My 2016 just went out too ! staking it to the dealer tomorrow
the car should still be under warranty. if not, it is most likely a freon issue, low or out. if it's not under warranty DON'T stay at the dealer to get it fixed. They will be HORRIBLY expensive. take it to a shop in town who knows imports!!
The helpful guys at Honda said because it was out of warranty and mileage 56,000 they would split the cost of a new compressor!
NO!! Call America Honda! They are aware of the problem. Many of the compressors had issues so they are fixing them. If your VIN is not one of them, they can still fix it as a GOODWILL gesture at your local dealership!! I'm going through that right now. I only have 40k on mine and mine just started blowing hot air. That's ridiculous. I'm out of warranty by 4k miles!!
My 2016 Honda Civic has same air conditioner problem. My odometer is very low only 11000 since I bought in Jan 2016. Last year I was under warranty dealer help to fix the problem. This year same problem happen again. It really frustrated. The outside temperature even lower then inside. What I just fixed even within 2 months.
My 2016 Honda Civic also has the same air conditioner problem. Honda America will not do anything about the problem even though it is a known issue. Even when people have the problem fixed it reoccurs again in a year. Honda really screwed up on this and will lose many faithful customers. Once i get mine fixed i will be selling my civic and never get a Honda again.
I have a 2017 Honda Civic and a/c stopped working recently. It's under warranty, has 28K miles, but the dealer says "road damage" caused compressor damage and that's not covered. He went on to say that it is a known issue with 2016-2017 Hondas and the part is on NATION-WIDE back order (2-3 weeks) but there hasn't been a recall issued. I don't know much about cars but know that if this "road damage" is happening to many Honda owners then something is wrong with the design and it should be RECALLED by Honda. The dealership wants $1300 to fix it but there's no guarantee it won't get "road damage" again and I'm stuck with the bill. Anybody had luck contacting Honda corporate??
i jave a 2016 touring civic with only 8,000mi. yesterday my commpressor went out & parts not avail. for maybe months! DO A RECALL,!!
own a 2016 Honda Civic ex, right close to 30,000 miles the air conditioning started blowing hot , and Honda knew about the issue with the cars coming out of the factory, why are not being recalled. The dealership wants $ 2150 to fix it but there's no parts available until mid of august 2019.
I had the same issue. Bought a 2017 Honda Civic and after 6 months it started having problems with the AC, took it to the dealer and they told me it was low from factory. Fast forward to the next summer, warranty has expired and the car started having issues again. Took it to the dealership after calling the service manager and Honda corporate and requested that they would fix the vehicle with no cost to me as it was obviously not properly fixed the first time. They accepted and now they are getting it fixed as if it was under warranty. They also told me that it’s a NationWide know issue and they have kept my car for about 3 weeks so far. I did requested a loaner. I called today and they still have no clue when the part would come in. I hope Honda Recalls this vehicles or they will be getting sued.
My mom has a 2016 Honda Civic (13,000 miles) and AC is broken. Dealer found a leak and put dye in yesterday to determine if there are more leaks. Car goes back to dealer this Friday. After spending 2+ hours on the phone with Honda America yesterday, they were of no assistance and said someone else will contact next week. Although we learned that Honda issued a 10 year warranty extension as of yesterday for AC compressor due to multiple problems, including leaks, Honda is still making it difficult for their customers to get this product defect resolved in an expeditious manner and customers must pay out of pocket with the HOPE of receiving some type of reimbursement. Honda doesn’t care and it is clear after speaking with multiple representatives including multi-level supervisors...bottom line, don’t buy a Honda.
Was it a Freon leak? And did they make you pay for the Freon prior to advising of the leaks?
Took my 2016 coupe into the dealer and they told me that my car had no Freon and that they only way they would repair it is if they did a leak test. But they needed to do the dye test and couldn’t do so until I paid $351 for the Freon.
My wife's car is having the same problem. The car has 29000 miles but It did pass the 3 years. I took the car to a independent ac shop. The guy at the shop told us that the car has major leaks on the compressor, condenser and evaporator. We got a quote to fix everything for $2800 but he recommends taking the car to Honda and having them fix it. He said a lot of Honda civic have been coming to his shop with same problem. We drop the car at Honda dealership on Saturday they will diagnose the problem and let us know. We are so frustrated with this issue. We have 2 little kids that travel with my wife I feel bad for them traveling in this heat.
I'm having the same issue with my 2016 Civic. I leased it for the first 3 years and THE DAY AFTER I bought out the lease, My AC stopped working going into a Texas summer. It has 41,000 miles now and I've been stubborn about fixing it to this point due to the principle of it but a constantly pissed I'm having this issue with a 3-year-old Honda. Will try calling Honda America and seeing if they having anything insightful to say.
Yeah I’m gonna call as well because I refuse to pay for it. Cars just don’t lose Freon. That’s not regular wear and tear. Also the problem is- Honda is telling us they’re extending the warranty and it’s no cost for repair, but the mechanics at the dealership are not wanting to “work for free” so they’re finding every reason other than what’s covered under the warranty.
Honda called me yesterday to inform me that they now have a recall for the civic ac issue. But parts will not be available until mid September.
Mid September?! With this Texas heat?! I can’t...but at least they called right
2016 civic a/c has a lot of problems, such as driver side is hot, even if a/c is working, it's not cold enough, just like a/c has not been installed.
I haven't received a call about the A/C recall, but am having this issue. Can anyone else confirm this has been recalled.
GEEZ. I thought i was alone on this. 45k in and mine went out as well. I tried asking honda and they wouldnt even bother to look at it, because they know its an issue. This thread was great. I got contacted by a law-firm looking to settle this in court. Check them out. Ill also be on the lookout and see if this has becomes a recall. So sad this is happening but im not going to fix it if its going to be recalled. https://www.newsom.law/honda-civic-ac-failure.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwkenqBRBgEiwA- bZVtgz7aqsPIZ04fRCkSYpsQL80BaNnxGhUQnAaXK2KVDnZYKnNdF17bRoCGH4QAvD_ BwE
Took my car into the dealership with this same ac blowing hot air issue. Asked about a recall notice after reading these boards. Was told that Honda is extending their warranty for condenser issues. I was told that the issue with my car is that the compressor is bad and it would cost $2500 to fix it.
I also have a problem with the on board screen that sometimes blacks out . Only the Honda logo appears ? I wait about 30 minut s then it resets itself ??
I also have an issue with my Honda Civic 2016 having hot air on driver side and cool air on passenger side. Have not taken it to dealer hoping there is a recall. Does anyone have any updates?
I have 2016 civic and the ac just stop working last week honda customer service told me that they have extended warranty for the condenser, i bring the car to the dealer and they said i have a leaking condenser and compressor they will only replace the condenser for free and i will pay for the compressor out of my pocket.
I just took our 2016 Honda Civic in, bc it was blowing hot air. They're telling me it will be $1,600 to repair evaporator, and condenser is under warranty. I said I wasn't going to pay that and the dealer spoke to Honda Corporate. Honda agreed to lower the price to $400, but I still think I'm being ripped off. I think it's probably just the condenser and the dealer is looking to make some $ bc otherwise they'd have to replace just the condenser for free. Anyhow, be sure to pitch a fit and refuse to pay. Maybe you can get the dealer to work something out.
And to add to this, the service guy told me that the extended warranty came out yesterday, but the parts are on backorder for 2-3 months.
I have 2018 Honda Civic, this week my ac not working,
Take it in right away to a Honda dealer. It may still be under warranty and they'll fix for free. 3 years or 36,000 miles for the evaporator, the condenser is warrantied for 10 years. When I was in the shop, they were working on another Civic, but it was all under warranty.
Yah update on mine is I took it in, had the extended warranty on the Condenser so of course, they said it's the evaporator, which with A/C recharge would come out to right around $1,800. Told them "no, I'm good" and will take it up with Corporate. They responded and mentioned they would drop it down to $400. Still trying to figure out if I should do it as when I got the car back and have been driving it for a week..... It's Ice Cold now so I don't know what the heck happened in the shop. Maybe they filled it a little to test the hole in the evaporator and this is the leftover? No clue. SO now I'm deciding if I want to fix it or not.
I went ahead and paid the $350 after accusing the shop of trying to rip me off. He showed me both the condenser and evaporator that came out of the car. Claimed the dark spots were from freon leaking, but who knows? Could have been from another car. Dig your heels in and they'll work out some sort of compromise with Honda Corporate. Like Honda pays for the parts if the shop absorbs some of the labor. I think the $350 they charged me was for labor and freon. We're buying another new car in January and it won't be a Honda.
The dealership wouldn’t pay anything for mine claiming the damage was caused by road damage. I bought a new car last week and it wasn’t a Honda.
Bought used 2018 Civic with 9,500 miles Monday. By Wednesday hot air was blowing out of driver side. Cold air passenger side.
Take it in to a Honda dealer. All parts should be under Warranty with that low mileage and only 1 year old.
I have a 2017 Honda Civic 10k miles last week the A/C stopped working, it was blowing hot air and making a funny noise. Took it Honda they stated they need to order two parts for it, both under warranty. They know something is up with the A/C in the Honda.
I have a 2016 Honda Civic EX and today marks the 4th time my a/c has stopped working. I have extended warranty. 1 time no cool air, 3 times no cool air on drivers side. Compressor has been replaced. I’m a home health nurse, It was 105 today. I am pissed. How many times does the same problem occur before it’s considered a LEMON. This is my 5th honda since 1990. This is the only one I’ve had issues with!!!!!!!!

