Oil pump or sending unit?

Asked by Mike Apr 23, 2016 at 06:11 AM about the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LTZ 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2007 Chevy Avalanche
Oil pressure dropped to zero while driving, started dinging
and check engine light is also on.  Stopped driving
immediately, engine sounds great, no noises or knocking.
Checked oil, oil is full and good.  Start the car up and oil
pressure is normal for 5 or so min, then drops down again.
Have since drove about 20 to 30 miles in short trips. Still no
odd engine noises. Just wondering what is the problem.
Truck has about 62000 Miles on it.
Chevy dealer is picking up tomorrow, just curious what
people think it is, I wanna know, before worrying for the
next couple days

Common problem. There is a basket looking screen under the Oil Pressure Sending Unit that will get gummed up. Just need to take out the Oil Pressure Sending Unit on the back of the engine, fish out the screen and clean it. Since you have gone threw the trouble of taking out the OPSU. should just replace it. When the screen gets gummed up, the gauge on the dash will read inaccurately.

Yes, probably that sending unit. The first thing that makes noise on an engine like that with low oil pressure is the lifters. But if I went to the effort to remove that sending unit to clean it, I would just put in a new one, because it is a very inexpensive part. With that sending unit removed you can also hook up a gauge to get the actual oil pressure. We spend all this money on cars, and all we get is idiot lights. There should be a law! Good luck.

Before checking the oil pressure, that screen would need to come out first, as I said, it is under the Oil Pressure Sending Unit.
