Door lock issues
Asked by Dannyj315 Dec 19, 2016 at 08:43 PM about the 2016 Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCrew 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
So today I noticed that my rear passenger door (
drivers side ) would not unlock or lock. All the other
doors unlock and lock with no issues i.e. Using key
fob, manually or the lock and unlock button on the
driver side door. I'm assuming it's an electrical
issue. Wondering if anyone else has this issue and
how to fix ?

If you don't hear the actuator, it's either dead or the wiring harness came loose. If you hear the actuator, but the door isn't locking/unlocking, one of the locking rods came off. You'll have to remove the door panel to know for sure. Usually it's a bad actuator, they're straight-forward to replace, but getting your hand into the tight confines can be tricky.
Having same probs on a 2018 but in my case it’s it’s diferent doors called ford they tryed telling me they r frozen , it’s to cold wtf really truck is going in this week , service lady was of no help
What did you find was the problem with the door lock?
Our doors lock unexpected, differences doors, different times. Dealership said cause was dirt getting in the door wells. We live on a ranch and it's real dusty. For this reason won't be buying another Ford.
started having the same issue on my 2017...first front passenger won't lock/unlock, resolved itself and 2 days latter rear door on drivers side...apparently there's a ford solution that is covered by warranty...something to do with shield …
GURUXRK2T I am having almost exact same problem as you. I have a 2015. First only drivers door would open . Then this evening the driver and passenger door work. Both rear doors nothing . I have never had this issue in previous winters . I could see the end of your post about what the issue is?
GuruBDFNL my dealer said it's a recall item, something to do with shielding, parts are on back order. Sorry, I can't offer anymore than that.
Gurubfnl thanks that's excellent . Going to call my dealership about it !
Having the same issue. Can't get the passenger rear door to unlock or open. No problem with any of the other doors.
Strangely enough the next afternoon the passenger one started working then the day after one of the rear doors then hours later the other. No idea the reason. I was reading am earlier post that said ford told them it was do to the cold. Well I live in northern Canada and have never had this problem in th past and it's not even that cold here yet. I am definitely getting a hold of ford for it. Also for the first time ever my windshield washer sprayers won't work reservoir is full you can here pump running but no fluid coming out. I already checked that the tips weren't frozen and I use -45 degrees Celcius fluid.
Seen this problem on an other post as I was searching for answers as I have the same problem on my 2014. Wiring harness is most like cause seems to be common occurrence!! Sure enough!!! Easy fix tho!!
GuruBSWBH, how did you resolve it?
So I found I had the same problem in my 2013 on the rear driver side door. The wire had broken. Since there was not enough wire to use a splice, I stripped a small section on each side of the wire and soldered them together. Then I wrapped with electrical tape. The connection is solid and the door lock works again.
Where is this connection at???
In the wiring bundle from the door frame to the door. I'll post another picture of the wiring next.
Wiring at the door jamb
I have the exact wiring issue and I went through 3 years of ignoring it before trying a new actuator just to find it was a broken wire and could be patched easily. Thank you guys!
I have a 2013 F150 the rear passenger door has locked, the lock knob is up (as if unlocked) but door will not open, so I am not sure how to even fix it.
Yes, I got mine to work also, but how the heck do you put the boot back on?
2017 f350 XLT has power door locks, but when unlocked and I try to open the drivers door, I can see the “manual” lock/unlock rod sticking through the top of the door panel Drops into the locked position. This will happen as the door is starting to open, and sometimes when you close the door harshly. It’s as if the spring that should hold the manual pull rod in place ( unlocked position) has broken or is missing?

2013 F-150 The wire broke on my rear passenger door also. I soldered it back and it lasted about a year. It just stopped again yesterday. I'll crack it open this weekend and do it again. There's just too much bending in that joint.

