vacuum hose problem?

Asked by clairethebear88 Nov 19, 2012 at 04:57 PM about the 2001 Ford Mustang Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my mustang is having problems due to hoses. i've had this problem before, but i don't know which
hoses are causing it. my rpm idles high for long when i start the car, and when it idles, it will
sometimes squeak then dip far below 1000 rpm and then die. it usually idles just under 1000 rpm. it's
also losing power giving me bad mileage. i was told it was because a hose that creates a vacuum is
loose and needs to be connected firmly. which hose is this and where is it located under the hood. it
would save me money and time in the future if i can just fix this myself. i have a 2001 v6 manual ford
mustang. thanks!

TOM'S ANSWER REMINDED ME OF THIS. DO LIKE TOM SAID, EXCEPT DON'T LISTEN PULL OFF ONE HOSE, IF YOUR ENGINE IDLE DOESN'T CHANGE THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM. IF IT CHANGES REPLACE HOSE & -PULL THE NEXT HOSE & REPEAT.

There is one sure fire (pardon the pun) way to find a vacuum leak. Use a propane torch, unlit and turned fairly low. Run it along all the vavuum lines and connection, including around the intake manifold. When the idle goes up, you've found the leak.

if you have 1 leak now. you'll have more coming. should replace the lines . its fairly easy. do 1 at a time so not to mess up where they go. vac. leaks are a pain . tom, mike and den's answers are correct also
