I had to slam on my brakes on the freeway--white smoke came off the brakes. Now the car shakes when I go faster than 65. It's a manual tranmission. Do I need to go to a mechanic?

Yes, have it inspected The front end.. the brakes can handle a heavy stop and even smoke there... Ok, possibly but unlikely you did damage to the tires. Most likely is the panic stop located and loosened (even more) the front end components that were in need of replacement.. a tire balance issue, but a front shimmy or shake in the steering