Does anyone have any documentation of this extended warranty of the compressor and/or condenser?
It's the condenser that has the 10 year extended Warranty. My paperwork from Honda is with the car in another state (my daughter has the car at college), but I'll try to get a copy.
Hey peeps! I just called Honda cooperate customer service and told them about the issue and that I saw some people on here mentioning a 10 year extended warranty. They asked for my info and VIN, and told me that my car does have the 10 year warranty for the condenser and that I also qualify for the ac control unit to be replaced. That was good news! I just started having the hot/cold issue a week ago right at 37000 miles. Go figure.... so I recommend calling the cooperate customer service and finding out.
Also I was reading from another forum where people are putting a chicken wire like gate on the bottom part of their bumper where the condenser is located to prevent future punctures. Here’s the link https://www.civicx.com/threads/modify-condenser- intake.1164/
Bro, can you give me the phone number of Honda Corporate?
I noticed a problem with my air conditioner about a month ago but didn't have time to take it into the dealership at that point I took it in today and they're telling me that the condenser has a hole in it which was caused by a rock or rocks causing a hole or holes and that as a result the compressor is now bad and to replace both items and recharged it it will be over $1,800. I asked about the extended warranty and that I understand that there is an issue with the 2016 AC system and was adamantly told that the warranty would not apply because this was damaged not a result of poor manufacturing.
I had the same problem. Bought my used 2016 Honda Civic at end of June 2019 ... issue popped up less than a month. $41K miles. Dealership claims it worked via their "130 pt inspection" BS. Took it to Honda and was quoted nearly $300 just to diagnose - problem not even yet determined. Contacted Honda Corporate. To clarify statements made here ... yes, there is an extended warranty, and yes, it only covers non-damage leaks (both dealer where I purchased and Honda repair say no visible leaks, so I might be covered). There is no over-encompassing recall ... there are VIN specific recalls, so you're lucky if you got a call about an A/C recall.
I just a bought a 2016 Honda Civic this past March and I have the same issue. On the passenger side blows cold air and my side doesn't. I was wondering if buying R-1234yf would help temporarily? My car has 51,000 miles on it and my ac went out a few months ago. The Honda I go to is in Long Beach, Ca and their telling me to diagnose it will be over $600. And this is without the repair fees and etc. Also, they told me the part I actual need is on back order which will take 2-3 weeks. This BS!
Diana, I would almost take it to another dealer to see what they say, or tell them you want to see the hole!
If you live in Long Beach, CA....Take it to Lynns auto Air In in Downey, trust me they are BETTER than a dealer and WILL be able to look at it if you have the new AC system. To diagnose it it will be 90 bucks but he was able to get my AC back on track for the time being. Definately recommend going here first.
just an update for everyone who's on here. I spoke to a service advisor at a different dealership who ran my VIN number and confirmed that my vehicle does fall under the 10-year warranty for the condenser. He also stated that it was a manufacturing error in the part which is why they are offering the extended warranty and that it would be covered if that is the problem with the air conditioning. however at this dealership they charge $150 to diagnose the problem and if they determine the problem isn't in the condenser. And the condenser part is on a couple of months back order.
Hello everyone. I was in Myrtle Beach SC a few weeks ago with my son and elderly father with my 2016 Honda Civic and the AC was working fine and we stopped for lunch in the 90 degree heat and when we came out and I started the car ice crystals blew out of the vents and into my and my son's faces!! The AC hasn't worked since! I'm off warranty and didn't but an extended warranty because I thought I would get a couple hundred thousand miles out of my Honda. Sharp looking car and It's babied by me like all of my vehicles. Taking it to the Honda dealer tomorrow to figure out whats wrong with it but reading these posts I'm concerned. If it ends up costing me a lot, I will not get it fixed and sell it and probably buy another Toyota. Really upset and disappointed over this. Shame on Honda! Man up and recall this for your dedicated owners! Sean
Mine blew ice out, too, before it died. Take it to a Honda dealer. Condenser is under extended warranty for 10 years. Other things may be wrong, but if you pitch a fit they can work with Honda corporate to maybe give you a break.
This same problem just happened to me. I took my 2016 Honda Civic into my local Honda dealer. They knew right away about the problem with the condensers on these vehicles and did a quick test to verify that was the problem with my car. Luckily, the service person explained that Honda just recently (like a few weeks ago) recognized this problem and agreed to cover the cost of a new condenser 100%. (Today is 9/11/19) Also, lucky for me, they had one in stock. I was in and out in 2 hours.
I just got off the phone with American Honda and am being told it won't be covered because the dealership said it was due to road damage, even though the design of the vehicle leaves it open to damage.
The service bulletin or the faulty condenser repair and 10 yr warranty is service bulletin 19-091. My ac leaked all the freon out due to a faulty condenser and I was over the mileage warranty. It was just repaired under this service bulletin. Mine is a 2018 Civic EX with the 2.0 engine. The service bulletin warranty covers certain VIN # Honda Civics in which the condenser was not manufactured to Honda's specs and little holes develop that leak the freon out. It does not cover road hazard damage to a condenser. The way you can tell if you have road damage that won't be covered is by looking at the 'piping' that run horizontal across the condenser. Not the fins that run vertical and frequently get bent from the wind and bugs or little pebbles. If the horizontal piping that runs across the condenser left to right every half inch or so is broken then it doesn't qualify. On the other hand if the horizontal piping is undamaged and you just have bent fins then it will qualify for the repair as long as it is a covered VIN #. Mine qualified and now has the 10 yr warranty on the condenser.
I took my car to an independent mechanic who said that the leak in the condenser is absolutely not caused by road damage. He also told me that the compressor seal blew and this has been happening with many of the Honda civics so much that there are back orders on the compressors and no one seems to know when they'll get in. He suspects that the compressor seals are blowing because of the 1234 freon that they're using now and that the compressors were formulated for the older freon. however the American Honda rep is telling me that they're standing by the original dealerships diagnosis and I am unable to take it up the corporate ladder. I am appalled that a corporation would act in this manner. Let alone a local dealership.
I was able to get my condenser repaired today (9/19/19) as well under this new service bulletin. I have a 2016 Honda Civic Ex with ~60k miles on it. I'm not confident on the date that the bulletin was released however, 4 weeks ago the dealership in my hometown was sticking to the out of warranty claim and charging $350 just for the diagnostic!!! With a question mark price tag following the actual diagnostic. I'm really glad I quoted it out at more than one dealership. Turns out the dealership I purchased the car from who only quoted me $130 for the diagnostic is going to fully repair my condenser. I'm not positive yet if that means I still owe the $130 for the diagnostic or not. I get my car back tomorrow, but $130 for a fully fixed car compared to the question mark price tag from the other dealership seems like a great deal to me. Hoping my story can help some fellow Honda Owners, call around not all dealerships are equal sadly.
2016 Honda Civic here. I put 106k miles on it, it's been blowing increasingly hot hair for a couple months, finally had time to bring it in. My regular mechanic won't work on this system, it's too new and they haven't bought whatever they need to diagnose it-- said it's too expensive. My local dealer had no appointment for 2 weeks. Took it to another dealer, they diagnosed a leaking compressor, and the leak damage the coil and the clutch. Called American Honda, they won't do anything about it-- their extended warranty campaign is for the condenser, not the compressor. Either way, they said they wouldn't cover the other damage to the car caused by the leak, the warranty only covers the part itself. That dealership says the part is on backorder, but American Honda said "it's so strange they'd say that, you should contact other local dealers." Repairs are ~$3000 is my initial quote from the dealer. Like hell I'm going to give anyone at Honda more money over this. I'm calling around until I find someone else who works on these A/Cs and I don't care if it's $1000 more than Honda is charging, I'm not giving them more profit to fix their own bullshit.
That's exactly my situation. Honda Civic ex-t 60k My dealer want to charge me 360,00 only to diagnostic. Another dealer 450,00 dolares Called Honda of America to see if they can help with this situation.
Hey everyone, I have some advice for you. My 2016 Civic (LX 4 dr CVT) was blowing warm air – warmest from left to right (driver side to passenger side). The passenger side was still cool, but the driver side vent was warm. This indicated that the refrigerant was low. Why? Because there was a leak. I brought my car into a Honda dealer and they refilled the refrigerant and add UV dye so that the leak can be seen after a week or so of driving. I had to pay for this – almost $600 because the refrigerant used in this car is new and expensive. The job took about 3 hours I think. Once the leak was discovered from the AC Compressor (NOT condenser), I was given a quote for $2122 for a new compressor, clutch set, etc, including a new recharge of refrigerant. I did the online chat with American Honda and explained to them my situation. They had me upload documentation from the dealer for the repair job/quote. Then I got a call from them and they asked me to explain my issue. I told them how I was a loyal Honda owner for almost 20 years and that it'd be nice if they could help me out. They said they can't promise anything, but that they'd call the dealership I visited to see what they could do. I got a call from my dealership and they said that American Honda is offering the repair complimentary with a $250 deductible as a goodwill gesture. I got the repair done yesterday and only paid $250. They did have to place an order for the compressor and I waited about a week. Hope this helps you guys. Just be courteous when you're talking to American Honda and hopefully you get someone who can help you out.

