What would cause smoke to be coming from
behind the wheel? When I looked under the hood
no smoke, it was coming from the driver side
wheel. Plz, help me understand what might be the
problem.

It might be a brake caliper hanging up making the brakes drag and get hot. Any mechanic will recognize the burnt brake smell. Get it fixed before it locks up tight, warps rotors, burns pads, seals and wheel bearings.
