Air Conditioner inoperative after battery change

Asked by BHT Sep 01, 2013 at 01:18 AM about the 2001 Ford Taurus SEL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

AC only blows hot air, compressor working, after battery change. Followed instructions in manual for resetting idle and fuel trim. Did it 2x, but still no AC.

Fuel trim and Idle will not keep your AC from working. Is it not getting cold? Not blowing? Blowing out of the wrong registers? Blowing hot air? The battery change is coincidental.

Thanks for your suggestions. Here’s what I did to resolve the problem: 1. Disconnected battery – negative first, positive second. Waited 45 minutes. 2. Reconnected battery – positive first, negative second. 3. Put parking brake on. Idled engine for 1 minute. 4. Started AC. Idled for 1 minute. 5. With brake on, idled engine for 1 minute each with Trans in: Reverse, Drive, OD, 1st. 6. Drove for 10 miles. The AC actually worked when I started it in Step 4; I went through the other steps to ensure that the System reset completely.

Same problem happened to my 2003 Mercury Sable (same as Ford Taurus). I tried that process only until step 5 and it still didn't work. Before driving the 10miles I thought about CYCLING ALL AC AND HEAT MODES, IT WORKED after cycling from all hot temperature and back to Full cold, I believe the Blend door went to an incorrect position after reinstalling my battery. I cycled to full vent, full floor, etc until I went though all modes of hot and cold and my AC works fine now.

omg I hope this works going out now to do these steps...wish me luck. Had a mechanic tell me I had to take my dash all apart and he would charge me more than my car was worth...I love my car...

Followed BHT instructions on Ford Fusion 2008. The problem was i disconnected my battery and then trued switching to another battery. The second battery didn’t work for my car so i put the original battery back in. When i put the originial back in the A/C wasnt working at all. Before the A/C was fine. I disconnected the battery for 45 minutes and disconnected the AC clutch relay for 3 minutes after connecting battery. I turned on the car, Didnt start the engine. Then i checked the A/C, which started right up. Must have been a computer reprogram issue, Fixed Now. Thanks sm!