I have a 2017 Civic and the first summer I had it (2018) the AC was very very weak. Not that cold. I just thought Honda's AC sucked or wasn't powerful (this is my first non GM vehicle). This past summer it really sucked. It started blowing HOT air. I had a passenger confirm it was even hotter than outside air in the peak of summer! I brought it in to the dealership because I am now 2 years in and I still have under 10K miles on it. Full warranty. The service guy said that it's a known issue but I will have to sign something stating it MAY cost me $500 just to get it diagnosed. If it isn't road damage and is covered I won't have to pay but if It is road damage the diagnostic process (which included evacuating the whole system and refilling it just to diagnose it) will be my cost PLUS the cost of the repair which could be over $1000. I also have to make a special apt for the AC tech because he is backed up with all the ac problems. He also said the new Freon they are using isn't compatible with the systems in the cars they are selling so it's causing a lot of problems. Sounds like BS to me. When they start giving me the "maybe" 'might be road damage"" sign waiver" stuff I know I am being set up for a ride. This is exactly why I took automotive and fix my own car all the time. I started researching and found out many times it is just a faulty relay in the fuse box. I tried tapping it and now it's blowing cold but I think it's because it is cold out not and not that it's fixed. I'm still researching but I NEVER TRUST A DEALERSHIP EVER. Not with the runaround I got especially with a known issue. Anyone tryreplacing or tapping on the AC relay in the fuse box?? I'm not paying not 500. I'm not paying a cent for a car that never had good AC from the start! This car had 2.5 miles on it when I bought it and I take care of my things. Honda needs to step up and take care of this problem. I got like no miles on it and still haven't even had my 2nd oil change yet. Come on! By the way. The capless gas system gets install a cup on the inside if the cover to protect the gas system. Mine froze on me and I couldn't refill my tank! I put up a huge stink and corporate made the new part to fix the issue. I don't think they are recalling that either just waiting for diligent people like me to notice there is WATER getting into the FUEL SYSTEM. Serious damage to the engine if that continues. Be diligent peeps!! Any advice on my AC problem would be welcome. I'll roll my windows down if I have to but I am not paying a cent for their failures. NOT A CENT!
kweenofrocknroll answered 5 years ago
*** by the way... The capless gas system gets rainwater up inside the reservoir under the capless gas flap. It's not a speck or a tiny bit it's a small reservoir that holds almost an ounce of water. You have to get the dealership to install a cup-like attachment on the inside if the gas door to protect the gas system. It was happening on Civic and Cr-v's they said. I am sure it is more but people aren't that good at attention to detail. I wonder how many engine failures the water getting into the gas system is going to cause. we can wait and see...
This is my 7th Honda and the only one that's been a total lemon!! I HATE this car so much!!! 3 yrs old and this is the 2nd time my AC has gone out. The first time it was just out of warranty, but Honda made me a "deal" and covered part of the cost for a compressor. The AC just went out again today and I refuse to put more money into this POS car. I had no idea that so many people have been having these same problems. Honda should have recalled this car or recalled the AC system and replaced them all.
Hi all, GOOD NEWS! HONDA IS FIXING THE DEFECTIVE AC FOR FREE! My 2016 Honda Civic has the AC problem and my car is out of warranty I took it to the dealership, spent ~$150 to get it diagnosed and quoted $2K to fix it. A couple months ago I called the Honda Corporate. I told them about the problem and I told them I got the diagnostic, and they gave me a case number. Last night, I came home and I found a letter in the mail from Honda Corp., saying that they'll fix the problem for FREE, extending the condenser warranty to 10 years. (here is the letter: https://i.redd.it/y1mf57k820x31.png) Also, they are refunding my diagnostic fee.
AndyHonda16 answered 4 years ago
GuruNR5K7 -> I got this letter too. I have a 2016 Honda Civic. I had the problem with the condenser in 2017, just 20k miles. I was under warranty but they said it was a rock that hit the condenser and the warranty did not apply for it. I spent $900 to replace the condenser. Im pretty sure the problem was not the rock, but that what is in the record. Not sure if I can get reimburse on this but I will try. If doesnt work I will never buy a Honda again.
I have Honda Civic 2017 and same problem.I took it to dealership twice and they fix it.Third time they told me condenser has a small whole and need to be replaced. They blame it to some object hitting it.They charged me over 600 dollars.I received a letter other day from Honda that it is factory problem.I will see if I can get my money refunded.
Hi all, just wanted to give a little information in regards to this. I have a 2016 Honda Civic EX this past summer my AC system wasn't working properly. There was hot air coming out on the driver's side and cold air on the passenger side. Took it to the dealership where I purchased the car they kept it for 6 hours. They then called me to pick up the car and said they found nothing wrong with my AC system. Funny I thought. I then took it to another local dealership. They explained to me that the previous dealership was full of lies and they easily found a huge leak in the compressor main shaft. The compressor was on back order but they said they would replace the compressor for free since I was under warranty. They replaced the compressor for me but they still charged me to refill the freon and for the labor. Early November I got a notice stating that Honda America would reimburse me for AC condenser. I submitted my paperwork and explained that the compressor was replaced but this was clearly a caused issue due to their SHITTY MALFUNCTIONING CONDENSER. The case manager for my case stated they will not reimburse for the freon or labor costs. Pretty shitty of them as the freon nor labor should have happened especially on a car that isn't even over three years old. If HONDA would just make decent effing cars this wouldn't be the case. My girlfriend's 2016 Honda Accord also had soooo many issues, I'm talking LEMON, case. Luckily that vehicle was leased and it's no longer OUR problem. She jumped over to a 2019 Toyota. Honestly for my next car I can strongly say I'll never pick a Honda again. Question, has anyone had other issues with their Honda Civic's since as blacked out screen while driving? Also being locked out of your car? When I open the truck using keyless entry (in my pocket) somehow the car goes transformer status on me and locks me out of my own car. I'm unable to gain access via the keyless remote and have to use the manual key. (Yes my key has new battery, that is not the issue).
I got the warranty extension letter for my 2017 Civic. The AC failed about two months ago. I noticed it, but it's fall so it wasn't that urgent. Then I got the letter and took it to the dealer. He said they would have to do a check to determine if it was covered. If it wasn't, it would cost me $450. I left without getting it looked at. Pretty lame. I am also inclined to stay away from Honda.
My 2017 Honda Civic Ex’s A/C failed about a year and 15,000 miles in to the lease. I went in to have them fix it and the dealer said that since it was under warranty they would be nice and ONLY charge me $350 to diagnose it. I refused and had to suffer the LA heat.. and now I got a recall letter and went back, they said now I need to pay $600 to diagnose since it’s out of warranty.. according to them.. and said as a gesture of goodwill would bring price of diagnose to, you guessed it, $350.. ... I walked away. When lease is up I’m getting a different vehicle, maybe Toyota. I hate the “Hell-full Honda people” and yeah that’s not a typo..
My car started blowing hot air since last year. I came to Honda Dealer to get fixed but they said the diagnosis fee is $295 and I refused to do it. Today I went to the dealership because I got the recalled letter about the condenser. They said if there is sth wrong is the condenser then I won’t need to pay, but if it is not, then I need to pay $395 for the diagnosis. After 6 hours, they called me back and told me that there is nothing wrong w my condenser and it is about my compressor. And the repair for that is over $1200. If I don’t want to fix it, I still need to pay $395 for the diagnosis which is stupid. This is my first Honda car and I regret that I chose Honda. I never buy Honda again. Only have the car for almost 4 years and everything is broken already.
I think all of us need to file a claim about this issue
Hi, I have the same problem with AC on my Civic 2016 LX, and got the recalled letter. Last week I brought my car to Honda dealer and had a diagnosis and they found the compressor leaking. Today, they checked AC system again and found "the compressor front seal leaking and internal failure" and recommended replacing the system. So then I was given a quote for over $5,000!!! I don't know much about car repair things, but I know it is too much. I should ask other local shops or talk with American Honda.
In the exact same situation as others here. AC blowing hot air. Saw about the condensor warranty, took it to Honda, they say the compressor front seal is the problem, and say they need to replace the compressor, condensor and part of the clutch assembly. Condensor will be covered, but the rest will be around $1900 (1150 for parts, 750 for labor). Absolutely ridiculous on a 3.5 year old car with 42000 miles. Just bought it off lease 6 months ago. Did so because Honda has a great reputation for reliability, but so much for that. Any other people have any techniques for getting this addressed?
A bunch of you who recently have posted have clearly not read the previous posts. Check out my post above (look for my username) to see how I got the compressor repair done for free with a small deductible. Do your due diligence.
The same f problem with my 2016 civic. It's weird, for a car that's almost new, that the AC doesn't work. It's weird that the condenser is covered (being the cheapest part) while the compressor is not covered. We all have the same problem, we should do something about this.
My 2016 civic ex-t same AC hot , bring in dealer 1 time pay over $300 now not cool and bring 2 times they said ac compressor and AC condenser leaking , but AC condenser leaking replace over $1500
My friend has this issue and our local Honda dealer initially wanted her to pay 1800 for labor to replace the broken condenser and compressor. And now they've come down to 800 plus. That's still a sham for Honda to make customers pay for repairs to their defective ACs.
I recommend everyone having AC issues with their 2016 Civics to post on Honda's FB site. Hopefully this will bring public awareness this Honda's integrity issues and failure to stand behind their products.
And also on google.com or yelp.com on the dealer websites. Hopefully social media can be used positively to get Honda to do the right and honorable thing to fix their defective cars.
There's also a law firm looking into this. https://bergermontague.com/cases/honda-civic-ac-lawsuit/
If anyone has this issue resolved by Honda which is the dealer replacing condenser, compressor and all related parts for free, could you please post the Honda USA contact to share with other users here. Thank you!
After 6 months mine went out. 2 weeks later had to take back because it had another leak. Not 2 years in and again my car is back at shop only to be told part is on backorder and no clue when it will be available. It's winter and after 20 mins running my heater lets out a smell and makes my throat itch. Guess that means I'll have no ac in summer. Lucky I still have warranty. Problem is this part will get fixed and go out again.
Bought the 2016 Civic the year it came out and as of July 2019 the AC will not blow cold air. Took it in to the dealership today and was told both the compressor and condenser were leaking, not due to road damage. I asked to see the parts and was told that they were not removed during diagnostics. I was told the condenser was covered under the extended warranty but to replace the compressor would be $1900. Politely told them to eff off, they contacted a district manager and offered $1000 for the repair. As suggested above, I called Honda Corporate and they basically said the warranty is only for the condenser and they could not beat the $1000 repair charge. Any tips for lowering the repair more?
I have a Honda civic 2016 same issue. AC will not blow cold air. The told me it's out of warranty and I have to pay 2300. HELP! Any suggestions?
I found this https://bergermontague.com/cases/honda-civic-ac-lawsuit/ Looks like it's a big issue and they are sue Honda. THey need to do something about this a recall maybe. It is expensive to fix!
The condenser is under warranty for TEN YEARS now because Honda is finally admitting there is a problem. My compressor went out first----and I think this may be covered now, too, as everyone seems to have problems with it as well. Then my condenser went out and Honda replaced it for free----and then I got the warranty extension notice in the mail. You should have received one, too. This car is such a lemon----it shouldn't even carry the Honda name.
I have a Honda civic 2016 in 2018 I complained about the ac and the fact that is was blowing hot weather. 2018 they put freon. 2019 the same Honda of Santa Monica said it's my condenser. I have the same issue this year and after paying 160$ for diagnosing fee they said that I need to change my evaporator and it is going to cost me 2300$ and I won't have a car for a couple of days. They told me that I am out of warranty and I have to pay out of my pocket! After 3 years of going to the same dealership for the same issue and they didn't diagnose it right now I have to pay myself!!!! I am pretty sure this was an issue with the car since I bought the car brand new. I had 2 honda's before this and never saw an issue like this. Can someone help me on how to pursue this?
I've had the same issue as most of you have. I have a 2016 Honda Civic EX. I received a letter from Honda that the condenser may be bad. In order to know if it is the condenser, they have to run a diagnostic test which is $300!! Because this was an issue ever since I bought the car in 2016, I assumed this was the problem. Alas, the problem would be fixed...not so much. They said the problem was a leaking ac compressor and condenser. How convenient for Honda!! They told me they could repair it for $1600!! On top of that I had to pay the diagnostic because it wasn't the condenser. Really!?! You made a shitty car and I have to pay for a manufacturer issue. I'm making it my mission to make everyone aware of this issue. Report it to the DOT. Below is the link to report your issue. Make it known to other consumers so they won't be stuck with a Lemon. I have to sit in a hot car with my baby because of this crappy car. Honda should not be getting away with this. Never in my life will I EVER buy a Honda again!! Toyota here I come!!! At least they stand by their product!! https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2016/HONDA/CIVIC
I have the exact same problem @GuruRWC35
Am having the exact same issue, 2016 Honda Civic blowing hot air right after warranty expires and I bought off lease (3 years), same dance, called Honda to find out there was an extended warranty, paid the $150 for the eval, they said condensor did need replacing under warranty, but also needed to replace compressor and front seal for near $2000. Ridiculous, on a 3 year old car through no fault of my own, especially when Honda admits partial fault. Have filled out the NHTSA complaint form in this thread and contacted the lawyers who are organizing a class action lawsuit. Interested to hear anyone else who has found any other ways to navigate this.
Is there somehow a quick temprary fix we can do? Like refilling freon just to get through the summer heat? Please any suggestions or videos out there of refilling freon ourselves, if it can be done...?
Did anyone report it to the EPA? This is not good for the environment. Honda should recall.
You are absolutely right--horrible to release Freon into the atmosphere, especially knowingly. But do you really think that this EPA is going to side with our health over a corporation? This EPA is doing all they can to destroy our air and water. Best thing is to try to get it handled ASAP and then go to Honda Corporate for reimbursement. I got a letter from them and submitted my expenses. Hopefully will get some money back.
F#$K Honda. I will never buy another Honda again. I too have a 2016 Civic EXL. My A/C went out last March 2019 and it just went out again 1 week ago. I took it back to the dealer (first time cost me $700, blaming it on a "O" ring) now they are telling me that the seal went out on the compressor. Now they want to charge me $1,500 ($670 compressor, $150 freon, $555 labor) . My service contact even told me that have seen lots of these cars come in for the same issue, but his hands are tied if corporate wont issue a "warranty extension on the compressor. I called Honda corporate (absolutely no help) they keep telling me that they only cover work on the condenser. I spoke to two different people, regular customer service and the recall department. They are trying to say its 44k miles out of warranty so they will not honor it. I am contacting my local news department and telling everyone I know not to buy a Honda.
@Guru26DN6 I'm glad you are contacting your local news. I got the same exact story about the compressor. Called corporate which was pointless. I won't ever get another Honda either. I think i'm just going to trade it in for a Toyota. It's pointless to get something fixed if it's going to keep on breaking. They make a shitty car and they know it. Maybe they are just waiting for someone to die of a heat stroke in their shitty car before they do something about it.
Just became the latest victim of this 2016 Honda Civic A/C fiasco . Noted the same problem yesterday when I felt warm air blowing on my 2016 Civic EX w/ only 33K miles on it. Stopped by Honda dealership today for a check and told me that I have to leave the car for a day for basic diagnostic testing which will cost me $150.00 plus whatever is broken who knows what. We'll see what they say when I'll drop the car for my scheduled appointment in a couple of days. Hopefully will be a positive outcome.
I can tell you that Honda will not fix it even if you are under warranty. They claim that it was caused by you or a rock the size of a pinhole somehow flew into the grill and and damaging the condenser in the process. I asked the girl who was my rep where exactly is the condenser located so I may see for myself if that was the caused. She told me it was located close to the grill. I didn’t accept that as the answer so I googled “how to replace broken condenser in 2018 Honda Civic” and to my surprise there are so many layers that had to be removed (which included removing the grill) just to get to the condenser. To fix it I would have to come out of pocket for $900-$1000. But because I don’t have the funds right now I could potentially be causing more damage to the Engine. A refrigerant leak in a vehicle’s AC system can damage other expensive components within the system and death. I am now noticing that my car is not picking up speed quickly. I almost got rear ended entering the freeway because I couldn’t gain speed to flow with traffic. There Is a class action lawsuit on this right now.
I bought my 2016 Civic used from a dealer and within 3 months the AC was having problems. I took it to a dealer near my home and was quoted $1800 to replace the compressor and recharge the system. That number seemed insane to me for a car I had just purchased. I called the dealer I purchased it from and they agreed to run diagnostics for me since I had just purchased the car. They could not find the leak, but they could tell one was there. They refilled the system with dye and refrigerant and I went on my way. Now summer is approaching and the AC is out of refrigerant again. I looked at the condenser there is most definitely a leak. I called the Honda dealer near my house again and mentioned that I can see a leak on the condenser, so I don't understand why I was quoted for a compressor. They looked at it again for me and showed me that the compressor is leaking. They refuse to even look at the condenser until the compressor is fixed. This entire process is absolutely insane for a car that is 3ish years old. I don't think I will ever buy another Honda. They way that the dealers and the corporation has treated this entire incident is preposterous.
I'm also having the same problem with the compressor 2016 honda civic , its not right they wont cover the compressor !!! since everyone is having so many problems, Honda do the RIGHT thing
(Update) 2 weeks ago I was told the compressor ($1,500) needed to be replaced by my local Honda dealership, I did not get the repairs done by them because at this point I don't trust them. I took it to another Honda dealership that had better yelp reviews (should of done this initially) and they could not believe what I was told by the first dealership about not finding the leak. Also they were astonished that I paid close to $700 11 months before to get the system diagnosed, he told me it should have only been around $200 or so. His statement " It is a closed system and if they did their due diligence they should have found the leak." The new dealership did another diagnosis and now I am told my A/C has experienced "Black Death" and the whole system is now shot because the compressor pushed metal shavings throughout. Now I am looking at about 6k to fix the system from the new dealership. I took it back to the original dealership and they are giving me an estimate of 5k. As it turns out the service advisor who quoted me $1,500 is no longer there. I want to be done with this car and I cant see paying 5k for a car that is only worth 10k. My non-Honda mechanic cant fix it because he does not have the equipment to work on the new A/C closed system Honda is using. I am beyond mad and frustrated with Honda, never again.
I purchased a 2016 Civic EXP with 22k miles last week. Got it home and realized it was blowing warm air. Called back the same day and they had me bring it in to be fixed at no cost to me thank god. It's there now, but what if I hadn't tested the AC till months later, then they could have called it "road damage" on my part? After reading everyone's remarks, now im nervous this will continue to be a reoccuring issue. This is my 3rd Honda Civic- my last one i sold the other day that i had for 12 years with no huge malfunctions. I love Honda but this is making me question their "brand" now.. disappointing.

