the same dealership (Sentry West) but being on a list isn't yielding any results. It's almost a month now on my vehicle...what to do with no end in sight?

Called yesterday again, no answers they don’t have any schedule. After Googling this is not that new it’s happened in other areas for at least 2 years.
I doubt people have gone two years with this issue....so basically we're on a waiting list that may last months or years.

Agree. My point was this isn’t isolated or new. It’s been happening for a while. Tick tock.....

Same dealership! Getting no answers. People have to start complaining more to the dealer service dept and the Corporate Mazda.... that old term... the squeeky wheel gets the grease. Not enough people complaining about it so Mazda is doing nothing.
Called them Monday: --Front desk answers, transferred to service, no one picks up. --Call back immediately, no one picks up front line. --Wait 45 min, front desk picks up, no one picks up in service. --Call back immediately, explain to them no one is picking up in service, they see if anyone is up there, finally talk to someone. --They supposedly asked for 75 of the units they need to replace, received one. I'm on a list of 200 people, they will service when my time is next as they will do them in order in which they were received. --I still have a malfunctioning backup camera, no ability to change fro one radio station to any other station or input, no handsfree calling. --I've contacted the Mazda mothership, and they just refer me back to dealer.
Can you confirm that your dealer said the replacement will be done free of charge? My dealer is quoting me $1200 and when I contact Mazda to protest they're saying "they're still investigating" the issue

I got verbatim the same answer 75 requested, 1 received. I contacted Mazda Corp again today and every time I contact someone I mention the safety issues. I intend to be a nuisance to them and the dealer until something is done. Calls once a week, posting on the old social media etc. My dealer told me Mazda was covering "a portion" of the repair because its a known issue. At this point... I don't care who pays! I just want it fixed. Bottom line... this was an ongoing issue with CMU failure, they replaced them till they ran out of parts and now there is an unknown factor that caused wide spread failure in New England. No parts anywhere to be had, they have to be manufactured.(will they do this? don't hold your breath)
I'm going to be calling every Monday. I just did again and got forwarded to voicemail, will try again later. I asked Mazda corporate to confirm they would pay and never got a response. The guy I spoke to last week said it would be covered, but worrisome that there are so many stories out there.
I just got a call from service that my parts are in and they want to schedule service. We'll see how it goes...

Awesome!! I wonder where you were on that 200 peep list? Hopefully my call comes soon.
Hopefully. They are already scheduling them. I wonder if you call they could tell you how far down the list you are.

I ended up calling to check, appt made. Also was told that it def was GIFs sent from radio stations. He told me the stations and I can't even remember them now because I don't listen to them. Weird how that could still affect all the CMU. Holding my breath till I drive out of there with no problems.

Oooooh haha 93.7 no, but the other two are on my fav list that I rotate through. Certainly hope no more bad GIFs hit the airwaves!
Those are the stations that they told me initially, and my radio is stuck on 93.7. I generally go with 985 in the mornings, so while it's not horrible....it's getting old. I thought with a moniker like Madam you were not in my demographic :)
Car is in the shop today. Got a message about hitting 60k and recommending maintenance so will cost $250, but worth it considering oil change is normally $80 at Jiffy Lube, and this fix will ultimately be free. We'll see how it goes.

Will be great to drive out of there without your dashboard brick. haha I'm contemplating adding Android Auto since they will have the thing apart already.
Also fun: my loaner didn't have navigation installed when I hit the button. But if it's finally done, it's been six weeks of not very much fun I'm looking forward to putting behind us. Now just need to find a good interior cleaner locally.
I just went to a NH dealer for maintenance and get the infortainment system replaced. They also quoted me $1200 for the CMU. Are the dealers paying for this or not?
