2001 ford ranger

I had to put it in 4x4 when I went to put it back into
2wd it wouldn't it stayed in 4x4 what do I do to fix
that

If it's in 4wd low put in neutral then shift it into 2wd.

Make sure your shift solenoid isn't faulty, could be a dirty wiring harness, or maybe solenoid got wet and shorted out, or check connection at switch, or if it still has shift lever, check shift lever rod to transfer case
