2002 HONDA CIVIC 1.7 L THERMOSTAT AND HOSES ; FANS WORK ONLY WHEN AC IS TURNED ON .

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
my 2002 Honda Civic 1.7L is having issues with the cooling system , I think . The
fans won't turn on unless the AC is turned on and the hose that is connected to
my Thermostat gets really HOT BUT THE HOSE UNDERNEATH THE
THERMOSTAT stays cool . What does that mean ? The temperature gauge
duoesn't rise up to say it's overheating it
just stays in the middle . What do I do? Is there something wrong??

If the temperature gauge is in the middle then nothing is wrong. Are you losing coolant? The fans only come on when the coolant gets hot enough, they don't run when not needed.

Its about time for a radiator flush, and a thermostat change and a check both fans, one fan is for when the a/c is on (Auxiliary) and the other fan is for when the coolant reaches a certain temp (primary). If the primary is not working disconnect it and test with a jumper wires, if it works then test the relay, I will add a URL to copy & paste to show how to test relay. There is a sensor to turn on the fan and some test you can do.

I got the the same car and I noticed that when I got it , hit the A/C and the fans go on ,any time you turn on heat fan that A/C light goes on , temp. gauge sits just below half , have put many miles on it with no problems .Haven't driven it in summer yet though .
If the heater is not working consistent,, that means your water pump is cavatateing,, getting air in the system,,, then what happens is you get air pocket around the switch sensor witch will can cause the fan not to come on,, you wanna know why,,, wait for it,,, ok i will tell you why,, bad engine design, deck gets warped to easy,, the fans dont come on until 204 " and if you getting compression in the cooling system they might not come on at all,, i surfaced the deck by hand, it took hrs to get it right, look at the deck picture theres no support around the cylinders,, machine shop said the head wasn't warped that bad at all,, 3 thou on each out they say you will have problems,,
