I have a 2001 Ford Windstar with 160,000 miles. The car starts to sputter on acceleration or while going up a hill. What could be the problem?

Had the same problem with my 2003 which progressively got worse. Replaced wires, coil pack, and crank sensor to no avail. Finally my mechanic found out that my aftermarket alternator (3 years old) was causing the problem. Replaced alternator with OEM and the van runs great.