I love Honda but this is making me question their "brand" now.. disappointing. *update since 5 min ago when I was typing lol, but they called back and its a leak in the condenser which is under the 10 year extended warranty. I expressed concerns, and he told me he would be very shocked if I had ANY more issues with the AC. So we will see
The AC on my 2016 Honda Civic which only has 18,000 miles just went out. The local dealership charged me $1,710 to fix saying it was the "compressor" and not the "condenser" which they acknowledge has a problem. I had a feeling they would find a way NOT to cover it. I have filed a claim and am waiting for a response. Really disappointed and have lost faith in Honda. I will take further action if they do not do the right thing and cover this known problem with the AC. A compressor should not go out at 18,000 miles!
Adding to this list, I have a 2016 Honda Civic LX with 63k miles. My warranty is way past the 36,0000 3 year warranty, but like many others have mentioned this should not be happening on a 3 1/2 year old car. Being that this is my first Honda, coming from Toyota, and knowing that Honda "had" a reputation of being reliable, this has certainly left me with serious doubts. I have received the letter in the mail about the condenser being defective, I took it to Honda this weekend and they mentioned that it was not the condenser and it would be $160 to diagnose. From all the horror stories above and the cost people are posting I doubt it is even worth it. This is ridiculous to say the least and I will be adding myself to the link above for the possible class action lawsuit as this is completely unacceptable.
Update: So I went ahead and paid the $1,710 bill for the ac compressor in my 2016 Civic with only 18,000 miles and filed a claim with Honda America as the local Honda dealership advised me to do. Honda Americas response was that they couldn't do anything now because I had gotten the car repaired. What a racket! I did exactly what they told me to do and they said because I did what they said to do, they couldn't help me. I pray someone starts a class action lawsuit. Not only is this a known defect, the dealership and manufacturer are in cahoots to ensure they never have to warrant the product. This should be illegal!
Please see attached. I got a letter from Honda saying to submit expenses related to condenser issues. I did and recently received a check for all of it. Give it a try!
For questions contact number in photo
Thanks, but they said mine was the "compressor" and not the "condenser". They are fixing condenser issues, but not compressors even though this seems to be a problem too. AC compressors should not go out at 18,000 miles and cost $1,700 to fix. Will never purchase a Honda again ever!
Well, the dealer had repaired my condenser for free under the extended warranty but charged me for fixing the evaporator. Honda ended up reimbursing me for what I paid to fix the evaporator, so it may be with a try!
GuruFN2VK that was my biggest mistake as well, coming from Toyota to this trash ass Honda in which the AC hasn't worked from the beginning. I complained about it from the beginning and because they couldn't replicate the issue, they couldn't fix it. When I got the letter about the condesor I thought that was the issue. I ended up fishing out $150 for diagnostics, all for nothing. They ended up telling me it was the comoressor. They are not trying to take any responsibility with this garbage of a car they made. When I'm able to make payments again, I'm getting rid of this trash ass car and going back to Toyota. They are ridiculous making people pay for this compressor that is obviously faulty!!
The best we can do is tell everyone we know NOT to buy a Honda. For them to tell me that they are not covering it because the car is "so out of warranty" is BS. I have had this car for 3.5 years and of that time I have only ran the A/C 3 months max per year of that (2 hrs per day) maybe 6 days per week max. I do not know why it matters how many miles I have on the car if I am not running the A/C the whole time.
Three months ago (January 2020) I bought a pre-owned 2016 Honda Civic Sedan EX at a local Honda Center. It was a winter time so I never used A/C! And now (late April 2020) it's hot in CA, I found out my A/C doesn't work, just like for all of you, driver's side has almost hot air, passenger side is a little bit cool. I am angry and devastated! I need to get that Warranty Extension: A/C Condenser Leaking, hope I can get it even I am a second owner.
I would like to update here as I had the same issue that others are describing. There was no cold air coming out of my vents when the A/C was on. I took it to a Honda Service Center and they told me the compressor was leaking and would need to be replaced. They quoted me at $2,100. Since my car is only 4 years old with 27k miles I thought this was ridiculous. I called Honda America and they told me sorry but they couldn't help. Well thankfully the guy at the Honda Service Center agreed that 27k miles was really low for a problem like this and he contacted Honda on my behalf. They agreed to pay 90% of the cost. Not perfect, but I can manage with a $200 bill. Anyways, hope this helps someone.
I just called American Honda and went around in circles with the guy on the other end of the phone. They are not owning up to the fact that there might be an issue with the compressor as well. He kept saying that "they" (the dealers) are the experts and what they find during the diagnostics are valid as they are the experts. Can't tell you how many times he said the word "experts" during the call. He reiterated that the extended warranty was for the condenser only. It was like he had a script he was reading from. After realizing I was getting nowhere, I will now pursue the issue elsewhere. I told my dealer yesterday just to fix the condenser for now. Their quote started at $1800 for the compressor, clutch, coil, went down to $1690, then started talking after market parts, then put me on hold to talk to the mechanic and came back with $1350. It's like 'Let's Make a Deal'. This is my first Honda and may be my last. I'm all in for a class action. I may try having my dealer contact Honda. Thanks for that suggestion.
I helped a friend negotiate with Honda dealer in Sacramento to get the total replacement costs down to 800 plus. Ther service manager worked with the regional rep. I still think this is a ripoff as my friends car also had 16000 miles in 3 years. Keep in mind that there is a pending lawsuit against Honda so keep your receipts. I spoke with the attorney handling the lawsuit and it may take a few years.
I also am having an issue with the AC Compressor in my 2017 Civic Hatchback. Dealer quoted about $1800 then said they would contact district manager. First he said district covered it 100%, then called back and said he misread and it was only 75% as a "goodwill gesture" and I would owe $350. After reading through this thread I figured this is the best deal I will get in a timely manner so they are repairing it right now. When I asked about if the condenser also needed replacing, he said they can't do it unless it's already broken (and claims they checked but started calling me after only 40 minutes) but that he's seen plenty of these cars come back multiple times for AC issues. I am keeping my receipts and joining a class action suit. This is my first and last honda.
Everybody should claim a case to American Honda customer service (1800 999 1009). I did it yesterday, we don't have any other way. We shouldn't pay for compressor, it's ridiculous, I've always had a Honda car but I've never had this problem.
I tried the route to open a claim at (800 999 1009) and the person on the other end kept reading from their script saying "we only cover items under the 36k......" It's as if it didn't matter what i said i was talking to a robot. They would not open a claim and told me to have the dealership call their local rep. i just spoke to my dealership and they "no that's not how it works, you need to open a claim and we will take it from there." i just want to be done with this. Has anyone been able to get a hold of anyone regarding the class action lawsuit?

