Random Power Failures

Asked by StephRay Nov 05, 2014 at 07:13 PM about the 1998 Honda Accord EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 Accord EX.  I have a few random dash board indicator lights that have
recently stopped working (brights, left turn, seat belt, low gas, etc.).  The systems
they relate to work, just not the indicator lights.  Also, my thermometer only works part
of the time.  If it is not working, I can pound on the top of the dash and it will come
back for a while.  Occassionally when I first start my car, I can't get it to shift out of
Park because it seems the car doesn't realize that I am pushing on the brakes (none
of the exterior brake lights come on when this is happening).  Then, for no reason, it
registers the brakes and everything is fine.  Finally, sometimes when I'm driving, I lose
all power to the radio and the dashboard indicators - all lights turn off, all dials drop to
nothing, radio stops.  This happens for a second or two, and then it all comes back.
The car doesn't turn off or slow down, just dash controls.  Any ideas?  I did take it to a
shop and they tried to clean all the connectors and replace some bulbs.  It helped with
some lights, but then others (the ones I mentioned above) stopped working.

Sounds like you have some really bad wiring issues. Check the fuse box for loose wires or corrosion
