2002 Honda Civic cranks but will not start.
I have been fighting this issue for a long time. I will try to explain what is
going on. My son has a 2002 Honda Civic EX. When trying to start the car,
the motor cranks great with a lot of turnover power but the car will not start.
It is like the car is out of gas. I have changed the fuel pump, purge valve,
Vent valve, crank sensor, cam sensor, battery and connections, alternator,
Spark plugs, fuel cap, Fuel pump relay, and took the car to the dealer
where they did a valve job for $300. I have hooked a pressure gauge to the
gas line going into the fuel rail. The pressure is 45 psi when cranking. The
car will start sometimes like there is nothing wrong. When the car starts it
idles good. Sometimes when driving the car, it has a small miss in it. When
the car starts it runs and drives fine except for the small miss at times. Most
of the time it cranks but will not start. I have noticed that the problem
seems to be worse with the cold weather. I was thinking about replacing
the computer. The way I understand it, is that if I buy a used computer I
have to take it to the dealer to get them to program it. I have run out of
idea's on what to do next. When the car is running I get over 14 vdc on the
battery. I have removed one of the spark plugs after I tried to start and the
plug seems to be dry. Across the injectors I have 11.2 ohms. I hooked up a
led across the injector wires and the led pulses slow when trying to start
and pulses fast when the car finally starts. I checked the voltage to ground
to one of the wires going to the injectors and got 12 vdc as the engine was
trying to start. It took several attempts to get the car to finally start. The 12
vdc remained even as the car started. I shut off the car again and after
several attempts to start the car, I removed a spark plug and it was dry. I
even tried to start the car without the plug and when the car started I did
not notice a lot of fuel coming out of the plug hole. What should my next
step be? Thanks Everybody I have spoken with tells me that I have

It sounds to me like you have a problem with the crankshaft or camshaft sensor, or the wirring circuits to these sensors.Have you tried pulling a plug and check the ignition coil to see if you have spark whenever the car fails to start?
Forgot to add that when a crankshaft sensor fails the PCM will automatically keep the injectors from injecting fuel on some cars. The fuel pump will sometimes still work and the pressure is good and all but the injectors will not work unless the PCM is recieving a signal from the crank sensor.
I have already changed the crank and the cam sensor. I have also confirmed that I am getting spark. I have not check the wiring to the sensors. Not sure how to do this. Thanks
Could the PCM be bad?
I would bet that the timing teeth is 1 tooth skipped. Open Valve cover and line up the Crank shaft harmonic balancer to see if tooth is off.
In my case the timing was off by 14 degrees, I opened the timing cover and found that the tensioner spring eyelet was broken and that is the reason why the timing was off.
see pic below. The tensioner also acts as a a damper and it was not performing it function.
My. daughter figured out her problem - so simple. Three days ago, her 2002 civic would crank but not start. Took it to the garage and it started right away. They could not find a problem. It happened again today. She has two keys and she realized that one key would start the car perfectly and the other one would not. Problem solved. It was the key.
I have the same problem on my 02 civic. Did you ever find the fix?
To be honest sound like you trip the immobolizer have to get reprogramed had the same issue i spent 500 dollars on a special diagnostic scanner tool did it myself start rite up and i reprogrammed it
This is not an answer, but I need to post it here due I got this same issue on Civic 2003 LX coupe 1.7lts. Check pump, injectors, cam and all OK, got some concerns on crank. Buy a new denso (same OEM) still crank wont start. Start to think maybe the main relay(s) are damage (or going to be). For some reason I disconnect the Crank sensor cable, and the car start. Keep do the same; crank it with crank cable on (do not start), crank it with the cable off (and it start.). A friend says it is impossible, any Idea? It may be computer?