My A/C went out but I didn’t notice, being in Canada but I will wait for recall then sell my 2016 civic. I had a 2004 civic and loved that car and traded it in and bought this 2016. This may be the end of the line for this brand.
I wanted to share my positive experience from this frustrating, ridiculous, shameful issue. My dealer had confirmed it was the condenser (diagnostic would have been $250 if it was something else), but found problems with the compressor (at $1350-$1800 out-of-pocket cost to me to repair). I had read that some of you had asked the dealer to help. After doing research, calling American Honda myself, I "nicely" asked my dealer if they could help me and talk to Honda on my behalf. He was happy to go to bat for me (which, of course, I was skeptical of). When he called back he told me that Honda would pick up 90% of the cost of the compressor. I picked up my car a couple of hours ago and the total cost to me was $97.35. I was astounded. He did mention something about a redesign. So, if this issue was in years 2016-2018, maybe they redesigned in 2019. In that case, what they put in my car, hopefully, will be the last of the issue. So, talk to your dealer and ask if they would please help you and go to bat for you. I said a little customer service goes a long way to keep a customer coming back. I hope for a good outcome for all who are, or will, deal with this problem. Very disappointed in Honda and their disregard of this issue. Thinking about trading in for a Toyota, or Nissan, or Mazda. Good luck all and remember, it never hurts to ask.
Going through this “compressor “ failure now 2016 civic with 27 k. Dealer said it was nor condenser but compressor was bad 1700$. I called Honda of America waiting for case manager to follow up. Any suggestions... I’ll will keep you posted.
I have a 2016 Honda Civic I bought used with about 50K on it that now has about 85K on it; late last summer the A/C stopped working but I live in Wisconsin so we said we were going to wait until it gets warm again. In the meantime I received the warranty extension letter from Honda (November 2019) for the air conditioning condenser unit so I figured "problem solved." I took the car in yesterday to the Honda dealership and they called me this morning to let me know Honda is covering the A/C condenser unit; however, the A/C compressor unit has a leak in it and it will cost about $1,000 to fix it. I viewed this chat room and called Honda Customer Care who recommended I call back to the Honda dealership and ask to speak to the service manager who will reach out to the Honda district manager. The dealership immediately called me back and said that Honda would pay for 50% of the A/C compressor repair so now I owe about $430. Still not satisfied until this is paid in full by Honda via warranty extension but DO NOT PAY for the A/C condenser or A/C compressor repair on 2016-2018 Honda Civics, thanks.
I suggest that everyone post comments about this damn issue we are all having on Honda’s social media handles like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. So that the world knows how BS Honda is! I’m doing it, join me! Honda needs to pay for our repairs!! And Honda needs to know we are taking a stand!!

