Can you hear it prime when you first turn the switch on without turning the starter on, just turn the key far enough to turn the dash lights on but do not turn over the engine, you should hear it in the gas tank.

Primes fast only takes a few seconds and will stop. otherwise you will need to do a pressure test, which you can rent at a parts store.
