Loud Tractor Sound 2002 Suburban

The other day my Suburban swerved by
itself to another lane, made some
consistent knocking sound, and finally at a
light it made a loud tractor sound.  I can no
longer put it in drive without the very loud
noice and no movement. I am only able to
back the car up in reverse. I have been told
it's the whole rear differential assembly that
needs to be replaced. Can you offer and
help?

Take it to a mechanic and let them diagnose the problem and fix it. Otherwise buy a shop manual and start troubleshooting the transfer case, trans, and differential. I mean knowing what the problem is isn't going to make it any cheaper when you take it to a mechanic or dealership, they generally don't care what your opinion is of the problem.