My wife and I both own 2016 Civic 4dr 1.4L sedans. My wife’s 2016 Civic EX-L with 55k miles suddenly began blowing warm air when AC was selected. We live near Seattle so we don’t use the AC much. We have owned three 2002 Civic EX - all with well over 100k miles and never really had AC problems. Judging from the sheer number of complaints though on forums like this, Honda needs to really suck it up and recall not just the condensers but also compressors as well! If they don’t, we’re probably going to shop other brands soon. The legendary quality control reputation Honda has built over the years is really taking a beating of late!
I bought a 2017 Honda Civic EX and the AC is blowing hot air. Previously, i had to have the body control module replaced. The car has less than 10,000 miles on it. This is my second issue with the car. I'm taking it to the dealership on Monday to have them take a look so hopefully whatever the dealership finds will be covered. I already have American Honda on speed dial so i will be following up with them. I am surprised that Honda is having these issue. I had a toyota yaris for four years and never had any issues outside of normal wear and tear. I've only had this car since March and more than likely will be looking to sell it once the DMV opens back up and i can get my title in hand.
2017 honda civic lx-p couple 21000 miles one day after I drive it home the AC blows hot air. Taking back to the dealer today. Any news on warranty info from Honda.
Reuben, if I were you , take it back and return it. Honda is not accepting responsibility on using faulty parts. i will never buy another Honda because of this reason.
After a little research looks like Honda has extended the warranty on AC components. So maybe thats an acknowledgment of the issues. The car still has a lot of the original warranty still left. I don't know, the car is going t back to the dealer today. We will see what they say. If they try to charge me at all. Then ill probably return it. I have had it 3 days now.
Honda extended the warranty on the ac "condenser", not other ac parts like the compressor which is also a known defective part and VERY expensive to replace. Funny how when the ac quits working though, it is somehow not related to the warranty covered condenser when you take it in. Hmmm.....
Its going back today. I will report back to this thread and let everyone know what the dealer said and what they are willing to do or not do about it.
Reuben hopefully it works out. I took my 2017 in on Monday and they replaced the condensor under warranty, no questions asked. Hopefully it will be a seamless process for you as well given the short amount of time you've had the car. When does your warranty expire?
I have 5 months or 12000 miles left on the original new Honda warranty.
Well the AC issue should be fixed under warranty then. If they try to charge you, walk out and call corporate. Also, call the dealership about either honoring the warranty or refunding your money.
I'm having the same problem. Hot air coming out of air conditioner. I called America Honda and they said there is an extended 10 year warranty on the a/c condenser only. It's obvious, after reading all these same comments, Honda should not only extend warranty on the condenser, but on all parts of the a/c unit. I have an appointment to bring my car to a dealership next week. See what happens....
I think that Honda should cover with all. Tuesday have appointment... I hope good news.....
I spoke with my local Honda dealers service and basically I'm covered unless the AC is broke from rock damage. If the car has rock damage then I can claim insurnace. I have full coverage.
Hi There. I have a 2016 Civic and the AC recently stopped working. Like many of you I brought it in thinking it would be covered under the condenser extended warranty only to be told it is the compressor seals that are leaking. Originally quoted $1375 to replace but then they said they would do it for goodwill for $250 which I arranged to have done next week. Car has 60k miles and is out of warranty. Is this worth pursuing with Honda corporate?
Don’t waste your time with corporate, useless people answering the phone. They will just read from a script.
My 2017 Civic Hatchback AC stopped working today! Will start with the dealer on Tuesday
I am having similar issues. I own a 2016 Honda Civic with less than 20,000 miles and have had multiple issues with my A/C unit. I had the A/C condessor, and coil sets, all replaced last year while the car was still under factory warranty. The process was a bit of a hassle but it was fully covered. Zoom in to this year, same problem, A/C blowing hot air. I find out now that Honda has an extended warranty for the condessor, however this time it's the compressor AND the condessor leaking. Thank goodness I bought an extended aftermarket warranty so it's still fully covered. Here I am now reaffirming what many of you have said; the compressor is NOT COVERED by Honda. They attempted to charge me before realizing I had an extended warranty for an arm and a leg. If any here are involved in organization of the class action, good luck! It's rediculous that Honda is still charging anyone with a 2016-2017 Honda Civic anything A/C related. I hope you all get your money back.
Ok so I got my car fixed today. The condenser was replaced. No big surprise. It was fully covered. Drove it home in 100 degree weather today. So far so good. Good luck guys.
Had a problem with the a/c two years after buying the 2016 Honda Civic EX and couldn’t find anyone to fix it because of a new kind of freon. Finally Honda fixed it, it lasted another summer then first hot day last week and a/c isn’t working again. Took it to Honda today; they’re saying same thing everyone else has said “it’s the compressor not the condenser” and oddly it’s $2100, like everyone else. Are you kidding me?? Do they think people don't do their research or talk or anything? I had a problem with my last Civic (tires) that had a class action lawsuit but they would not fix the problem on that one, either. I’ve bought Hondas for thirty years and the quality continues to go downhill. I have grandchildren that have to ride in my car with me. They aren’t going to be subjected to this BS. Lesson learned—this is the last Honda for me. Going to look at Toyotas tomorrow! I ain’t got time for this!!!!
Took my 2016 civic in 50k miles was making a buzzing sound and blowing warm air on the phone they said $99 diagnostic come to find out when I dropped my car off they said $250 then I get a call saying the 10 year extended warranty will not cover because it was due to road damage. So tell me why this warranty even exists? If they’re going to try to find every little thing to void the warranty. How do you know it’s not a faulty condenser? Why send out a letter if you’re not going to follow through with the warranty. Trying to charge me $1300 to fix the condenser. Called Honda America and I will not stop until they fix it free of charge did not buy a brand new car for the ac to stop working 4 years into owning it. Made a claim with Honda America and they said they would get back to me within 24-48 hours such an inconvenience.
Guys good news!!!!!!!!. Today I was in Honda and fixed my A/C. You should call to America Honda and make a case. Then, make appointment for check your civic in the dealer and they resolve the problem. The compressor and condenser are cover... Believe me. Just call.....
GuruLW35D - can you let us know which number you called to America Honda to make that case? Thanks.
I live in New York, so I called Honda North America 800-999-1009. Also, I just picked my car up from a Honda dealership and there was no charge and they replaced the condenser honoring the 10 yr extended warranty. Hope it lasts....
I own a 2016 Honda Civic as well. In Sep 2018, I took it to the dealership when I first had hot air blowing from the AC. It was under warranty then. They did Evacuate and Recharge as they found a leak and added a dye. The problem occured again this year, now out of warranty period. The dealership quoted 1900 for the job+ diagnostic fee $140. They may give me a 10% discount. Also gave me the number for Honda Service Center. They found now that the leak is from the compressor. Now the dealership as well as Honda says that it is out of the warranty period. They will get back to me within a day or two.
Honda America was no help what so ever told me it’s my fault and that they aren’t going to cover it cause there was a rock in the condenser even though it was the condenser that was the problem they said because of the rock it voids the warranty. My service adviser was able to get the price from $1300 to $1000 but still very frustrated that I had to pay out of pocket for something that they should have fixed since it’s under warranty. First and last Honda I am ever buying. Was just about to do a trade in for a Type R so they could have easily made $50k but I rather go elsewhere since corporate Honda is no help.
Just noticed my 2017 Civic hatchback AC blowing only hot air. I'll be visiting Honda of Joliet (IL), will post here what happens. Thanks all for sharing.
Hi guys, please express your frustration on their social media handles. This way if we all do it in one central place, it will grab their attention. Also, it’s good exposure for the public. https://www.facebook.com/Honda/ http://twitter.com/HondaCustSvc https://instagram.com/honda? igshid=1tapwaryotbnn
1800 999 1009. American Honda just call and make a case. If you paid, so ask about refund. Because condenser and compressor are covered.
Helio ,2016 52K miles and hot air as well. Took it to the dealer and will cost $2200; I have a recall notice about possible A/C condenser replacement due to leaks caused by manufacturing; they told me that was good and that it was the compressor. Total bull crap
You need to demand they fix it, based on the warranty. They’re supposed to fix it American Honda knows about this. You have to go over dealership’s head. Ask them for their corporate number, or see above posts.
@GuruLW35D Called today. Condenser is covered, compressor is NOT, unless your vehicle is still under warranty.
An update on my Honda Civic 2016. Honda called me and offered to have it fixed at the local dealership, but I would have to pay $750 in addition to the $140 I had paid for diagnostic fee saying that is a goodwill gesture. I decided to take it and the car seems to be fixed (compressor replaced).
I took mine into the dealership today for the same reason and they told me it was cooling condenser and Honda is paying for everything.
Also experiencing the same A/C issues as everyone else in my 2016 Civic Touring. I'll make an appointment with the dealer to have it checked out. I'm hoping it's the condenser (and Honda will cover it). If it's the compressor, I'm not sure how to proceed. We'll see how it goes next week.
My 2016 Honda touring as well, 2,005.33 to replace the compressor. Going to pay it, will be too hot this summer. Honda Corp phone number everyone has listed is not answering due to "technical difficulty" which is almost funny..
Judging from all the responses here it appears that the compressor's on 2016/2017 Honda Civic's completely fails after about a year, give or take a couple months. That's a roughly $2000 repair cost EVERY YEAR, or if you beg to one of their customer service reps, they might pity you enough to cover part of the cost. THAT'S BULL****. If you haven't already, post on their social media accounts about your complaints, they need to extend the warranty on the compressor, like they did for the condenser. They know it's faulty, they just need more public pressure on them to formally address this issue. This forum listing is just a black hole, a trash can for all our complaints.
Picked up my car today from the dealership. A/C has been fixed and is blowing super cold. Luckily for me they covered everything. Even gave me a loaner car.
I have a Honda Civic 2016 touring. As soon as I bought the car brand new I had audio issues for the next year. Finally they did some kind of update firmware and it worked for a while. Still acts up now and then to where I have to reboot. I have 10,398 miles on the car as I was ill didn’t drive it then the pandemic so it’s been sitting in the garage for months. time I drove it the air conditioning worked. Now that the weather is warmed up and things are opening up again ,and first time I took it out the air-conditioning was not working. I don’t know whether I should call Honda corporation or just take it down for the diagnostic test which I was quoted it would be $328 Plus the temperature will be 100° and a three hour trip round trip. I may be getting rid of this car and it’s sad because I put a lot of money into it Installing a clear skin finish protector. Damn I’m pissed.
Damn, really wish I'd checked this thread before my experience. They are definitely out to get people's money. It's not right. 2016 Civic EX, 42k miles. A/C just started blowing warm about 2 weeks ago. The dealer I purchased it from wanted $300 JUST to diagnose and made no mention of the fact that this is a known issue with this model or there's an extended warranty. Shady AF. Took it to another local Honda dealer that charged $170 for the diagnostic and said that if the issue was with the condenser, everything would be covered under the warranty, but anything else would be out of pocket. Sure enough they found something to charge me an arm and a leg for! In addition to the faulty condenser, they apparently found a "hairline fracture" in the hose that would need to be replaced. When I asked what caused this and if it was secondary to the condenser, the service advisor said "we don't really know." Okay, right not sketchy at all. They wanted $550 for this simple repair. I told them I was not paying that much and managed to get them down to $320, which I forked over since I didn't really have a choice. But in looking back, I believe the poster who said they're just looking for a way to make some money because they don't want to work for free by doing these warranty repairs. Really pissed at Honda for screwing people over like this
I'm getting my 2016 Civic - AC Compressor fix tomorrow at my local dealership, the total repair bill is about $2,100 but the dealership Warranty Department is offering me 60/40 and they're willing to eat 60% of the cost of the repair. I'm going to be paying $850 tomorrow to get my AC fix, finally. I have an open case with Honda America, I've been assigned to case manager and we spoke initially, I sent her all my maintenance history statements, but after that initial conversation with her - she disappeared on me. She's nowhere to be found after many voicemails from her Google number. I'm basically left dealing with the dealer. In my opinion, the dealership will probably be making a huge profit margin out of my 60/40 repair. The dealership is helping me due to their "good gracious." This irritates me. Honda knows this is a known issue, they didn't want to be responsible 100% so they only extend the warranty to the AC Condensor and not the AC Compressor too. I strongly feel the extended warranty should cover the entire AC unit. This is certainly a bitter taste - I still love Honda but I wish I should have listened to my mechanic friend and never buy the first few years of new remodel years.
Very similar issue. 2016 Civic EX-T. Took to dealership was told the condenser is fine but the compressor is leaking and to replace it would cost $1800. They also negotiated that they could sign me up for a 5 yr extended warranty for $2500 that "might" cover the replacement cost. I kindly told them there was no way I would pay for that, especially after reading everyone's stories here and seeing that the issue could pop back up in a year. I am left with no A/C in a car that is only 4 1/2 years old. Pathetic.
After much persistence with the dealer, "Honda" is paying for more than half of what i was quoted to replace the whole A/C system (2016 Civic EX/L). Because I waited to repair the compressor, the compressor spun in reverse and shot metal shavings throughout the whole system, essentially rendering the whole system useless and in need of repair/replacement. I was originally quoted close to 6k to fix it and now I am paying 2k to get it fixed. If Honda ever accepts responsibility of a faulty compressor I am submitting it for repayment. Don't waste your time with Honda corporate, have your local dealer followup with their rep. I am not happy paying the 2k, but I live in CA and need A/C.
Good luck getting the Honda to accept your recall. I took my 2016 civic to the dealership for the AC recall. My civic is currently blowing cold on the passenger side and warm on the driver side vents so i know its leaking freon. The dealership charged me a 159.00 diagnose fee and if they find the fault to be the AC condenser then it will be warranty but of course they found a small leak near the AC compressor... At the end of the day, I paid 1,200 to replace the AC compressor and tensioner. Unfortunately outside shops don't have the correct equipment to recharge the freon. What a recall scam to bring loyal customers into the dealership to be up-sold.
Fingers crossed...since Honda America is having "technical difficulties", I called my dealership. I already had a quote of $1800 to replace the compressor in my 2017 Civic Hatchback. My service rep told me that any time a civic comes in with AC issues, she automatically assumes it's the compressor and she's right 98% of the time. I asked her since I was unable to get ahold of Honda America if there was anything she can do. She told me she would get this to the service manager who would then take it to the district manager, who is the direct line to Honda, to basically plea on my behalf to get this covered. I'm not holding my breath, but they way she spoke gave me a little hope. We have a 9 year old Fit and a 25 yo Del Sol and have never had issues like this. Which I kindly mentioned. I will let you know.
Can someone on here give me a little advise? 2018 Civic-leased car-i'm over my miles already at the 2 year mark-I have 45,000. Air broke and theyre trying to charge me $1400 to fix saying that its out of warranty and the condensor is the part that was on the extended recall and not the compressor-I disagree and they're all related-any assistance?? advise?
I have a 2016 Civic and the A/C started blowing hot air out of the driver’s side sometime in May 2019. The car was only 3 years old at that point, so I thought it was strange that the A/C would give out so soon. Later that year, I received a letter from Honda regarding the extended warranty for the A/C condenser and that I needed to take it to the dealership if I was having problems, so it can be diagnosed and repaired and no cost to me. That is, if the issue was identified to be the condenser. It turns out that there was a leak, not from the condenser, but from the compressor, in which I was told was NOT covered under the extended warranty, and the out of pocket expense would be roughly $1500- $1700 to replace. I was shocked! I didn’t understand how they can charge so much if there are so many people having issues with the A/C! They called me a week later and offered to replace the condenser at a “discounted cost” of $550, so I accepted and just had them perform the repairs to get my A/C functioning again. It’s working great now, but I really feel like they should’ve just honored the warranty and had it replaced/repaired, free of charge.
2018 Honda Civic EX , just under 19K, AC went out yesterday. I live in Phoenix, AZ and we've been having temperatures above 110 for the past week (117 the other day). It's impossible to drive in that heat...........I bought the vehicle NEW 9/18, and just paid the loan off in June. Contacted Honda America and they told me no service bulletin on my VIN for AC issues (hog wash), that all I have is the 3 yr/ 36K warranty to go by. Made an appointment to take the car in to the local AutoNation Honda Dealership..........at 19K miles and less than 2 years old HONDA's reputation is going down the drain. We'll see what happens at the dealership with the compressor/condensor BS exuses...........mine will be covered...........thinking about selling it before I reach the 3 year / 36k mark based on all of repeat issues folks have been having.
@ Guru3YSTH, go through American Honda. They know of N issue that’s been going on for a couple years on the entire shady AC system. They’ll create a case and then you’ll have to get your AC diagnostic. Costs about $200. The only thing covered out of warranty is condenser, but everything in these vehicles as it pertains to the AC system is bad! You’ll be looking at $800-$2000 out of pocked. On mine they paid for the parts and I was on the hook for labor, the most expensive piece, $1300. I’ve been added to the list of owners who have filed a lawsuit against Honda. This was my last Honda I’ll ever own!
2017 Honda Civic began blowing hot air on drivers side. Finally blowing just hot air. Began researching. Noticed many owners having same problem. Called Honda and was advised the condensor was installed improperly. It will cause tiny pinholes in AC lines causing freon to slow leak. Honda covered repairs, parts and labor. Many dealers will tell you it's from road damage it's not!
"Called Honda and was advised the condensor was installed improperly. It will cause tiny pinholes in AC lines causing freon to slow leak." Yes, that's what Honda acknowledges is the issue, but in my situation the Dealer said the condensor, compression and clutch assembly all needed to be replaced, with no explanation why. It almost feels like just a cash grab by the dealer, if they know Honda will pay for the condensor, why not replace some more related parts in the process and charge me for the parts and labor.
Sounds about right. I guess I got off for paying the $1300 labor in the whole deal. It’s a Honda racket! I’m on the list with others I’m a lawsuit!
My 2017 Civic---currently about 21,000 miles, started having AC problems several months ago. I didn't give it too much attention in the fall and winter. I received the letter from Honda and took the car to the dealer where I bought it. They said they would look at it, but it might cost about $500 to fix. This is on a recent lease, where supposedly everything was covered. I drove away. I took it to another Honda dealer, which did look at it for free. They told me there was nothing really wrong. They mentioned that I should turn on the recirculation button; I have used that before; it helps. I think I had it on; I think they were kind of gaslighting on that one. They said there was a "small indentation" on the condenser, but no leak. I heard the story about the rocks, which has been mentioned several times on this site. Not sure what this means, but they said they performed a full vacuum and recovered .375 KGS. They recharged to full specs---.426 KGS; added dye and verified no leaks. The lease is up at the end of August. Not sure what to do; maybe I could extend the lease. I am not going to buy the car and am a little nervous about leasing a new one. Has Honda fixed the problem in its 2020 Civics? I am tempted to check out a Toyota Corolla. I have had maybe five Hondas; they've been reliable up until now.
My Honda Civic 2016 Touring has 10,398 miles on it. The air was blowing hot. I took it into Honda dealership paid 150.00 for diagnostic. The dealership called me to tell me my condenser was fine , however due to a “faulty compressor “it would have to be replaced at a total of $1938 not including tax. I got off the phone with the dealer and Immediately called Honda Corp. The gentleman at HC told me because of the low miles And the fact the car was at the dealers he would give me a case number. It Took Honda Corp. two weeks to decide on my case. I finally got a call from the dealer telling me my car was fixed and I would have to pay $655 and Honda would pick up the rest. Honda America tried to contact me to except their offer. I didn’t bother calling them back .I jwent down and paid my bill. They expected me to be very happy that I did not have to pay the entire repair bill. It was a relief I didn’t have to come up with over two grand for a “faulty compressor“ Quoting the Honda technician, but I shouldn’t of have had to pay anything. So basically Honda corporation told me because of the low miles on the car was the only reason they got involved.
Bought a ‘17 coupe LX 2.0 two weeks ago for my son - just beyond the 36 months warranty (December ‘16 build date). The usual signs: discovered a couple of days ago - cold on passenger side, warm on drivers side. I have read every post on this forum; looking for guidance, please. Should I go first to Honda and get a case opened, then go to the local dealer, or just take my chances with the dealer? Sounds like there is a chance for maybe 60/40 Honda coverage on full fix (compressor, condenser, evap, etc) if approached properly? Also considering a non- dealer option if I’m not happy (I’m not opposed to aftermarket parts, if proven yet). Fourth and last Honda, since 1984, for me. I’d like to fix and keep this one - Toyota (again) from here on out.
Follow up to my post on from a week ago. 2018 Civic EX with under 19k miles, owned new. Dealer first reported that the compressor and parts were bad, and that it was covered under the 3 yr / 36k mile warranty. A day later and I get a call saying good news, compressor and parts are replaced, but you have another problem: Condenser is leaking, BUT it's not due to the pitting etc. its due to ROAD debris or a rock. They took a pic for me and whola the condenser does have road damage.....WTF? The problem is the position of the condenser, which is located right up front behind the plastic grill, with NO protection from foreign objects hitting it....a design flaw and a money grab for Honda Service Centers. This repair cost me $513 out of pocket on a car with under 19k miles, one owner and still under warranty. Take a look at the attached pictures, look at the damage the condenser has taken in less than 2 years and under 19K. This will happen again and again, and it'll cost me more than $513 (i wasn't charged for the freon recharge $330)....Honda designed the AC systems poorly on the 2016-2018 Civics, bad units, and bad placement

