What is the cause for a high pitched squeeking when air conditionair/heater runs but stops when I turn it off.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I turn on the air conditioner/heater, it makes a very high pitched squeak.  When I turn it off, it typically stops.  Sometimes the squeak will happen now without the conditioner/heater on.  Typically starts when the car is in a stopped position (like at a light or stopping) and then the gas peddle is pushed and the car accelerates.

Sounds like the serpentine belt squealing, especially when the A/C is on and even with it off, the A/C compressor engages on defrost. Now when it still does it with A/C off, the clutch on the A/C may be dragging , not completely dis-engaging
