Where did my front diff go?

Asked by Thomas Jan 04, 2021 at 03:08 AM about the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LTZ 4WD

Question type: General

Got to looking underneath the truck when it was on the lift at the tire store and the mechanic there pointed out that it's missing the front differential.  Now, I'm no mechanic so I didn't know what that meant so he explained that basically the truck isn't a 4x4 until I get a front diff installed.  Any idea how much getting one installed costs?  Thanks in advance and please, no ribbbing or making fun.  I already feel stupid enough.

You cannot add a diff to a 2WD and get 4WD. Is the truck originally 2WD or 4WD?

You bought this used? Have your mechanic make a list of all the missing parts and the cost to install them.

The good news is these trucks are everywhere so finding good used parts should be simple. Any good shop will think of this on their own, but mentioning it, just in case.