Here is a link to a class action law suit about this issue. Everyone posting on here should contact then and add their details: https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit- settlements/consumer-products/auto-news/honda- class-action-alleges-civic-a-c-defect/
2017 with 39,950 miles. Honda said out of warranty. compressor leak, suction hose leak, estimate over 2k. Said they would enter a case and someone would get back to me in 2-5 business days. Not holding my breath. Have loved all my hondas, but if I have to pay out of pocket for this, this will be my last honda.
Notice where all the pits are from road debris?? At the bottom where there is absolutely no protection from rocks or any other type of road debris. Just wait till you have to get one of your fog light bulbs replaced. It will cost you almost $200 for a bulb replacement! They have to take off your entire front bumper to get to it. Another design flaw from Honda!
Hello Everyone, In an exact year from now, my Honda Civic 2016 Touring was not blowing cold air. Where I live, it gets extremely hot. I took it to Honda and they said my condenser is leaking. I paid the $100 fee and the warranty covered for a new condenser. A few months later, I got a letter to inform me that the condenser if faulty and that they will put a new one for free and any money paid will be issued. Idk for what reason but they would not refund my $100. Because of this problem, Honda extended the ac condenser warranty to 10 years. Anyways, time has passed and it only been about 1 year since they fixed my AC condenser. My AC is blowing out hot air AGAIN! I took it to Honda and got a call that they do not know what is wrong with it and that they have to open my dash board! Smh
Yep. The next thing they get you for the compressor and coil. It’s a Honda racket going on with the 16-19 Honda Civic AC. Get ready to shell out $800-$2000! Honda corporate won’t do anything for you. The local dealer is suppose to give good will, ha! They’ll make you pay for the most expensive piece of the repair, LABOR. Mine was $1301 for compressor, coil, condenser. I’ve joined the lawsuit.
Notice it’s the lower 8-10 rows on the front of the flimsy-@55 condenser that gets pummeled - a lot of the time by small insects. I went ahead and paid an independent shop (who I trust) to replace my condenser which was obviously damaged by hitting something like a high curb by the previous owner. No chance I would have won that argument with Honda. I’m going to zip-tie on a custom-cut section of gutter guard this weekend, but only on the lower ‘mouth’ section. I’m not expecting 100% protection, but it’ll be better than what it is now! Oh, and by the way, a review of my 2014 CRV condenser, which sits a lot higher - almost NO dented fins, despite 100K miles.
Los anybody work with a lawyer? They told me because I didn’t bring it the first year they can’t sue them. Is that true?
I bought my new Honda civic 2017 ex hatchback in May 2017. In Feb, 2019, the car had about 17k miles on it. The AC stopped working, it had no cold air and it was fixed by the dealer under warranty. Today, August 1st 2020, the AC stopped working again, the car has about 28k miles on. it blows warm air on the driver side and a little cold air on the passenger side. I do not know what to do now since it was out of warranty 2 months ago. It has passed the 3 year-warranty. I was shocked that many people have the same problem. Hopefully Honda will do something about it. This is my 1st Honda and it will be my last Honda. I will never buy a Honda again.
Purchased my Civic hatchback 2017 back in Oct of 2016 when it was first released. A/C worked like a champ for years. Fast-forward to 46k miles and out of warranty. Right side is blowing cold air while the driver side is blowing hot air. Very dangerous during humid driving conditions with defroster not working properly on the driver's side. Since the issuance of the TSB and extended 10 year warranty. Brought it back to my original dealer who wasted 6 hours of my life to diagnose the issue that probably took 10 minutes. They said it's a condenser leak but my VIN isn't eligible. I went ahead and shown them the TSB which states the part number for the recalled condenser and that all trims of civic that have 1.5t engine are on this TSB extended warranty for the A/C. Went to his manager who claimed that they're going to contact Honda corporate and get back to me about covering the cost of repair. Such BS. No physical damage on the condenser either. If I get a hard time from them, I'll be jumping on board for that class action.
My ac on my 2016 honda civic is also blowing hot air. Took it too the dealership and they said its the compressor which they can cover however it is in backorder so they can't fix it. This is so ridiculous. I need my AC fixed because its hot out here in MA. This will be my first and last honda that i will purchase.
Honda called me back stating that the hatchback's aren't covered under the TSB. What BS. They use the identical A/C system and components. I have the same exact issue as the hundreds of other people who brought it in for the A/C issue. They're assigning me a case manager who will see if they will "good will" my repair. Alongside a deductible for this repair if they approve me. Redicuolous to think that we'd need to be doing this every year or two if this continues to break. Certainly will be first and last Honda if I gotta come out of pocket for this A/C at 47K.
That’s Honda for you! They’ll scapegoat out of everything that should be their ultimate responsibility. I will never buy another Honda.
2017 Civic LX. 60k km. Leaking compressor and damaged compressor clutch due to leak. Both require replacement. Possibly a condenser issue as well (I was instructed that they could only find out if the compressor was repaired first). Not covered under warranty. 2300$ CAD to repair at the local dealership. Looking into calling corporate. Also looking into starting a class action lawsuit for the compressor.
My son is having the same issue with his 2016 Honda Civic and is getting the runaround from the dealership. Its a shame that Honda's reputation has gone down. I've owned Hondas since 1984 and now have a 2004 with approx. 170K miles. No wonder the dealership maintenance guys told me to hold on to it because it was built better than the crap they're producing now..
I had similar issue in 2017 civic hatchback sports touring. Compressor leaked and got fixed once in Jan 19 as it was under warranty. It happened in Nov 19 again. They replaced the compressor and warranty still covers it but happened again yesterday and car is out of warranty now . They quote yes me $800 for replacement, I said no. They will call me again on Monday to see if half the cost of compressor can be covered by Honda and rest by me.
Nothing that hasn't been said before, but want to tack on my story as well. Bought my 2017 Civic Si Used with ~25k miles, have about 35k on it now and the A/C started blowing hot air. Called 3 different non-dealership shops, and they all said they can't do anything because it's the new freon type. About to take it to the dealership, pray for me.
2017 Honda Civic, quoted $1900 for a faulty compressor. American Honda dropped this down to $1000. Hope this class action suit materializes
So Honda call me again that they will replace all with cost of $60. Amazing how initially I was quoated over $800. I picked up car so new condenser has 1 year or 12000 mile warranty on it . Hope it doesn’t break afterthat.
INDIANAPOLIS, IN. I have the same issue 2017 HONDA CIVIC Hatchback EX-L with 45,000 miles. Summer 2018 and 2019 sometime blowed hot air. 2020 broke, the A/C stopped. I bought this car 0 miles on april 2017.
Asabovesobelow answered 4 years ago
I have the same issue with my Honda Civic hatchback. I was lucky enough to purchase an extended warranty. I bought the car brand new. Compressor went out at 50k miles. I am now 100 miles over warranty and guess what went out AGAIN!! They told me it would be over $2k to fix. I was barely there in April and they said I was just low on the expensive Freon. Paid $400 then and 4 months later this bs. Also there is still a nationwide shortage for the parts 2-3 weeks wait. Horrible!!!
I bought a 2017 Honda Civic and the sales rep's assertion they are reliable cars with quality engineering. Last thing I expected was to be stuck with a $2600 repair bill for a problem I repeatedly returned to Honda to solve beginning 1 month after I bought the car. And now I see numerous people experiencing the same AC issues. I thought it was coincidence that the last time I brought our car to Honda there was another person describing the same AC problem with their Civic. The kicker is, each time I brought it in under warranty, they recharged, replaced O rings, topped off the fluids, and even replaced the condenser once. Now that it is out of warranty they can miraculously see that the ongoing problem in fact stems from the evaporator which is not covered under the extended warranty and will cost $2600 of my hard earned dollars to repair. And they will not recharge or top it off to keep the AC going through the summer because it is against environmental regulations yet this is what they did each time I brought it back. How did they miss the evaporator the entire time the car was under warranty? Were they not thorough or just dishonest? Either way the "quality engineering" has been debunked for me.
I bought a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback with 40K miles 6 months ago in Feb2020. Obviously the sales rep never mentioned this A/C problem on their vehicles which should have been a recall. My A/C started running hot about a week ago so I dropped it off at my local Honda dealer yesterday. They call me bright and early this morning talking about the $140 fee to do diagnostic testing for the A/C problem. They wanted me to agree right away on the fee so I started asking questions first, and told her I also have the 5 year extended warranty. This was before I even knew about the factory issues and TSB. After a few back and forth Q and A, I told her to go ahead and check the car but I never agreed on the fee LOL. I don't feel comfortable with paying anything for a car that is under warranty. And even if they tried to charge me the fee when I went to pick up my car I would have given them hell about it and refused to pay because I didn't just buy a car 6 months ago and pay for an extended warranty to then have to pay fees. So as soon as I hung up with Honda I then found articles about this problem and I said I'm DEFINITELY not paying a cent now that I know it is a factory issue and they are just swindling people left and right for repairs. Well, she happened to call me just now saying "Good news! The car will be repaired and everything will be covered, the condenser needs to be changed". She still didn't tell me about the "recall". I'm hoping that it will be a permanent fix but if it's not at least now I know that anything related to the A/C will have to be covered by them or I will be joining in on that lawsuit that is going on.
Can anyone who was able to get Honda to cover some/all of the cost who was outside of the 36k warranty give any examples of what to say to the dealer or Honda directly?
Does anyone know if Honda has fixed the AC problems in its 2020 Civics? The lease on my 2017 Civic is almost up. Will I be taking a risk by leasing a 2020 Civic? I asked a service worker at a dealership in Illinois; he didn't sound too convincing. He said it will take some time to learn if the problem has been fixed.
Just an update: I called my dealer, he said he can’t contact Honda Corp. for me so I called them (800- 999-1009) and pressed opt 2 for parts / etc. I got routed to cust service. I explained I know this is a widespread issue and I’m “grateful” Honda covers the condenser but it is a larger issue with the compressor and I wanted to see if they were able to review the situation at provide any assistance with the repair. I got a case number, sent to another department where he said it was sent to a case manager for review in 1-2 bus. days. I’m not holding my breath but I’m hopeful they’ll cover something. 2017 Civic EX 2.0 65k miles roughly Quoted: $1675 for compressor, Honda is already covering condenser, freon recharge and labor for condenser.
I’m looking at Toyota now. Honda handled this whole AC issue flat out wrong! Charging customers for a known problem for the entire AC system. I’m looking at the 2021 Camry now to replace my 2016 Civic. My last three cars were Honda’s. My fourth will not be.
My civic 2017 also gets similar issue. Brewing hot on driver side while a little cold on the passenger side. Will contact dealer tmr and keep it updated here. After review all the replies, I feel no hope for it. :(
Update: I went to the Honda service and did the diagnosis. They told me there is both compressor and condenser leak and quoted me 2k+ for the compressor. No idea what should I do now. They will help me to contact Honda and get back to me later. I just took my car back and wait for their response. I would say that is definitely my last Honda.
Kevin - Definitely get ahold of Honda. I did the same. I called and let them know what happened and I basically said “I’m grateful Honda covered the condenser but it’s a widespread issue with compressors which is a costly repair. I wanted to see if Honda is able to help cover any portion of the repairs.” I got a call 2 days later from the dealer saying they’re covering 75%. Bare in mind, my original quote was $1675. Dealer told me my out of pocket would end up around $275. So it seems like when Honda helps cover repairs dealers knock off a lot of their bullshit charges because my 25% should have been around $419 from the original quote. They took off $500 somewhere along the line.
Thanks Matchoo. I got replied from Honda and they will cover 85% of the cost. I still need to pay 300 bucks but it is much better than original quote.

