Stuck in reverse
Asked by Jesusaichchrist Jan 27, 2019 at 12:54 PM about the 2016 Dodge Dart SXT FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2016 Dodge Dart SXT, automatic trans.
This morning I put the car in reverse, stopped, and moved
the shifter into park. I let off of the brake and realized that I
was still in reverse.
The shifter moves as normal through each P, R, N, D+-. But,
the dash still shows 'R' as does the indicator on the shifter.
And reverse lights stay on. I eventually turned off the car
and now, of course, the key is stuck in the ignition. I did
some searches and only found 'broken cable' as a solution.
Has anyone else had this? If so, are there easier fixes to try
first?

Hey, did you find the cause of this? Mine is doing the exact same thing. Help!
Yes I did. The shift cable bushing broke. It's the cable that connects the shifter to the transmission. If you look below the bracket that holds the battery you will see it. I was able to reach my arm under there and reconnect it to get it into gear and drive home. You will need to buy the replacement bushing and install it or it will just keep popping off when you hit bumps on the road. Just google your model and "shift cable bushing". I got mine from bushingfix.com
Hey you all need to call because the say it's a recall on this.
My car just did exactly the same thing. I put the car in park still had my foot on the brake and it thru itself into reverse. I tried moving the gear but nothing and now the key won't come out of the ignition.
@GuruLKR1H. Thank you so much for the informative info. I left on my lunchbreak and went to pick up a package. I came back and put the keyfob, turned the key and immediately put the car in drive and nothing... I looked down and realized car was showing in Reverse even though the gear was not. Reverse lights on the back of the car was on and I couldnt remove the key fob... As i waited I googled and came up on this discussion and read thru it and was happy I read your responses. The tow truck came and I reas him your response and he immediately popped the hood and put it back in place and we towed the car to Dodge dealership and confiremd it is a recall for this issue. Thanks so much!
Thanks also to GuruLXJ3K6. Very informative.... really helped me when I was stuck with this issue.

I have a 2014, push to start, all my indicators say it's in park, but it wont cut off and says "vehicle not in park." Its in park on my shifter labels, as well as my dash. The only way we've gotten it to cut off is by putting it back I'm drive and then back in park. Sometimes that wont work, so we put on the emergency brake. Sometimes that works, sometimes not. We have to really play around with the car to get it to cut off.
Guru, Check and see if your shifter knob is broke. Mine broke and it no longer catches the white plastic shift that tells the car its in park... Super annoying.
Basically have to lift my shift knob up, pull up the plastic piece that pulls the cable. Then hit the push button start while holding up the white plastic part.
