Honda Civic Heater Issue

Asked by Alop23 Feb 16, 2015 at 12:15 PM about the 2001 Honda Civic EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Honda Civic that was overheating. I fixed the issue by changing out
numerous parts and tightening some hoses. Now my car doesn't overheat, instead
once it reaches normal operating levels (Temp gauge in middle) and I start to drive it,
temp gauge starts to drop back down to "C" or cold. Any ideas why this is happening? I
changed thermostat, cooling fan switch, cooling fan relay, radiator cap, top and bottom
radiator hose and put a clamp on the reservoir hose too.

Is the check engine light on. Sounds like you might have a bad temp sensor at the thermostat housing. That sensor is what controls the guage.

The light is on. But that light has been on since before the car started overheating. Either way, how can I check that part for sure?

you can use an voltmeter to check the resistance. If it has 0.2- 0.5 ohms then the resistance is ok. if it has infinite resistance then the sensor is bad. I would still get your check engine light checked it might have a good pertaining to that sensor. If you wanted to I would disconnect the battery to reset the check engine light that way any old codes that were stored will be cleared out and new ones will set. That way you have a fresh set of codes to go by. if you do have a code for the temperature sensor replace it.

Sorry, I haven't been able to check my car with all this crazy weather out here. When the weather breaks I'll investigate some more.

I haven't looked in to it yet but the other day i went to turn on the car and i noticed it wasn't the ''Check Engine" light that was on but the "Maint Reqd" That shouldn't have any thing to do with whats going on with my car right?
