1969 Volkswagen beetle 1st & 2nd gear problems

1969 volkswagon beetle 1st gear grinds a
lot but will go in it one out of four times to
try & 2nd gear won't go in it at all... I have
put a new shift rod bushing on it. the 3rd &
4th & rev are all good

How do you know what type of transaxle transmission is in your vw beetle my beetle is a 1969 year. I think it's a manual 4 speed. But I want clarification I don't won't to buy the wrong one...
