How difficult is it to locate engine for an 89 Dodge Raider

Asked by Johanna Nov 20, 2017 at 02:52 PM about the 1989 Dodge Raider 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I love my Raider but it has been sitting for a few years waiting to get a new
engine.  Couldn't pass smog in CA because of white smoke.  The repairman
said that parts are hard to find and to junk it.  I love my Raider!  Will I be
throwing good money after bad?

your engine can be located under the hood towards the front of the automobile. take your automobile to your local shop and get a qualified technician to diagnose your malfunctioning hood

The engines are hard to find and if you find one it's probably bad also. They have a problem whereby most of them lost oil pressure and it ruined the heads and or the block. The cylinder heads were bad because they put an air injection valve next to the regular valves and it caused the heads to crack, so you need to buy a rebuilt cylinder head and a rebuilt engine block or what they call a short block. It's called a long block if you get both the head and block together. The blocks usually get messed up because it loses oil pressure and scratches to cylinders very badly. They had a problem with the balance shafts on the engine block and most re-builders take the balance shaft out altogether when they rebuild it. And now when you replace the cylinder heads you get ones that are stronger and don't have the air injection valves. So basically they all end up like yours sooner or later because a rebuilt engine costs around $2,000 plus the labor for someone to install it. Your vehicle not running would typically sell for around $500. Here's the link for a motor on Ebay. It's a G54B 2.6L https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mitsubishi-83-89- MONTERO-2-6L-G54B-SOHC-8V-Rebuilt-Engine-Long-Block- MILBG54BR/172200151363? fits=Year%3A1989%7CModel%3AMontero&hash=item2817edc943:g:CtkAAOSw3mpXMQ PN&vxp=mtr

I wish you were closer as I would buy yours from you. I'm in Texas and all the ones I see for sale are almost always on the East or West Coast or way up North. You almost never see Montero for sale in Texas unless it is fully rebuilt and selling for $3,000 to $6,000 as a restored vehicle. Basically you can't find them in the south hardly and if you do they are mostly restored already and cost a lot. People turn them into hunting vehicles here in the south and they are highly sought after with few ever coming up for sale. It's almost always cheaper to buy some other 4x4 than it is to buy and restore or fix up a Montero or Raider. Finding a good used motor is almost impossible and even if one is running, unless they got a rebuilt motor then the motor in the vehicle is almost certain to be near the end of it's life. They all had cylinder head issues and block issues from the counter balance shafts and they had nylon timing tensioner guides that would wear down and then the timing chain would get loose and this timing chain turned the oil pump and so when the timing chain got loose it almost always caused oil failure and ruined the block. The cylinder heads were prone to cracking if the motor overheated due to the air injection valve ports on the cylinder heads. Overall the 6 cylinders were much better and lasted much longer. The 4 cylinder engines were prone to failure around 100,000. If you had a good mechanic working on it regularly then you see some with around 150,000 on them before the engine is shot. Around Texas if you buy a used one to fix it up you are going to sink some money into it and good luck finding any used ones for parts. There are not many left for salvaging parts from.
