where is the fuel pump in a 1985 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon

If memory serves '85 DL/GL 1.8L were the first to have pumps in their gas tanks.

I read a post saying the 84 wasn't in the tank, so hoping for simple resolution to the fact that there's no gas in the fuel filter. The car has been sitting for several years. During the tune-up process, we did have it running, but suspect junk in the tank responsible for it dying going up its first hill.

80-84 are different from 85-89 (inc 90-92 Loyale). You've typed both 85 and 84. If you did have it running start by draining the tank, filling with premium and bottle of cleaner, change fuel filter and see what happens. I suspect you may be donating this dinosaur to charity....

it's an 85 - and it's been mine since it was new. We've changed fuel filters a couple times and this 2nd filter is dry. It starts with gas poured into the carb. but quits when that runs out. We're going to make sure all fuses are active. Maybe ultimately get a new fuel tank, etc. My husband says he knows the technology (carb. and no computers), so he's still hopeful. Could be chewed wires too, as mice moved in several places over time. We've already changed plug wires, coil, dist., plugs, filters, then this problem cropped up.

Vacuum lines are always something to check in the 1980s cars. Subaru loved using vacuum lines and all it takes is a couple of cracks somewhere in those lines to drop the vacuum levels and cause the car to not start.
