Do I need a gasket for my distributor

No, there should be a grove with an o-ring the seal the distributor. Not the same as a gasket, if its leaking check the o-ring seal.

Gasket, o-ring are not the same thing, but serve the same purpose. Just ask at the parts store for what goes under the distributor mounting surface. I am sure Auto Centric is right with the o-ring.
