Car does not start.. NO POWER!!! Battery is GOOD~!!!!!

Asked by HTSCHAO Mar 12, 2017 at 12:31 AM about the 1996 Honda Civic LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello. Car was driving fine last week until today. Recently got into the car
and tried to start and no power when key is turned to "ON" position. And I
mean NO power...... no emergency lights, no headlights, no brake lights,
no dome lights.... I know FORSURE that it is not the battery because I
switched the current battery from my 1996 Honda Civic LX 4 dr into my
other car and other car starts perfectly fine and vice versa, except my 1996
honda civic acted the same with the used new battery from my other car
(no start). Headlights and brake lights do not work. Instrument icons/lights
do not work when turned to "ON" position.. Radio and Dome lights
HOWEVER will work during ignition first turn/click position but will shut off
when turned to second turn/click "on" position.. Emergency lights do not
work in general, when button pressed only the relay is clicking from fuse
box.. PLEASE HELP!!!! BATTERY IS GOOD 100% as the battery from the
car works in my other car and other car battery does not work in current
1996 honda civic as recently stated... PLEASE HELP!!!! I am thinking its the
alternator........... hopefully. I've been researching and have not found
anything on this weird situation...THANK YOU!!!!!!

Loss of power is usually a bad battery but since your battery starts and runs another vehicle it's more likely a battery cable, short or. Blown fuse. Over the years with several vehicles I've had a corroded battery cable, and another time had a main power cable get loose from it's retention loom and fall against the manifold burning through the insulation shorting out the main fuseable link both of which had symptoms as you described. You will need a continuity tester and patience to find the circuit interruption. I got lucky on the battery cable. The main link problem happened ony way home from work so I had the car towed to a dealership to find and fix the problem.

Maybe the ignition switch, also there is a little black box under dash near steering column that can do this too. I forget the name of it but had to replace one 20 years ago on a Honda similar to yours, its about 3"x2"x1 1/2". If you know about ATV's & Motorcycles it looks like a CDI Brain box. Bad grounds engine to frame too.

I did not open the black box to see if re-flowing the solder joints would work but did check with voltmeter to confirm power in none out and replaced, even back then it cost about $45 for the part so re-flowing the solder joints may be an option.

Look up some test to do to locate your parasitic battery drain issue. Depending on year, make, & model there are several different procedures to use that are very helpful (note some test should not be performed on all models to avoid damage to computer or other components)

I have a 2016 Honda Civic I pumped gas and tried to to turn on and my dash lights and emergency lights turned on but now completely blacked out and it won’t start. My friend helped me out with cables but now unsure if to buy a battery or take it to Honda dealership. What was your outcome

This seems to be a problem. My 2016 Honda Civic keeps cutting off on me also. After seeing all of these comments, there needs to be a recall.

This thread has older cars with keys and newer cars with push button ignition. On cars with pushbutton starters the computer controls the starting circuit. The computer is woken up when you unlock the doors. Normally the computer stays on long enough for you to get in, get comfortable, and then push the brake and the start button. Sometimes it times out early and shuts itself off before you have time to start it. If that happens then locking and unlocking the doors wakes the computer up again and you can start the car. It is tricky to figure out the cause. Since the battery is good, the main suspects are the computer or a wiring problem such as a bad connection due to corrosion or looseness. A computer reset to restore the default shut off time should solve the problem if computer related; if not, carefully inspect the wiring at the battery, computer, relays, brake switch, and all door switches.

We find everyone now and then (often but not every time) when we turn the key there is no response from the car (no lights engine, etc.). I will try turning the key from off to on (not rapidly) about 2-3 times before it will turn on.

The 2016 civic has a small battery (low capacity); I’ve had trouble with the battery on my LX sedan from square one. So much electricity is drawn when parked that within 3 weeks battery is dead. Was told a larger capacity would cut the gas economy (?!). Settled for a trickle charger. Now the alarm is drawing so much current it kills the battery. Car was parked in carport and we noticed flashers were on. Only 1 hr after driving it. Had to unlock manually. Couldn’t pop trunk. Wouldn’t start. Attaching jumper, the horn went off immediately that’s when I realized alarm system is involved. Such an annoying car.

my 2017 manual transmission civic has been giving me on and off starting problems for about 6 weeks now. replaced the battery, they thought maybe a bad cell. nope. problem continued. on and off. turn the key....nothing. sometimes a ticking. lights all come on. this past wknd, very very slow to start. this morning: nothing. it's on the tow truck headed to the repair shop. the local honda dealers service centers have bad reputations, so taking it to local shop. i will admit....there's a little comfort in knowing i'm not alone.

mine had been totally dead on three occasions and we had to jump start it. I mean TOTALLY DEAD, no lights at all, cannot even open the trunk to get at the jumper cables! I also have an intermittent issue with the remote which has a new batter in it. This is a 2016 Honda Civic Touring with about 45k miles. We took it to auto zone and the battery and all charging of the battery tested fine, even above standard. It is something else and I think it's a stupid computer issue. The more gadgets the more that can go wrong!!

Has happened to me three times 2016 Civic. After the 2nd time in 2018 they gave me a battery. Just happened a 3rd time 2 weeks ago and was told the battery was dead. Can't be possible.

Jimbo50 are you only driving short distances? It may not be recharging sufficiently. Also, IMO too many “alwayson” electronics for the small battery. So once you get it running again, make a habit of turning everything off before you turn off the engine each drive. Everything: radio, wipers, heater/A/C. That’s worked for me. Otherwise invest in a trickle charger if you park with access to sunlight. It’s a pain, but it helps.

I've got a Civic 2019 and some months ago it wouldn't start. Same problem, totally dead, not even the doors could be locked. It was magically solved in a couple of minutes... Didn't have issues until yesterday, my insurance came to jump start it and it worked instantly... Took the battery to be checked and it was good. It's something else. ☹️

My problem was the 80 ohm fuse under the hood (#19) was blown. Got one at O'Reillys for $4 and worked like new.

My 2017 civic is doing the same thing. Jumper cables didn't even get a response out of it. I unplugged the red terminal on the battery and plugged it back in a couple minutes later and got power. It happened again so I checked the main fuse. It started again once I put the fuse back. The 3rd time I replaced the battery and it was fixed for all of a month. I'd say, given this behavior, that there's a computer that gets reset when I unplug the battery. Why is the most reliable car in my family the 98 Subaru? I'm ready to give up on anything built after 2000.

I have a 2015 Honda Civic and this happened to my yesterday afternoon, I tried to start my car and nothing! I could not honk, turn the hazard lights, nothing! I thought maybe it was a main fuse issue so I went to the Honda dealership to get a replacement. I spoke to the Honda parts rep and he made me aware that a lot of people are purchasing fuse replacements. I went home switched the fuses and nothing, I also tried doing the jumper cables scenario and nothing, my battery terminals are corroded so imma switch them, I hope it works and I hope that's the real issue.

I am having similar issue with 2013 honda ex-l, no lights no power suddenly, but after some time, depending on day 5 mins to 45 mins couple of unlock/lock things start working again. Mystery bug in Honda seems like. why it is no power suddenly and then works fine after sometime.. Mystery Bug of Honda It always then asks for security code and my clock time is back to 1:00 a.m. default
