Drive side sliding door does not latch completely

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,

My 2004 Odyssey driver side sliding door closes but does not latch completely, if I push in at the rear center of the door, door will close and the door open light does not come on.
After I push the door in, I hear motor humming for a 5-7 seconds.
This is different from the passenger door where I hear a short hum than immediately followed by a latch locking click.

Also door cannot open from front switch, door started to open, then steps with beeping.  Can only be opened using door latches.  When opening door latch with normal pull, I get the door stuck beeping.  Door will only open if I pull fully, seems like I need to pull with a bit more force to overcome a slight block.

I have cleaned the contact and lubricated the center hinge pin and problem persisted.

Would appreciate any advise.  Thanks

Has that section of the vehicle ever been involved in an accident? If so, the door has more than likely come out of adjustment. Take it back to the shop that did the repair and make them adjust it. It should be covered by their in house warranty. Check all gaskets and weatherstripings to see if they're properly seated. If not, they could be creating a sealing issue. If it hasn't been in an accident or you're uncertain, you have either a door alignment issue or an electronic latching issue. This is a problem that should be addressed by the dealership. However, if you can isolate the problem, you'd save money avoiding the dealership.

The vehicle has never been in an accident. The weather stripping and gaskets all look to be in good shape. The door does not look to be out of alignment. The motor keeps humming makes me think it is some thing no latching correctly.

Were you able to fix this problem? I have the exact same thing going on right now. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

That door has been a real pain in our 2005 Odyssey. The Odyssey build quality is not up to Honda standards and repairs are costly. The fix will run up to $750. It does not have to be caused by an accident. We are on the second transmission and air conditioner failed catastrophically. Next time, I will go with regular doors and very unlikely a Honda. Right now, Ford and Toyota will be consider as replacements for the Honda. Doors are supposed to latch and stay latched. We carry children in the van and this is worthy of a recall. It happens to much on the Odyssey.

I still have the problem. For now I avoid using that door, or close it manually if I have to. Today I removed the sliding door panel but did not see anything obvious that is broken or loose. All the mechanical parts are hidden inside the door, so it is very difficult to see what is not working.

I have a 2001 Ody, driver side slider won't open. Can't open it manually either. The button's on the key fob and in the car don't seem to actuate anything. Fuses ok, and fuel door are fine. Other side works fine. It just stopped working one day. Any suggestions? FYI- I wouldn't buy another Odyssey ever, and I've owned Hondas for 20 yrs. This has been the WORST car.

My door is still not working. I listened to a mechanic's diagnose, bought a new door closer latch motor unit, replaced it myself and found out that it was not the problem. After all that, i found this link http://www.odyclub.com/forums/9- problems-concerns/15920-power-sliding-door-problem-fixed-print.html?perpage=15&pagenumber=2 . I could have tested the motor by applying 12 Volts to the door contacts. Important step is to reverse the 12V if the motor does not turn. The motor turns in opposite directions depending on the polarity and once it goes to one direction (eg. latched position) it will stop and will turn again only to the opposite direction. Now I have a door latch motor unit if anyone needs one. I made following observations. When the door closes, 12v should be present at the two door contacts which will drive the door close motor to latch the door. I am not getting that 12v, I suspect it is a sensor not detecting the door position so it does not trigger the 12v. I have stopped waiting for warmer weather, may start working on this again soon. I will post more info when I make progress.

I have a 2005 Odyssey EXL w 110,000 miles that the passenger side slider door was closing and then pulling in more than flush and holding for about five seconds and then releasing. When this would occur the indicator light on the dash would indicate that the door was closed but the door warning alarm would sound continuously when the car was in drive or reverse. It would silence when in park or neutral and you could silence by turning the master switch off. As earlier stated in this thread, I turned the on/off switch by the steering wheel to the off position. I opened the door all the way open. I took a round screwdriver and rotated the switch in the back of the door simulating the door closing onto the retaining loop in the door jam. I pulled the handle as if I were opening the door and the door lock mechanism release. I found that the rotating action of the lock had some dirt and grime build up. I sprayed with lubricate and cleaned. The door seems to be working properly now. I have found that when the door is working properly it will not pull in more than flush and then release. Whenever the door pulls in past flush then releases back out it always sound the alarm. When the door is working properly it will stop at flush and the latch will retain the door. This was a very frustrating issue and without the help of this forum I would have completely disassembled my van chasing this problem probably with no results. Thanks for all the people that posted. Murray

Hello lol88 , On your previous update of yours ( 12v not supplied to door sensor ) did you get the issue diagnosed / fixed. How much did it cost. I have a similar problem. Would like to get some help on this.. Thanks

Sadly I gotten to the broken door. May work on it again next spring.

I read all the above helpful information because it seemed like overnight our side doors stopped working. My husband took it to a mechanic who had serviced the transmission. He pried the doors open slightly to expose the "contacts" where the door latches into upon closing. He then took a pencil eraser and cleaned the contacts which only took a few seconds. The doors are working great and he didn't charge us.

My driver side door would close but not latch and then the alarm would sound. I took a small piece of sandpaper and roughed up the contacts that are on the door and the frame just behind the front seat. It works like normal now.

2007 Odyssey 160,000 miles all of a sudden the passenger side sliding door alarm would go off when in drive or reverse. Turned off the door and started looking on the internet for the answer. Tried the reset with the fuse - no luck. Looked for "contacts" on the door but couldn't find any to clean. I was looking for electrical contacts. My wife took the van to the dealer and they carefully and thoughtfully diagnosed a bad door motor, plus needs roller replacements. It just didn't sound like a motor problem when the door opens and closes completely and fully. Kept looking on the internet. Came across pcv6400's answer 3 years ago and found with close observation that the door was over closed just like his post. I cleaned and lubricated the door rollers/track and open and closed the door latch and cleaned and lubricated it. It didn't look that dirty but the paper towels were filthy when I was done. Turned the door switch back on on the dash, closed the door (didn't over close this time), started it up, put in reverse. No alarm! Just the dirt from the latch makes the door motor pull harder to get the latch to close fully. Seems the motor releases a bit and the latch doesn't fully engage and the alarm goes off. So, moral is, dealerships don't always know what's going on and if it seems like the answer doesn't make sense, investigate further. Kudos to PVC and +1 on all the help/explanations/videos from everyone. Just saved $1000 (dealer quote).

Hi lol88, I have a 2004 Ody with the same problem. Check fuse 1 in the passenger fusebox (20A).

WD40 or grease on the back rocker latch will fix this every time. Open the door all the way and spray the back rocker latch on the door itself and wiggle it a few times
