2001 Accord 4 cyl Engine shaking and loss of power

Asked by Jlg3256 Sep 30, 2016 at 02:30 PM about the 2001 Honda Accord DX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is backfiring, engine is shaking and it
loses power, especially on hills. To accelerate
especially in lower gears i have to press lightly
on gas pedal - if i step on it car will immediately
bog down. Sometimes when i am accelerating
it feels like its not getting enough fuel and then
may suddenly feel like its running normally.
Codes are for random misfire.  I can also smell
gas when it is running poorly. It has new spark
plugs. I really dont want to just throw parts in.
Im really hoping someone can point me in the
right direction!

Other than looking at the spark plug wire real good for arcing it does sound like a crank position sensor but his can be tested before replacing.
