Automatic transmission shifts without key in ignition or brake on

Asked by Todd Mar 16, 2017 at 01:24 PM about the 2001 Honda Passport 4 Dr EX SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my 2 year old got in my 2001 Honda passport
and was able to pull the shift lever into neutral
without pushing release button, or key in ignition or
foot on brake. I know it didn't used to be able to do
that. But just had transmission rebuilt.  What if
anything was not installed correctly

The shift interlock cable that is either disconnected or broken. I would take it back and have it looked at. For now make sure you use the parking brake until it is repaired.
