Is it the CVT or something else

Asked by GuruD474N4 Jul 31, 2023 at 06:00 PM about the 2002 Honda Civic GX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2002 CNG Civic <100k miles. Everything else runs great. Started occasionally going into safety mode where transmission wouldn't run when going on longer drives or long steep hills a few years back. Now it has a hard time accelerating, and it can't go up inclines hardly at all. I just want to know if it's the transmission or something else.

toothed belt...was surprised this many moving parts apparatus is chosen, need purity on this assembly~ gets compromised easily~ to change CVT oil there are lhree openings~ (mini does) would have the CVT oil changed filters inspected and tidied up a bit~ it's this drag of impure media what causes the trouble....at it's best is like stepping on a damp sponge~

I swapped out the Transmission fluid, and maybe it improved a little? I may have been imagining that. I didn't change the filter though. I guess I could do a flush, but I'm generally skeptical of those.

Sounds like the transmission is shot. Yes even Hondas will go bad.
