Changing Engine Oil and Engine Oil FIlter

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Honda Accord LX at 111000 miles. The owner's manual says that I should replace engine oil every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or every 6 months. However, most of the people around me says it should be done every 3,000 miles or every 3 months. Which one should be the guideline to be followed? It has been around 2.5 months since I changed the engine oil. I have noticed today that the oil is about in the middle between the full level and low level marks in the dipstick and its color has become darker. Moreover, do I need to replace the engine oil filter every time when I replace the engine oil?

You can just follow the manufacturers scheduled maintenance... seems good enough for everything except an F1 race car. Kinda like asking what color is the best or prettiest. Be ready for all types of sane and.. CRAZY oil advice!

The 3,000 mile oil change is a thing of the past. Change it at the recommended interval or once a year, whichever comes first and you will be fine. Always use a name brand good quality filter and avoid anything that says Fram on it.

3000 mile oil change intervals is not a thing of the past. There is a reason why it's there. I have a 1998 Honda accord LX. Especially in winter oil changes matter. Despite my manual saying 7500 miles the premium engine oil which i put in says 10000 miles wouldn't even last 3000 miles. If you have a new car you can follow the manual and check your engine oil condition every 1000 miles to be sure. My car is 20 plus years old and I'll be damned if it can run 5000 miles before an oil change. If you have an old car .... Check the oil level and condition of it every 1000 miles. If I had to follow the intervals on my manual then I could say bye to my VTEC engine. Oh be sure to put premium oil in winter zones Mobil 1 worked pretty well for me on cold starts.