2013 F-150 Eco Boost with Suicide doors. Pushing the lock/unlock button passenger door lock stuck down and had to be opened manually from inside handle. Once opened worked like a charm until a few days later did the same thing. Driver side door started same thing. Got locked out with keys in hand and neither doors would unlock. Key in door didn't work either nor did the touchpad. Had to get a Slim Jim to open the passenger door and that was even hard to pull up like it was binding or something. Its 89 degrees here so cold has nothing to do with it. Once open though the keyless entry buttons, the key pad and the key in the door work great! So it's not every time. Just when it wants to. Any answers to that problem?
New question, I replaced both the actuator and then the wiring harness. Now the actuator buzzes in the door when ever you open any door and my retractable step will not retract. The door does not lock or unlock? I would appreciate any help on this issue.
Iv had this same problem on two ford trucks. I lock the doors and come back and one won’t unlock, but later it unlocks. When it does this though you can take a pair of pliers and manually pull the latch up but not with your fingers. This leads me believe it’s not electrical. Dealership was no help either. Any advice would be appreciated.
I thought the lock actuator was broken and changed it but after wards I found that it was a broken wire. it is broken at the plug and I need to find a way to fix it or replace just the plug. Auto zone only has the whole wire harness and its quit a bit.
I had the same issue in a 2010 F150...pulled door panel, plugged in new actuator but that didn’t work. Followed all of your leads and checked the wiring between the door and the frame and sure enough...2 broken wires and 3 almost broken! Soldered 2 pigtails to the broken wires then little bit of solder on the almost broken wires and everything worked. Other broken wire was to the speaker which I did t even realize wasn’t working. Had to peel the wire casing back about an inch to find the broken wires as they were not at first easily seen...at first glance all wires looked fine, but when I peeled the casing back is when I found them all.
Had the same problem with my 2011 F150, found a couple of broken wires, used aviation type splice, rewrapped harness , works, great. Rubber boot was a little tricky to reinstall.
Sounds like mine is probably the wire, my problem is the door is locked shut, any ideas on how to get it unlocked so I can get into the door panel.
I have a 2017 F150 drivers side rear door won't lock or lock unless done manually.. thanks for the heads up to what the issues maybe. Calling the dealership tomorrow.
Thanks guys this helped sadly i already tried the door actuator.
I got the same issue with my 2016 Ford F150. I've had it in for repair 4 times so far but every year since I've owned the truck the doors won't unlock as soon as the weather starts to turn cold. It's happening again right now but Ford won't cover the repair because the truck is off warranty. If it was properly fixed when it was taken back to the dealer 4 times, I wouldn't be having this same problem. The service sucks!

2017 with the same problem. I have found even after installation of a new one from Ford still had the same problem. Now he is the kicker. If i turned on the child lock door lock actuator and outside door handle works fine. Turn off the child lock all the same issues come back. Also had to adjust door striker. Waiting for another lock and actuator from ford.
I have 2010 fird f150 that drivers rear door lock quit working. I found that wires were broken. Ordered new wiring harness. Replaced it and still nothing.

Identical situation here Lester. My F150 driver side door lock pops up when I unlock using key fob, key, or code, but immediately pops back down. This only happens when the weather gets cold. Have had same problem since 2nd year of ownership and 5 visits to Ford while under warranty got no satisfaction. Now warranty is over. Also, window on same door freezes up in winter. Been wondering if it’s a condensation problem or something shorting out in winter.

My drivers door lock quit working could feel the actuator clicking lightly when I put my hand near the latch. Blew the area around the latch out with 30PSI compressed air and sprayed with tire foam. Repeated several times and kept locking and unlocking with the key fob and it started working. Happened a week after I had the broken wire problem on left rear door ajar alarm.
I have a 2015 F150 and the rear drivers side door decided that it didn't to work. I took the door apart and messed with the wires a little and I haven't had an issue since.

Ok , same -ish problem .. several months ago replaced drivers side front door lock actuator on 2005 lf150 Lariat .. heads up! mine is an August baby , and in July -Sept ...Ford were replacing swapping Actuators .. the loom connection is different ( type and orientation) .. Back to problem ,, gradually over a week or so , the drivers side lock button seemed to need a couple presses on remote to either lock or unlock .. Audible click when operating locks electrically .. then Nada .. ( driver door only , rest were fine as normal)so i took off the panel again.. fiddled around and found that the actual actuator was loose ,and hanging by a wire as it were, press the buttons on keypad and or remote .. actuator works fine .. now to get my ex-large mitts back in there again and refit/attach the actuator.. BTW found an older ipod ( yep) and a Mag/penlight in the bottom of the door ( explains the rattle now and again .. Also had this from new Dec/05.. Wondering if I can I legally punch out the dealer, and or demand explanation.. ?

Drivers door lock will not operated with FOB. I took the actuator out and plugged it into the passenger side and it worked fine. Thanks for the posts. Will check out the wiring harness, especially at the door hinge.

Same exact issue gents on my 2013 F150. After replacing the door lock actuator I realized it was the wire harness. However, I'm not having luck at disconnecting the harness? Any tips?
Throw hot water on the door wait a few and give it a go .