Same issue, Honda dealership wants 1900 to replace the air compressor in my 2016 Honda Civic LX with 16K miles on it. Not under warranty and Honda will not do anything about. Obviously a widespread issue and very expensive to repair. Honda should pay for it.
I've been going back and forward with my local dealership for this exact same issue. Can't seem to get this resolve. I'm being offered a 50/50 split on the repairs, but I don't think any of us should be responsible for this. Has anyone tried to get a buy back?

Open Case Numbers with Honda and let them know about this issue. https://crrs.secure.force.com/service/hondaw2c
I have a 2016 Civic that I bought in 2015. I've owned many Hondas over the years and never had a problem. Until now. Early this summer, the AC stopped working. I live in NC and need to have it. I took it to the dealership, and they charged me $2500 to replace the whole thing (IDK a compressor from a condenser, I just know they replaced the whole thing), and said this happens in all kinds of recent models, did not acknowledge any Civic problems. Do I have any recourse?
I recommend giving it a go. I contacted Honda corp. before the repair and it took my cost from $1675 to $230. You can call them and let them know you did the repair already and you were recently notified of the service bulletin and see if they are willing to reimburse any portion of the cost you incurred. Be prepared to let them know what dealership did it and who you worked with. For me, they contacted the dealership directly to confirm my info. Give it a go. Worst case they say no, best case you get some $ back that you didn’t expect.

My 2016 Honda Civic has the condenser replace twice within a year. Now the dealer said it is the dam evaporator and it will cost me $1935.00 to have it replaced, evac and recharge. It seemed an entire air-conditioning system of the Honda Civics is defective and a recall to repair an entire air-conditioning system of the Honda Civics must be made. There is a class-action lawsuit filed by Andre Wong on December 12, 2019. US district case 2:19-cv-10537 in California. Anyone know how and which step to take to join this lawsuit?

I have a 2016 Civic EX with less than 37,000 miles. The compressor just went out and AC blows hot (live in Texas where it's hot and humid, yikes!) and I realized this is a big issue here because I can't defog the windshield. Quoted $2,400 for compressor repair and $135 for diagnostics. Contacted Honda Corporate, yet to hear back about their "goodwill." Super disappointed in my car - got Honda for the reliability, wish I went with another car instead.

I have a 2016 civic ex. ac started not blowing the cold air and it's already hot in California, so I decided to go to a dealership and I paid $319.88 for a diagnostic which inspected all the things includes tires, brakes, fluids, etc. The problem with my car was not the condenser nor the compressor but the evaporator. the estimate I got to replace the evaporator is $2,739.44 :) Is there a way to lower the quote? is it safe to go to a local car repair place and replace the part?
For everyone here who's gone through this, contact Berger Montague who are running a class action against Honda. https://bergermontague.com/cases/honda-civic-ac-lawsuit/ Apparently Honda is claiming in court that they're covering all expenses related to the AC repairs, so they are currently asking if you've gotten a repair to file for a reimbursement (which Honda will likely deny) and then provide to them as evidence in court. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10167735-0001.pdf

Here is the court files for the Wong vs Honda case that someone was referring to. You can read through some of the national highway safety reports that people have submitted. So many incidences of compressor, AC system, etc. out on their Honda’s. This is definitely a huge issue! https://www.courthousenews.com/wp- content/uploads/2019/12/Honda.CA_.pdf

I had my compressor fixed 2 months ago and now the AC Is blowing hot again! Very frustrated.
I have a 2017 Honda Civic. AC stopped working last week. I took it to the dealership because my usual mechanic didn't have the newer freon to recharge it and to check if the failure was because of the condenser from the recall bulletin. They had the car for multiple days just to diagnose it and found that it wasn't the condenser but a failed AC compressor clutch and coil that caused all of the freon to leak out. The quote they gave me for labor and parts was about ~$1900. Based off on the comments, this seems like a recurring issue that needs to be addressed and reimbursed. I had a 2008 Civic before this and it was such a reliable car for 12 years. I'm disappointed with the issues in the newer generation Civics.

My dealer wanted to charge $120 to diagnose if it was the condenser or not, but agreed to check for free after talking to a service manager. Don't know the outcome yet.

20017 honda civic SI with 4500 miles blowing hot air, out of warranty last August due to age, dealer wants 340 plus mentioned beyond that Honda Goodwill might take care of that I thought I would spend 160 to get a freon charge, but now I am really worried and I do not know what to do. This is my 5th Honda, first one was Honda Civic 1976 first year in the market Iwill check for feedback tomorrow
Back again! Fortunately I was able to get my condenser replaced back in 2019 (2016 Honda Civic EX), with all of your help. My sister also has a 2016 Honda Civic LX, which the AC decided to die on this year. Her car however is in the Compressor & Condenser Issue Group. The dealer is stating that the Condenser is covered but cannot be repaired without first repairing the Compressor out of pocket for a whopping $2100. After reading these comments etc, we've contacted American Honda and have a case number for someone to review for us. Hoping to also get Honda to cover a portion of the out of pocket cost through this goodwill process! However, how many people have to have issues with the Compressor as well before they extend its warranty too?

followup: the free condenser check I talked them into revealed a leaking condenser and they replaced it free of charge on my 2016 ex, so zero out of pocket. looking at the paperwork they had me sign Honda of America was charged about $1k for the warranty work. They claim that no other leaks were found and that I should be good to go. Plus, the 10 year warranty on the condenser is still good so if it fails again maybe I'll be covered.. Maybe.
Back again after a year and less then 6000 miles driven after having my condenser replaced on warranty. Anyone have a number for me to call for corporate? Im so pissed!

I have a 2017 Honda Civic LX with 26.6K miles blowing hot air. I thought this was unusual after owing 2 other Hondas. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow and not sure what the outcome will be after reading everyone's responses to the same issue.
I just got my AC fixed from a dealership for free. I’ve got a 2016 Civic, 48000 miles. It started blowing hot air and was making a loud hissing sound. I took it to my local shop where I always go and they said it would be $150 to diagnose. Fine. Then they called me back and said actually it would be $360 to diagnose because of the kind of freon. So I found this page and called American Honda customer service (1-800-999-1009). They told me the AC condenser was under an extended warranty. So I took to a Honda dealership. I told them I was having a problem with my AC condenser (even though I wasn’t sure that was the problem.) I had to sign an estimate for $150-360 in case it was something besides the condenser. The next day they called me up and said it was the condenser and we’ve replaced it free of charge under the warranty. I picked it up and they gave me paperwork saying “the condenser was not manufactured to specification. It can produce tiny holes due to corrosion.” Drove it home today with cool air, no hissing sound. Very pleased that they repaired it for free.

A follow-up. I just got my 2017 Honda Civic LX AC fixed from the dealership for free. No charge for diagnostic test. It was the condenser which was under 10 yr warranty. I'm very pleased that Honda repaired it for free.
The lease on my 2017 Civic expired earlier this year. I had the same problems many others have had; blowing hot air…dealer wanted to charge for "diagnosis", etc. After 15+ years of leasing from one Honda dealer, I went to another and leased a 2021 Civic in July. I went over and over how frustrated I was with the 2017 Civic, and that I didn't want to deal with those problems again. I've had the 2021 Civic for a few months, and guess what, the AC doesn't work! I took it to the dealer today. When I called a couple of weeks ago, they mentioned a $400 diagnosis fee. I said I wasn't going to pay that. Anyway, they supposedly looked at it today for a few minutes and said they couldn't find anything wrong. The guy said it was working. He gave some line about it being cold outside, so the climate system wouldn't make it that cool on the inside of the vehicle. BS. Maybe this is Honda's latest line. The AC doesn't work and I doubt they conducted much of a check. I said, "Am I supposed to drive a car with no AC until 2024?"

2016 Honda ext. Same issue as others. AC went out after 2 years. Then again at 4 years. Brought to dealership. "fixed" for $300. AC went out again this summer. Said it wasn't covered under warranty. Quoted me $3500. I said no. They said they could get Honda goodwill. I still paid $1000. After 2 months, AC already out again. Brought it back, they said they can't find anything wrong. Filled with freon. 5 days later, AC not blowing cold again. This is so frustrating!
