If you thinking budget, there are cheap ones out there that use a 9 volt battery that plugs into a power port, but the good ones plug into the OBD 2 port. The one I have uses a motorcycle battery and will last a long time if you have to do major repairs. The longest I’ve had it hooked up for has been two weeks, waiting for parts.

Yes, on any newer vehicle it's best to use one when disconnecting the battery. Even if you don't need it it won't hurt. This is one of those things where it's better to be safe than sorry! Hope that helps! Jim
